My ex gave me an opal ring before we got married (notice he's now the ex), a gorgeous, delicate design that I loved. Not only did I blame the opal ring for the break-up (I should have thanked it) but I gave the ring away, fearing that wearing it would bring more bad luck.

However, I always treat Friday the 13th as a lucky day especially if it falls in August.

My grandmother was very superstitious. Our family won't put shoes on a table (an argument), hats on a bed (leaves angry spirits behind), or purses on the floor (money drains out.)

Thank you for freeing me of my opal distrust!Rochelle Staabhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08700362801884548978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015064410387223894.post-51529943048690279822011-07-28T14:39:38.704-04:002011-07-28T14:39:38.704-04:00Thanks for the comments! I also went to Pompeii and Herculanium, where like Hawaii, it is believed to bring bad luck to take a piece of lava. It will bring down the wrath of the gods! One of the reasons behind the cat superstitions is that cats were thought to be guardians of the underworld--look at Greek and Egyptian mythology.melissa_jarvishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04908540378697170496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015064410387223894.post-13426884339674155092011-07-28T13:41:05.947-04:002011-07-28T13:41:05.947-04:00I love opals. This was bad luck for the necklace--she broke it.

I'm superstitious about talking about my writing until it's past the early stage because I feel like talking about it can bog things down.Marie Deeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02227521965829153174noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015064410387223894.post-3497101232113382042011-07-28T13:13:42.605-04:002011-07-28T13:13:42.605-04:00Really enjoyed your post. I don't consider myself particularly superstitious, but I do the "knock on wood" thing off and on.

Love the ancient stuff. I spent over a week in Cairo and visited the pyramids and Luxor. Also saw the underground Roman ruins on Isle de la Citie in Paris. And have visited the Roman ruins of Carthage in Tunis a couple of times. It helps that I have a son who loves that part of the world ;-)
Judi
judiphillips@roadrunner.comJudihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17681064106856943110noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015064410387223894.post-27025234219165218102011-07-28T12:20:34.107-04:002011-07-28T12:20:34.107-04:00Very interesting post! I could even wear it to go to a party on Friday the 13th!
Thanks for the post and the giveaway! Roman history is one of my passions, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Kanya
kanyachhetATyahooDOTcaKanyahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13887739558825592540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015064410387223894.post-36425542081115636152011-07-28T12:01:24.569-04:002011-07-28T12:01:24.569-04:00Excellent post, Melissa! Ones that I respect... opening an umbrella indoors, walking under a ladder, black cat crossing your path (for me this one is a sign of imminent change), white cat crossing your path (another sign of change or good luck), see a penny heads up-good luck all day, see a penny heads down--flip it over and leave it for someone else to pick up. LOL, and that's only a few of the crazy ones I've adopted over the years.

Oh and I have to say, I nevr heard the history behind the Romans and the mirrors--so thanks for opening my eyes to something new!
~EK (elijanakindel (at) gmail (dot) comeElijana Kindelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08317974212097382986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2015064410387223894.post-47961950998636889442011-07-28T11:51:25.073-04:002011-07-28T11:51:25.073-04:00Opals are my birthstone, so I know about that one....Opals are my birthstone, so I know about that one. As a college athlete, I used to religiously carry a stick of gum in my sock. I'm so old now, I can't remember why!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
