Mini Video Festival - Pop Music Videos Referencing Ancient Egypt

Since I write a paranormal romance series under the banner "Gods of Egypt" and I usually post something to do with either the books or the lore of ancient Egypt, I thought it might be fun today to feature a few song videos that use ancient Egyptian-like backgrounds - please enjoy!

This one reminds me of my newest novel, MAGIC OF THE NILE...

My DANCER OF THE NILE would appreciate some of the intricate dancing in this classic:

And this oldie but goodie is just for fun:

Chaos and Creativity

Life is a little crazy in the Aires' house. We are dejunking, painting, replacing carpet, yada yada, getting the house ready to put up for sale. Twin A takes off a week after her sophomore year of college ends for Maine, where she is interning  at a summer stock theater. Twin B will have the teal twin-car all to herself and is working as a vet tech before taking off for college again in August. And sometime during all that we are hoping to sell the homestead and head south.

So what better time to get a great idea for a new series? Well, I have to sit down sometime! I always have good ideas when I am cleaning. I think because cleaning is making order out of chaos. Which is like writing a story.

I've been doing character sketches, plotting, gathering pictures. Thinking, brewing.

I once taught school in a tiny ranching community in eastern Montana. It was remote, and I was on the highway! There were ranches and small schools way out there, off the paved roads. People there still had soddys--maybe just for a fishing cabin, but they had them!

What if some magical types homesteaded out there, back in the Wild West days? It's a good place to hide, with the bad lands and gullys, rock outcrops and small stands of trees. Not to mention the dirt roads have bentonite in the soil, which means the mud cakes on your shoes, or on your car tires, until you loose the shoe or the car quits rolling. Schools there have mud days, not snow days. Lots of privacy to work your magic, or run around as a shifter. Freedom to raise your little witches in peace.

So that is the starting point, an intriguing 'What if?'

Guest Author Angela Campbell Talks Psychic Cats ON THE SCENT

VS sez: Lovely to have you with us today and take it away!!!

Angela:
First of all, thank you Paranormal Romantics for hosting me today! I’m familiar with quite a few of the authors in this group, and I’m honored to be here because they’re all fabulous and an incredibly talented bunch.

I asked Veronica Scott if I could stop by to talk about my upcoming release, but as things tend to happen, I don’t yet have a release date, or cover, or any news at all yet to share about it, so I’ll use the opportunity to backtrack and talk about another topic near and dear to my heart.

Cats.

As I type this, in fact, my favorite cat on the planet is lying near my feet at the end of the bed staring fixated on something up on the wall. Something I cannot see. Something I suspect could be either a bug or a ghost. Personally, I hope it’s a ghost. I HATE bugs. I can handle ghosts. Er, I think.

Actually, I like ghost stories, too, which is probably why I combined cats and ghosts for my Psychic Detectives series from Harper Impulse. I even got a little crazy with it and wrote a cat who can talk — okay, not really, but the hero of  ON THE SCENT, the first book in the series, is psychic and can hear the heroine’s cat thinking, and boy, is that feline snarky. I like to think my own cat is snarky, simply because it’s amusing to imagine what some of her looks mean.  For example, she’s now looking at me right with one side of her lip curled up. She’s probably thinking, “Oh. My. Gosh. You’re not writing about me again, are you? Weirdo.”

What about you? Do you ever wonder what your pets are thinking and make up their mental dialogue? Please say yes, because the alternative probably means I’m crazy. And let me know what you think your pet thinks of you in the comments below!

The story:
Hannah Dawson has a big problem: she’s just become the unexpected owner of a snarky cat, a loveable but not-so-bright dog… and their $10 million fortune!

Which would be awesome if it hadn’t made her the target of every wacko in the metro Atlanta area. Now Hannah and her famous pets need protecting and there’s only one man who can help them…

Enter Zachary Collins: ex-TV star of ‘The Psychic Detective’ and street-wise private investigator – all 6 foot blue-eyed gorgeousness!

Only Zach’s got secrets of his own – not least that he finds his new client irresistibly hot. The more time he spends keeping Hannah out of harm’s way, the more he’s tempted to give in to the attraction… even if it means breaking all his own rules.

On the FLY CONTEST!

I WANT TO GIVE AWAY A BOOK from the
Immortal Redeemer Series!

I know, late post! The group was nice in giving me the day to tout my new release, which I think is tomorrow. I had dates mixed up...anyway - I still want to give away a book.

They're hawk shifters, comment below by MIDNIGHT and tell me what your favorite shifter is and your name will be thrown into the hat for the book (PDF format) of your choice.

One lucky winner will receive the full 3 book series!

UNHINGED is the last book in the series and here's a blurb:
Not even love could tame the deadly creature inside him.

Nightshade Santone discovered The Covenant right under his nose in the eastern part of the United States. Tales were told of its power, and Shade planned to make the book his. He didn’t count on a feisty veterinarian getting in his way. The sexy as hell human willingly took Shade to her bed, and damn if she wasn’t keeping him there! Now, more than ever, he needs to possess the book and its secrets.

Kelsea Arden’s battle to keep animals safe and alive became a passion. One of a handful of humans privy to the secrets of Immortal Redeemers, she finally hoped to make a difference, but the untimely arrival of Shade Santone, a powerful immortal seeking the Covenant, was about to test Kel’s loyalty. The Redeemer not only unbalanced her heart and her life, he gave Kelsea a new purpose -- capturing and keeping the raptor forever.

So get those comments coming.

Tales of the Egyptian Gods - Warrior of the Nile

VS sez: One from the Archives! I just released a new book set in Ancient Egypt, MAGIC OF THE NILE, and thought I'd revisit a previous book, which is a standalone story set in ancient times...(post revised a bit  to update!)

Here were snippets from three of the reviews at the time the book came out:

RT Book Reviews: "4 Stars...HOT...you're in for the most romantic desert story since Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra. Khenet and Tiya are realistically resigned to their joined fates and the distrust-turned-love will make hearts clench." October 2013

Night Owl Romance Reviews: Top Pick  5 Stars "...another awesome read by  the wonderful storyteller Veronica Scott."

KIRKUS REVIEWS: "...Scott's ancient Egyptian milieu should pique the interest of historical-romance readers looking for a story set outside the usual scenery..."

If you read my posts here regularly on the 13th of the month, you know how much I love all things having to do with life along the Nile, untold centuries ago.

(Yes, I did kinda get hung up on using "Nile" in my titles, I'll freely admit. Carina Press decided to add "Gods of Egypt" for some variety I think, LOL.)

Here's the story for Warrior:
Egypt, 1500 BCE
Lady Tiya is bound to the service of the goddess Nephthys, who plans to sacrifice Tiya’s body to protect Egypt from an ancient terror. She embarks to meet her grim fate alone but for the hardened warrior Khenet, who is fated to die at her side. Tiya’s dreams of love and family now seem impossible, and Khenet, who is the last of his line, knows his culture will die with him. Struggling with the high cost of Nephthys’s demands, both resolve to remain loyal.
Neither expects the passion that flowers when Tiya’s quiet courage and ethereal beauty meet Khenet’s firm strength and resolve. On a boat down the Nile, their two lonely souls find in each other a reason to live. But time is short and trust elusive.
Without the willing sacrifice of Tiya and Khenet, a great evil will return to Egypt. How could the gods demand their deaths when they’ve only just begun to live?
Here's a short excerpt from midway through Chapter One to tempt you a tiny bit. The scene takes place in the temple of the goddess Nephthys:
Khenet felt a breeze swirl around him emanating from the closed door. Glancing over his shoulder to look, he saw the pins holding the bolts on the door to the innermost sanctum slowly turning. As he watched, one fell to the floor with a crash, followed a moment later by the other. The door drifted open very slightly, light blazing through the narrow opening and at the sides.
“The goddess is present,” said the high priest, clutching his staff so hard his knuckles went white. “Everyone is dismissed and may leave the inner sanctum, except for Lady Tiya and Pharaoh’s representative.”
Tiya gave her relieved cousin a hasty kiss as the man who’d been holding her earlier rushed forward to remove the woman from the dais, carrying her out of the sanctum, followed by their family members. Tiya’s father came to brush a kiss on her cheek before rejoining his impatient young wife and her brother and they too left.  Khenet saw that while Tiya didn’t glance after them, she did hastily wipe away a tear.
Murmuring prayers of praise and thanksgiving, the other priests filed out of the room.
Going down the steps, he offered Tiya his help in leaving the dais. “Allow me.”
She rested her fingers on his hand just long enough to keep her balance before snatching her hand back, wrapping her sheer, fringed shawl more closely around her. Preceding him up the stairs to the door of the innermost sanctum, Tiya held herself tall and dignified.
He restrained a sigh. If she’s as haughty and rude as all her kind, this will be a long journey. But the other would have driven me to distraction with her interminable weeping, should Nephthys have selected her.
The high priest regarded them solemnly. “We go to meet the goddess. Nephthys wishes to assess both her Daughter and the guardian.”
“I’m ready,” Khenet said, fists clenched.
Tiya just nodded.
Checking to see that everyone else had left the chamber before walking to the partially open doors, the priest flung the gilded panels wide open. Light streamed out and Khenet heard the buzzing of wasps, as if he was about to step into a hive of the angry creatures. Tiya shrank back a little, took a deep breath and followed the priest.
Not knowing what he expected, never having been in the innermost sanctum of a temple before, other than once as a boy to swear allegiance to Horus, Khenet sized up the room in a quick glance as he crossed the threshold. The room was dominated by a ten foot tall statue of the goddess, with her arms out to the sides, palms up, her proud face carved as if she was staring directly at anyone foolish enough to enter her domain. The sculptor had depicted Nephthys wearing a tightly fitting, pleated sheath and the entire statue had been covered in gold, which gleamed in the unearthly light the goddess herself was providing. A gleaming collar of turquoise, coral and lapis lay across the statue’s chest, matching earrings affixed to the shell-like ears. The strong scent of the lotus threatened to choke him
“The goddess is present,” whispered the priest, going to his knees, arms crossed over his chest, head down.
Tiya muttered a little prayer and knelt, copying the man’s pose. Khenet planted his feet well apart, in a fighter’s stance and stood. I’m here in Pharaoh’s place and he wouldn’t kneel to any goddess. Besides, I swear no fealty to Nephthys.

Getting older... but maybe not wiser?

I've always wondered about the vampires or immortals who have seemingly endless lives. Sure, they have the horrible problem of watching their loved ones age and die but they get to live such wonderful history!

Imagine being there when the Pyramids were built. Or when the Wright brothers got off the ground. Or when  (war of your choice) was fought.

Once you remove the fear of death it'd be rather exciting, I think, to be there for such great events... but what if you don't really learn from your experience?

One thing that's bothered me about current vampires in film and on television is their lack of funds. It's as if they never thought much about having to keep paying for the house, electricity, whatever. But they never go out and rob a bank...

As well they never go get the endless degrees I'd expect one to get. No, I'm not talking about graduating high school OVER and OVER like *some* poor vampires... I'm talking about getting a plethora of degrees. If you had centuries to study you'd probably amass a huge number of degrees, under different names of course, in a variety of fields. Why not?

So let me toss this to you - what would YOU most like to do if you could live forever? Granted, the emotional pain would be obvious - but what would appeal the most to you about almost an unlimited lifespan? Travelling the world? Building a business empire? Hunting down that rare animal?

Do tell!

Game On!

Game on
by Stephanie Beck

Have you ever had a favorite series, but the story line you love so much just...stops? You check the library, you go online, you scour the web, but there simply is no 'next' book and there might not even be an explanation. I've had it happen. It was rough. I made it through, but I still wonder what happened to those characters.

In a situation like that, several things could have happened. The author might have gotten out of writing or maybe their career took off in another direction, forcing them to focus on another type of writing. Or, perhaps, the publisher the books were done with is having issues. Contract and house problems can tie up books for years. Yes. Years. Or maybe the author had a baby, is dealing with family issues, moved to a place with little to no internet, went off grid to raise alpacas, took up throat singing, developed carpal tunnel syndrome, opened a nail polish boutique, found their true calling in the field of interpretive dance...the list is endless.

At the end of the day, a writer has a artist's heart. They can be swayed and distracted. It is all part of the glorious creative process.

I've had many requests over the past two years for another werewolf story for my Creating Home series. I've had a mix of reasons why I was waiting, but now, oh my, am I happy to announce the ball is rolling for the next Creating Home story!

So far the series has A Winter Tale with Marshmallows (temporarily off the market) and Unraveling Midnight (very much on the market by its new publisher--Kensington Publishing's imprint, Lyrical Press). Owen's story is very much in the works. Hint Hint--there are corn fields. And softball. And more cornfields.

Haven't read the Creating Home series? Well, now's your chance. The storyline isn't too building, so jumping in at Unraveling Midnight is very easy. Take a visit with Scott and Lucy.

Unraveling Midnight by Stephanie Beck

Creating home, #2
An entanglement with a werewolf brings unexpected turns. Scott, a lone werewolf expelled from his pack, bends over backward to give his kids everything he can—including knitting lessons for his daughter. Learning to knit becomes much more appealing with Lucy Jamieson as the teacher. His heightened senses tell him the compassionate and beautiful human might be what he and his little band need, yet getting involved with Lucy means exposing her to his paranormal reality. Although Lucy’s childhood skewed her expectations of family, she recognizes and respects Scott’s desire to protect and provide for his kids. When Scott is hit by a truck, Lucy offers to help with the kids--and gets more than she bargained for after learning Scott’s true nature...

And I must confess, this is a very, very happy reunion for me. I missed my werewolves. I don't think any author wants to abandon a series. We fall in love with the characters and are invested in seeing them through. Now, back to work! You read, I'll write--it's a grand system!

All the best,

See you at Twisted World!

Wait... what day is it again? What TIME is it again?

EEEP!

Sorry about the late time and the short post, but this past month has been consumed by preparations for not one but two conventions. One I'm visiting with my students; Zenkaikon in April. The other, and the primary reason I'm so distracted, is The Twisted World; Villains and Vixens, where I'm a guest.

It's a relatively new event, and it's an enormous amount of fun.

So... if you're in the area, over eighteen, and want to meet me / talk to me / throw stuff at me in person, drop by. I'll be there all weekend!

Until next time,

Robert

Allie Berg hates talking about herself in the third person. It makes her feel crazier than she already is. She lives in Boulder, Colorado, in a house called Looking Glass Keep with fellow author Lily Edwards, and writes in a basement known as the Wonderland Scriptorium. Currently, the Keep is under siege by 6 squirrels — Rocky, Natasha, Boris, Alexi, Lucifer, Bullwinkle — and an as yet unnamed rabbit. She writes about the women she’d love to be, the men she wishes she could do, and the worlds she wishes she could see. Who tops, who bottoms, who with, how many, and what kind depends entirely on the story, but she loves Alpha males and Alpha females and relationships that heal and helping readers get their heart ons.
