The Perfect Mate for a Vampire By L.K. Below

An author’s job is to find the perfect match for their characters. What, you thought it was something different? Something sappy like providing entertainment for readers? *grins* Well, it is that too, but today I’m going to don my matchmaker hat and talk about one particular character, Terrence.

A vampire.

But let’s start with a question. Since vampires live for hundreds of years, do you think they would grow less picky over time? A little desperate, you might say, to find anyone? Or do you think they would hold out for their perfect match?

Terrence held out. Or at least, I think that’s what he’s doing. He’s certainly fixated on Lori, despite her attempts to rebuff him. Why did he choose her? Well, let’s go back to what a vampire seeks in a mate.

He would want somebody unreligious -- in other words, someone not likely to shove a cross in his face.

He would want somebody who isn’t overly fond of garlic (alas, that crosses me out).

He would want somebody whose dream vacation isn’t “a week at the beach under the hot sun.”

He would want somebody nocturnal. After all, what fun is it to only see someone for an hour or two before bed?

He would want… a prickly goth with commitment issues and clairvoyant abilities? A woman who threatens to stake him every time he annoys her (which is usually)? Well, maybe Lori doesn’t quite fit the bill of “a vampire’s perfect mate.”

Either way, I’m going to be giving away a copy of Stalking Shade to one lucky winner! All you need to do is comment.

Here’s more about what you could win:

Stalking Shade

Blurb:

When the leader of Lori's secret organization goes missing, her life starts to fall apart.

Lori is a member of the Order, a secret organization with an invincible leader, or so she believes--until he disappears. Their mission is all about protecting him, the Spenta Michos, and the Order degenerates into chaos once he's gone.

Lori is determined to find him, with or without the support of the other members. But a madman shadows her every move, and she can barely keep herself out of the growing pile of victims. To make matters worse, she has to deal with a persistent faux-vampire who seems to think she's meant for him.

How can she save the leader of her religion when she can barely protect herself?

Excerpt:

“See?” the bartender was telling the taller man. “If you want a night with Lori, it won’t be tonight. Wait and try some other time.”

Wise advice.

“What if I’m interested in more than a night?”

Lori nearly spewed her coffee on a couple walking past. She would need to keep an eye out for this guy. He gave a whole new meaning to persistence, and he hadn’t even approached her yet. She could only hope to scare him off by giving him the cold shoulder once he did.

Luckily, Ritchie came to her rescue. “Then you’re definitely outta luck, my man. I’ve known Lori for four years and she’s never had anything longer than a one night stand. She doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon.”

“I like a challenge.”

Lori resisted the urge to bang her head against the counter. She needed to evacuate. Now. DEFCON One.

She smacked her cup on the counter as Scissors muttered to Ritchie, “Does this guy have a death wish?” Presumably he was already en route to intercept her.

Lori fumbled with her change, starting to sort out what she owed. Changing her mind, she left the cash on the counter and shoved the bus pass into her pocket.

“Leaving so soon?” A deep, masculine voice. She recognized it with an inner groan.

Too late.

She turned slowly, thinking to nip this in the bud. He stood an inch or two taller than she did in her heeled boots, which made him at least six-four. His hair was black, cut short, and he had the most brilliant blue eyes she had ever seen. His easy smile proudly displayed a set of fangs. She narrowed her eyes. A faux-vampire.

Freaking wonderful.
