Why not Winter? by Barbara Edwards

After suffering through some wicked winter weather, it occurred to me that making winter a character in a book might be fun. I didn’t have to think about the strengths or weaknesses. 

I quickly realized winter is very popular with paranormal writers. C.L. Wilson featured The Winter King in a recent book. I loved the hero who’s heart was slowly freezing as he fought to save his world. 

I often use winter in my own writing. Late for the Wedding, a novella, takes place during a New England blizzard. Although winter isn’t a character, it does drive the plot.

Or Dixie’s Gift takes place during a snow storm. 

A sweet Christmas story to warm your heart.

I’m thinking about a character. Of course he could be cold or the other extreme of very hot.

Hmmm. That’s a thought. A hero who fights winter.

A Christmas Ghost by Barbara Edwards

Ghosts are appropriate for Halloween and I do have a ghost story. Recently  I’ve been writing about my paranormal Rhodes End series, but my Christmas novella features the ghost of a dog who doesn’t want to leave her mistress alone. It is based on memories of my Dixie who sent her days keeping me from becoming a hermit. She’d demand a walk. Taking me out of my house to enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise. She’d sleep on my feet, keeping them warm while I wrote. 

I didn’t really think about my companion passing away and when she was diagnosed with cancer, it broke my heart. She was in terrible pain, but I didn’t want to let her go. It took me a week but I finally made the wrenching decision to send her over the rainbow bridge.

Writing a Holiday story with paranormal characters by Barbara Edwards

Until I wrote this blog, I haven’t thought about using the holidays in my books. I did read a story by Christine Feehan about a Christmas ‘Dark Celebration’ by her Carpathian characters. I though it was well done since it took people who didn’t celebrate the holiday with those who had fond memories. It is a feel good story.

So would I chose to use a holiday?

I do write Christmas novellas and they’ve been published by The Wild Rose Press. They are about regular people, except for my ghost dog Dixie. I’ve added the url at the end of this since it is a paranormal story.

I have a free read on my blog about Halloween in Rhodes End the setting for my series.

So I guess I do use the holidays.

I’m not sure I could write a full-length novel about a single holiday. What do you think?
