Sharks! Tornadoes!! Part 2!!!

Last Thursday night, an odd phenomenon occurred. If you logged onto Twitter, you probably saw people talking about this even. It certainly set the internet buzzing. I'm talking about Sharknado. Yes, the SyFy channel manage to draw quite the buzz about sharks and tornadoes.

Even my husband, who sat beside me on the couch reading a book got caught up and was soon adding to the "REALLY?" and "SERIOUSLY?" moments.

That's the fun of watching that kind of movie, seeing how outrageous they can truly do things. How over the top they're willing really to go. Sharknado was just as outrageously bad as I thought it would be, which is good because for a few hours, I could forget about the tough day I had at work and just sit back and relax.

BTW, if you missed it the first time, SyFy will be airing Sharknado again tonight at 7 pm EST. I think it will be a good way to kick off my vacation.

Sharks and Tornadoes

I have to admit, I'm a bit of a weather buff. I watched every single episode of Storm Chasers when it was on the Discovery Channel. I watch Hurricane Hunters when it airs on the Weather Channel. (The fact there is a Weather Channel in the first place makes me all tingly).

Then there's the Discovery Channel's Shark Week. Don't even get me started there.

I also love all manner of WTFery.

For instance, I love the SyFy channel's B-movies. (So we've established that I like to watch television, right?) So when I saw the trailer for their latest offering, my little weather bug's heart nearly beat right out of my chest.

There are sharks.

There are tornadoes.

There are sharks IN tornadoes.

Wheeee!

That just hits all my weather, shark and WTFery buttons right there.

How I Met My Hero

Nineteen years ago today, I stood in front of my very own hero and exchanged vows. We were both extremely young then -- I was eighteen, out of high school only a year. He was twenty-one and sporting a high and tight, courtesy of the United States Marine Corps.

A lot of people (including a lot of family members) said we'd never last. We were too young to get married. Too young to settle down. And I'll admit, it wasn't love at first sight for us. In fact, if I went off first impressions, I never would have dated him, let alone married him. See, I kind of disliked him with an intense passion when we met in 1990. He was a show-off, arrogant and came off with an attitude where he thought he was such a smooth talker. I was even a little perturbed my ex-boyfriend had brought this guy around (yeah, that's a story for another time, but the ex and I were good friends).

When I got to know him a little better, because he annoyingly kept coming around to my lunch table everyday, but we ended up becoming really good friends. Then we started dating and he was shipped off to Paris Island, SC for basic training. That summer was spent exchanging letters. Letters I still keep in a box on my dresser even though they're just starting to turn brown from age.

Life wasn't all rainbows and cupcakes, but we're still together and that's my own personal HEA.

Better Research = Better Author (ADULT CONTENT)

This post today is of a highly sexual nature with explicit and crude language (really cause there's no other way to discuss this), so consider yourself warned.

~*~

"Give them lube!"

I actually shouted those words once to my ereader. No joke. Reading along in a really fabulous m/m novel and the two guys were getting all hot and bothered for each other big time. The one dude flips the other over and BAM rams right into his ass.

Um...OW!

I winced, flipped the page and kept reading. Next sex scene...same thing. Needless to say, I couldn't finish the book. I know books are about fantasy and sometimes we're supposed to suspend our disbelief, but there are times where I just can't. And this is one of them because I write stories where anal sex does happen.

Lemme give a little advice here, lean closer and I'll whisper it in your ear in case you're the shy type. Ready? "The anus is not a naturally lubricating orifice. It doesn't work like the vagina. This is true for both sexes - male and female. Seriously. Even the most experienced person is going to need some lube back there regardless of the genre. Got it? Okay."

Mostly this post is about doing thorough research. Now, I'm not saying that you should traipse off and have anal sex if that's not your thing. You can successfully write about it and never actually DO it. But you do need to do some research if you're going to write about something like this. And really, if you're writing something in that great of detail, you shouldn't be squeamish about the research, IMHO.

Knowing the basics is going to translate better on the page for a reader, and better research makes for a better author.
