Killing a character. Why?

This event usually takes place in action, adventure type fiction stories. There are many reasons why an author kills a character. If it is one of the bad guys…well, that usually doesn't bother the reader. After all they deserved to die because of their previous misdeeds. Right?
But what about when the author kills a good guy? There are many reasons for this and authors have many motives for killing someone. For one reason, good seldom prevails over bad without there being a cost. That cost is usually a living soul rather than a material object. Perhaps the writer has reached a point in the story when the character is no longer needed. He/she, the character, doesn't have a place in the progression of the story. They're usually one of the minor characters anyway so why continue to develop them. Developing a character takes time and effort. That's the simple reason. Out of the book out of the mind. (chuckle)
But what if it's one of the main characters? Again, there are many reasons. Maybe the character's death helps in the development of another character or spurs some type of action. There is also the emotional effect on the reader. Let's face it, most authors like to draw the reader into their stories. They want the reader to feel joy, triumph, loss and pain as if they are part of the tale rather than just an outsider looking in. Ending a character's life whether they a good or bad, is one way of doing this.

Readers please share your thoughts about this.
Authors, what are some of the reasons you kill a character?

The Generations of Teelan series by G.E. Stills
Six women from Earth's distant past, and their descendants, take you on a fantastic
adventure that starts on the Earth and spreads to the stars as they resist
a dreaded alien race bent on subjugation and annihilation of the civilized universe.

Unlike many of my erotic books this series is R rated.

After millions of years in suspended animation Kat is awakened on modern day Earth. Through information given to her by her artificial intelligence implant she is learns of her purpose in life. The alien invaders nearly destroyed all intelligent life from the Earth in the past and they will return to complete the destruction. Kat's mission is to prevent that from happening by preparing Earth's inhabitants to repel that invasion. Kat learns she won't need to accomplish that task alone. There are other women from her time scattered around the world in suspended animation and they will help. Kat and the other woman have unique abilities and together they will form a formidable team. Kat is compassionate by nature but ruthless against anyone who stands in the way of completing her mission.
And so begins a five book saga that spans from Earth's distant past to the near future among the stars. The Generations of Teelan series.

A Year to be Remembered

Or forgotten! So much happened in 2016 that I don't want to remember, but there's lots I won't forget.

The wonderful sounds of David Bowie, Prince, Glenn Frey, Isao Tomita... They are gone but the joy they gave to many will live on in their music. What would the sitcom landscape have looked like without Garry Marshall? I grew up with Patty Duke, I laughed with Gene Wilder, and then there was Haprer Lee. Who hasn't read To Kill a Mockingbird?

If the stories I write are remembered by just one person - I have accomplished something!

Ebook publishing took a real pounding this year with the closing of Ellora's Cave, and whether we like it or not, it was one of epublishing's industry giants, a pioneer, the first of its kind. As a beginner I had a goal, and a dream, to be published with EC and it came true. Things may not have gone like me and many others wanted but I'll never be sorry for having reached that goal. I learned so much from editors I worked with at EC, good things that'll I'll always have as part of my arsenal. Do I wish it had ended differently? Yes. But it's time to move on.

In recent weeks All Romance Ebooks closed. The first book I self published was released at ARe and I don't regret that either. Sure, I wish this one had ended differently also. Yet times change, publishers come and go, however...

I AM STILL HERE!

I can't imagine not putting my imagination and stories out there. Will I ever be bigger, will I publish that one story that zooms to the top of someone's Top Ten list? I don't know. One thing I do know is I'll keep telling my stories, I'll keep putting them out there, and I hope fans keep reading them, I hope new fans find me - I hope 2017 is better!

A few of my newest covers with stories coming soon:

Happy New Year to everyone and may your dreams come true.

Embrace Change for a Magical New Year

By Maureen L. Bonatch

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein

One of the most overused quotes, yet most of us continue to ignore the message. Perhaps that’s because most people like to be comfortable and don’t like change…even if it might be good for them.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”
– George Bernard Shaw

Yet when you read almost any book, there is always either an internal or external change involved with the character. No one wants to read a book about someone who never experienced any change or growth. We’d be turning the pages waiting for the “black moment” or the “Inciting incident” and all we’d find would be more of the same.

So why not write your own story of growth and progress for 2017?”

Calling all Writers

·      AutoCrit & Grammarly
o   I’ve been complaining (to myself, and anyone who would listen) about my endless editing process forever. This is one of the reasons why I have manuscripts piled up waiting for edits—until I decided no more excuses.
o   I stopped editing the way I always have and invested in new programs to change my process—so far it seems quicker, and better already.

What about you? Does Your Editing Process Need Tweaking?

·      Scrivener
o   I must admit, I haven’t explored this yet, but I’ve wanted to try it for years. I’m not sure why I waited so long (procrastination! Ack- change!) just to look at it. This year I’ll discover if I’m a Scrivener lover or hater.

Any Scrivener Lovers or Haters Here?

·      Text to Speech
o   As a Mac user I’ve had it all along—who knew?! It’s so much more effective than trying to read through my manuscript.

Your Home & Health

I think I’ve chased every diet and fad for most of my adult life. Only one program has ever worked for me, so I went back to it last year, and if I stick with it, it works.

1.    Physical Health
·      The Bad news= there is no magic pill to lose weight.
·       The Good News= Weight Watchers works- if you are ready to commit (don’t ask me about December- but I’m recommitted today!)
·      As for exercise, I blathered on about my treadmill desk last month, so I won’t bore you with that. Check that info out here

Brace Yourselves. January= a million diet & exercise commercials.

2.    Keeping Your House Healthy

Not much makes me happier than organizing stuff. That’s why I’ve been stocking up all kinds of tips on my Pinterest Board. I’ve tried the cleaning supplies over the door organization & love it and can’t wait to try the wrapping paper over the door organization.

·      Are You an Organization geek, like me? Check out some of the cool stuff I’ve come across on Pinterest here

·      Overwhelmed with emails? Especially after the holidays when everyone wants your email address? You know you don’t want any more emails, but can’t resist the lure of those treasured coupons! Check out this site to unsubscribe from a bunch at once.

·      Because I spend far too much time in cyberspace, if you follow my blog, I try to share tips like these that I’ve come across at least once a month or more.

3.    Keeping Your Mind Healthy- Never Stop Learning

They say keeping your mind active and engaged helps keep you young. With the plethora of online courses, there is no excuse not to keep exploring new things.

I admit, I love online classes and have taken a lot, but last year, I ventured into Freelance Writing.

·      You say there’s no time to cram one more thing into your busy day? Here’s some tips I shared on how to find some extra time in your day.

·      Interested in Freelance Writing yourself? (P.S. This is an affiliate link, but only cause I loved the course!) Here is the course I took- 30 Days or Less to Freelance Success

·      If you love Pinterest Gina also has a new course on becoming a Virtual Assistant for Pinterest. I’ve not tried this course- but I’ve found all of Gina’s courses/info to be very helpful & Pinterest seems to be hot right now so thought I’d share it. (Also- an affiliate link)

I hope you’ve found something to inspire you to make that change you’ve been considering for the new year. Write your own story and be the heroine you know yourself to be!

What Are Your Plans for the New Year? Do You Make Goals and/or Resolutions?

One of my writing goals for the Month of January is to use my new tools and tricks to finish edits on Book #2 of The Enchantlings Series entitled Not A Chance.

Here’s a little about my first book in The Enchantlings Series- Destiny Calling

Guess What? I changed updated the blurb a little :)

When the woman who raised Hope is murdered by something not human, Hope loses the only family she knows and discovers one she might wish she never met. With a touch that can make the desperate hopeful, Hope is the answer.

The only question is if she can deal with sibling rivalry, accept that entities feeding off despair exist, and determine if Griffith is the man of her dreams, or not at all what he seems.

About Maureen

Maureen Bonatch dreamt of becoming a Solid Gold Dancer. When the show ended, she followed other paths. Surviving motherhood to twins (so far) gave her the confidence to take belly dancing, declare herself a tequila connoisseur and act as biker babe with her alpha hubby.
Maureen grew up in small town Pennsylvania and her love of the four seasons—biking, sweat pants, hockey and hibernation—kept her there. While immersed in writing or reading paranormal romance and fantasy, she survives on caffeine, wine, music and laughter. A feisty Shih Tzu keeps her in line.

Guest Rosalie Redd: Interview with Tanen

Welcome to our guest Rosalie Redd. Rosalie interviews one of her characters.

Want to meet Tanen, the hero of Unimaginable Lover, book 3 in the Warriors of Lemuria series? I sat down with him for a brief interview…

Did you turn out the way your parents predicted?
Tanen adjusts himself in the chair and straightens the collar on his shirt. His brow furrows. “Much to my chagrin, no. My father was a warrior. I was a disappointment to him."

I squirm in my seat. I am uncomfortable in the presence of this large male. “Why is that?"

He crosses his arms, his biceps bulging tight against his shirt sleeves. “Because I didn't follow in his footsteps. Instead, I chose to pursue knowledge and my love of the ancient scriptures."

What do you value most?
He studies me for a moment before answering, his gaze flicking over my features. “King Noeh’s respect. I will do whatever he asks to help win this war against our enemy, the Gossum, and for our goddess, Alora."

I can't help but smile at his sincerity.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
The muscles in his arms visibly tense. His gaze tracks to my necklace, and he cracks his knuckles. "I'd rather not say."

My unease is once again forefront in my mind. The chair is suddenly rock-hard beneath my bottom and no amount of heat in the room will take away the chill running down my spine.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
The smile returns to his face. His blue eyes swirl with gold flecks, mixing together in a beautiful dance.

Despite my nervousness, I’m mesmerized.

He winks. "Ignorance."

When he didn't elaborate further, I clear my throat. “Thank you, Tanen, for the interview.”

He places his hand over mine and gives it a gentle squeeze. “You’re welcome, Rosalie.”

Blurb:

A shifter and a human together? Unimaginable…

One careless decision. The colony betrayed. Tanen’s only course is a desperate hunt for justice, but his solo mission is cut short when he’s mortally wounded during a fight. Rescued by a sweet, innocent female who nurses him back to health, he can’t deny the passion that burns between them. Now he must choose between his duty and honor or his desire for the precious, but forbidden, human female.

Broken promises and ruined love hardened Sheri’s heart. When she finds an injured and extraordinarily sexy man on her property, she’s pulled into a world she never imagined. As she nurses him back to health and they bond over their love of books, she’s torn between the lessons she learned from her rough past and the need to seek solace in Tanen’s arms, but she must learn to trust him, and herself, in order to survive.

Excerpt:

Sheri’s pulse raced as a strange mixture of shock and desire coursed through her veins. The tall, muscular stranger pinned her against the wall. One second she’d pressed 9-1—on her phone and the next, she was here, in his arms.
His biceps bulged, and she had a sudden urge to run her fingers over them, feel the steel that was below the surface, but her hands were trapped at his hips. She gripped his taut waist, and his heat bore into her, warming her fingers, tingling the sensitive nerves. Although caged in his embrace, he was gentle with her, holding back the strength that ebbed from him in waves. As he leaned in, his breath cascaded over her shoulder, warm and enticing.
“No infirmary.” His gravelly, rough command came out on a whisper.
She should’ve feared him, this stranger in her home trapping her in his arms, but instead, her insides melted, warmed by his touch, his voice, his scent. Something about him made her long for more.
So focused on the man who held her so close, she hadn’t noticed Coop. His insistent barks echoed through the house.
The man tensed, and in the process his lean body pressed tighter against hers. Her skin prickled at the contact.
With a quick glance over his shoulder, she caught sight of her pet. He growled, his lips curled over his fangs.
“No, Coop. Stop!”
His back legs bunched in preparation for his attack.
The man didn’t release her, but turned to face her dog. He held out one hand, palm open. “Halt.”
Coop’s growl faded.
He took a tentative step forward.
His nose quivered, and a small whimper eased from his chest. Her pet, an ex-police dog trained to track and defend, placed his muzzle under the stranger’s palm.
She gasped. If she hadn’t seen this for herself, she wouldn’t have believed it. He patted Coop on the head, and the dog’s tail beat against the floor.
The man’s eyes were red-rimmed, and sweat coated his forehead. “I have to leave…”
His eyes glazed over, and his grip around her waist loosened.
As her hands traveled along the space between them, her fingers trailed over the firm muscles of his abdomen and chest. The strength and power under his skin lit up her nerves. She moved a stray hair away from his brow and focused on his eyes. Bottomless pools of blue, they reflected the pain hidden behind his features.
Her chest constricted. “Please, let me help you.”
His gaze fell to her mouth, and he reached up to stroke her bottom lip with his thumb, teasing her. “How? Like this?”
Before she could stop him, he slipped his hand around the base of her neck and pulled her close. His mouth hovered over hers for the briefest moment. She closed her eyes, aware that doing so was an invitation all its own. Warm and welcoming, his lips tasted of musk and pepper. With unexpected tenderness, he teased her with his tongue, caressing the crease between her lips. The sensitive nerves tingled at the contact and she inhaled, parting her mouth.
Moaning softly, he deepened the kiss, and explored her. His tongue brushed the sore spot in her mouth, but instead of pain, his smooth caress eased some of the ache. The passionate need in his kiss bore into her, sending a wave of desire to her core. Beneath the thin material of her shirt, her nipples peaked, and she couldn’t hide her reaction to him. A slow groan rumbled in his chest.
