Pets in Sci-Fi Romance by Jessica E. Subject

PETS IN SCI-FI ROMANCE

by Author Jessica E. Subject

In my house, we've recently adopted a new dog after our other dog passed at the beginning of the year. As someone whose lived with some kind of pet for the majority of my life, it was hard for me to live without one. I've had dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, fish, ferrets, and a newt. Right now, we have our dog (a big puppy), and a green frog that adopted our pond last spring as it's home. We did our research, and helped it hibernate over the winter. We were so happy when we saw her this spring.

That got me thinking about the pets in my stories. In sci-fi romance, they can be anything, from pets we know on Earth to one's created from an author's imagination. I don't have many pets in my stories. And I'm not sure why. In the story I'm writing, circumstances don't make caring for any pet possible for the characters. Though, I want to write a pet into the end of the story. That's usually when I can add them, is at the end when the MCs lives are more settled. I'm going to try really hard to add pets into this shared universe series though. I already have many ideas for the next stories. And who knows? I may find a way to add one in earlier to my current WIP.

If you've been visiting this blog for a while, you've probably heard of the Pets in Space anthologies. Some of our authors have contributed, and we've had many guests on here with stories in the anthologies. All these stories have pets in them, from common to fantastical.

I do have one story where the one LI's pet introduced the couple in the first chapter. It was part of the second anthology, Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2, which made the USA Today bestseller list. In my story, Vilarra's pet is a tibbar, which looks like a cross between a ferret and a rabbit.

Here's more about GIB AND THE TIBBAR...

A dedicated Defender to the core, Gib is willing to go to any planet the Galactic Alliance sends him. That is, until he’s sent with his squad to Hemera for their Alorama ceremony, far from any threat of Erebus invasion and with no chance for promotion.

Vilarra has lived on Hemera all her life, working hard in the kitchens of the royal palace until she achieved lead hand. But learning of the universe beyond her world reveals her insignificance and shreds her sense of accomplishment and purpose.

With the help of a furry, little tibbar, Gib is determined to win the affection of Vilarra, prove to her how significant she is to him and the people who depend on her. But will his personal mission be cut short before he has the chance to win her heart?

*Formerly part of USA Today Bestselling Anthology Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2.

GIB AND THE TIBBAR IS AVAILABLE WIDE!

Enjoy an excerpt from GIB AND THE TIBBAR...

A high-pitched squeak sounded, and Gib’s surveillance partner returned to reaching for the branches. The little creature stood on its hind legs below Zair’s bench, peeping as if telling him off.

Gib couldn’t hold in his laughter. Not just at the other Defender’s reaction, but also the thoughts running through Zair’s mind, thoughts he’d failed to block in his fear.

“It’s not going to eat you.” Gib shook his head, wondering how his squad mate could see the creature as dangerous. “Would you please get down from there? Defenders are supposed to be brave and fierce. Right now, you’re neither.”

“Go to Gaspra, Mingot. And stay out of my head.” He yanked his plazer from his hip holster and aimed it at the critter. “If I don’t destroy it, it will bring death to everyone on this planet.”

Stepping into the line of fire, Gib yanked the weapon from his squad mate, thankful the safety remained on. “You’re being ridiculous. Besides, if you fire your weapon, you’ll cause a panic. The Hemera will think Erebus have arrived.”

The frightened Defender shook a foot at the creature. “Fine, then. Kick it into the fire. Or you could stomp on it.”

“Don’t you dare!” A Hemera woman burst from the bushes, storming toward Zair like a mother rehn protecting her young. She shoved him off his bench and shouldered past Gib before scooping the noisy creature into her hand. “This is my tibbar, not some kind of vermin.”

“Tibbar? Try nasty rodent that tried to eat me.” Zair smoothed out his uniform but kept his distance from the creature now perched on the woman’s shoulder.

“You’re both on nehbred.” She kicked dirt at them, her pink lips pursed and her dark eyes set in a deadly stare. “You don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to my pet or my planet.”

The Paws that Refreshes by Nancy Gideon

For someone who is retired, how can my life get so BUSY?! Blog posts to write, grocery shopping, meals to prepare, patio garden to weed and water, appointments to run to, dust to disturb, and don’t get me started on that next chapter I’ve been meaning to get to . . . Sometimes it feels like life’s hurriedness leaves me with little time to just reeeeelax. It took me a while (like four years!) to figure it out, but relaxation is something that has to be scheduled in, just like laundry. That’s where PRT (Pet Relaxation Therapy) comes in. I made that up, but I’ve found it IS the prescription for getting a better grip on the good, bad, and the obligatory things in life.

I’ve got three strictly indoor cats who dream of prowling the jungle in search of prey (okay, it’s just long grass and birds at the feeder). After a long Michigan winter of observing through storm windows, the second the screens go on, they start begging to go outside.

I am a firm believer in safely confining one’s preschoolers and four-legged friends. No one wants them running loose in their yards or in the street. That’s why backyards have fences, front doors have locks, and pets have leashes. We have a nice rear patio and huge fenced in yard filled with wild life enticers (field corn and bird feeders) that draw everything from song birds and squirrel families to the occasional ground hog, raccoon, or high-jumping deer. It never gets dull. It’s like having our own wild life channel with frequent trips to Menard’s for seed cakes. There’s nothing like opening the curtains to find diners waiting.

Without fail, by 10:00 am the lineup is at the door waiting to be leashed. While my fluffies rush out to consume grass (that will later be stepped in by bare feet where you least expect it), it’s basking time with the appropriate SPF. And while I slowly baste, I work out that next surprise plot twist or that next project outline. Ahhhhhh. The cats get their restricted stalking and I get my scenes set up. Win-Win!

So, snatch your writing (or plotting) opportunities where you can find them. Down time is wasted time when you could be fighting dragons or seducing a prince with your clever banter.

Where are your favorite places to soak up inspiration?

Pet Lovers PSA by Nancy Gideon

I don’t know about you, but my fur babies are family.

Any parent knows there’s nothing scarier than a baby being sick. The helplessness and worry that comes with not knowing what’s wrong and them not being able to tell you . . . I’ve got a grey hair and a worry line for each such occasion with two sons and a grandson. But the absolute worst is when it happens at night when there’s no one you can call without a trip to the ER.

There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for my pets. They provide me with such joy and love and entertainment, there’s no way to put a price on it! I currently have a household of my three foundling cats and my sister’s aged dog and, oh yeah, my adult son. Out of the seven of us, it’s the four four-legged family members who get the most attention and care. My “free” cats have cost me more in out-of-pocket doctor bills in the last five years than my own – and I had a knee replacement! But I’m not complaining. Shots, exams, tooth extractions, a weight loss program, prescription food x two, urinary blockages that required five days hospitalization, and just last night, a new potential emergency that kept me up most of the early AM hours on Vet websites because . . .

Onions are poisonous to cats!

Who knew?! I didn’t. So when my four-year-old Keanu snatched a chunk of onion from our pizza, I didn’t think much of it . . . until I couldn’t stop thinking about it . . . all night long. Because it was after hours at our vet’s office, I headed to the Internet and found that onions and cats aren’t just a bad mix, they are a TOXIC one! Here’s one of the articles out of dozens that spell it out like a pet owner’s horror story.

My Cat Ate Onion! Here’s What to Do (Vet Answer)

I don’t “do” math (as my 13-year-old grandguy will attest!). Going through article after article that state 5g of onion per kilogram of body weight or 0.5% of cat’s total weigh is enough to cause harm with symptoms that may not appear for WEEKS after ingestion did not put my mind at ease (here’s me at 1:00 AM picking onion off cold pizza to place it in measuring spoons). As if vomiting and diarrhea isn’t bad enough, the real scary fact is life-threatening irreversible damage to red blood cells that carry oxygen to organs and muscles. At one in the morning, Keanu wasn’t interested in my examination for possible pale gums, rapid breathing, high heart rate, lethargy and the aforementioned vomiting and diarrhea. Purring rapidly became growling. The wait until I could contact my vet at 9:00 seemed sooooo far away.

Withholding breakfast from a big male cat while his elder “sisters” are gobbling theirs is no fun for cat or owner. It was only 7:00 AM and he was giving me those big, “Why are you being mean to me?” eyes. So, after hours of reading dozens of vet-written articles, I went to a website called JustAnswer.com and within less than 10 minutes was online with a vet. After answering his questions about Keanu’s situation, including his history, size and weight and the amount ingested, within a few minutes, I had my Mom-relieving answer. Being a big boy weighing over 10 pounds, an onion piece of less than a tsp was harmless.

Bad Kitty! No onions . . . but here’s your prescription food breakfast.

Another case of knowing is half the battle. Onions and cats don’t mix – Ever! And if you have a flower garden and grow alliums (like we do) – they are in the onion family and also tres toxic! Make sure your pet can’t get into them.

Excuse me while I go back to cuddling my fur baby.

That’s for the Birds

By Maureen Bonatch

                                                    Hanging out on our deck

May 4th is Bird Day. Who knew? Not me, but then again, I’ve never considered myself a ‘bird person’. I’m not a bird watcher, even though it’s a popular hobby enjoyed by all ages—or am I? It seems the word is out with the feathered species that they have an uninterested party in the vicinity and they’ve made it their mission to convert me.

Flew the Coop

As a child my grandmother always had a pet parakeet, and it was always named Babe. That’s right, when one Babe met his or her demise, another Babe would take their place. I have no idea how many Babes there were, it could’ve only been two but since I was young I found the idea of seamlessly replacing a pet a little odd. I was also traumatized by being dive-bombed when she’d let Babe fly around her apartment—and by her story of how Babe liked to perch on her glasses and once fell into her cereal bowl while doing so.

A Little Bird Told Me

Despite my decision to remain uninterested in the avian species, in the years that I rose as an early bird long before the sun to write I’d crack my window in the spring when the birds welcomed the day with song. The volume at that time of the year, for that brief time in the morning, is nothing like the rest of the year. It made me feel better to know ‘someone’ else was up with me in the wee hours of the morning.

Eagle Eye

But, I digress. Back to the bird watching. The birds around our home seem to really want to ensure that I watch them whether I want to or not.

  • They’ve come ‘knocking’ on the window a few times in the last few years to torment Scruff. He’s always been fascinated by birds. When they swoop past him on the deck they are one of the only things that causes him to bark rather than just huff. He desperately wants to be their friend and from this visitor, and others, it seems as from this bird's-eye view that the feeling is mutual.
                                                                Peering in at Scruff

  •  The birds ensure they erect multiple nests crowding so close to our house as if they’re vying for a room inside. We had to remove the wreath from our front door since they always put a nest there and wouldn’t permit anyone to enter or exit without a huge fuss. Last year we were surrounded with had two on the trees near the front porch and one in the back. So far this year, I’ve found there the first one outside our laundry room window. When I peered out this morning I got a beady stink eye right back.
                                                              Hello from the kitchen!

  • They tend to like to sit in the gutter right outside my office where I work like a sitting duck for them to repeatedly startle me as they swoop in or dangle their tail down from their perch.
                                                                 Hello from upstairs!

So maybe I am somewhat morphing into a bird watcher as they vie for my attention as I used to do with my Mom by saying, “look at me” while I did cartwheels through the yard. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll change and have a parakeet named Babe?

GUEST: Sabine Priestley #PetsInSpace

One of the reasons I love writing fiction is the sheer breadth of possibilities. I write Sci-Fi and Paranormal/Urban Fantasy Romance, and world building is my favorite part. Let’s face it, normal is boring.

I wrote a contemporary once. It was my proverbial first book, and I’m sure it’s an odorous heap of badly formed plotlines. The problem I have is that I keep wanting to do things that are impossible. You know, like flying without a plane and interstellar travel that doesn’t take light-years.

In order to get from planet A to planet B in my worlds, I use portals. Until the fall of the Sandarian Empire in the Alien Attachments series, portals were under the control of the Portal Masters. Things have changed, and those with a certain type of psi can travel using Distorters.

Due to the intervention of a mysterious advanced alien, called Orion, my main characters in Orion’s Gate end up traveling back in time. This event takes place in two books, from different perspectives. The first is from Sensate, which is available now in Embrace the Romance, Pets In Space 2 anthology.

You have to love pets in space and there’s a crazy fun assortment in this 800+ page beast.
In the following excerpt Marco Dar has just narrowly escaped being fried by outlanders, and ports back to his ship to find a very different Armond Nolde. The stoic, emotionless albino is smiling and Cleary bonded with a sapphire skinned woman from another galaxy.

Zara swung around just as Marco slammed into her, sending them both flying. They crashed onto the dining table. A flash of pain shot through her shoulder, and the table shattered on impact, spilling them to the ground. She landed on top of Marco just as Armond’s data pad skidded to a stop at the feet of a blue-black skinned woman of ample proportions who stood next to Armond himself.

Marco glanced around and laughed hysterically. “WhooHoo! What a f'ing ride that was!” He cupped her face with both hands and planted a kiss on her lips before she could protest.

Electricity shot through her, and her psi exploded in a wave of pleasure. She pushed off his chest, which left her straddling him. Memories flooded back. They’d always had chemistry, but their psi had never entwined. This was new. She couldn’t decide if she wanted to bolt or stay.

“Sorry, darling.” He held her upper arms, his touch hot and firm. Amusement danced in his brown eyes. “I almost died just now. Kind of glad to be here.”

Sitting on him like this had her body buzzing from his presence. She clambered off in a hurry and stood. “Are you ok?”

“Oh, baby you have no idea. I was running for my life back there, then you just popped right in front of me.” He rolled over and got to his feet facing Armond and the woman, rubbing the small of his back. “Dude, what happened? And who’s this?”

The strange woman said something to Armond in a language Zara had never heard and she’d heard a lot. Her voice was oddly stereophonic. Like two people speaking at once.

Marco shifted his gaze to her, and she fell into those brown eyes. “I just kissed you right? I’m not hallucinating this?”

“Yes, you just kissed me.” She could still feel the press of his lips and the resonance of her psi. “When that thing beeped, Armond touched it and disappeared. Scared me half to death.”

“You left her?” Marco demanded. “Where the hell did you go?”

“It appears the question isn’t where, but when,” Armond said.

Marco eyed Armond and the woman. Something was seriously off. And those weren’t the same clothes Armond had been wearing when he left. The woman rambled on in a strange language, and she had her hand in the crook of Armond’s elbow.

The albino was actually letting her touch him.

“Armond, when did you change your clothes, and who is this?” Marco asked.

“I could ask the same of her.” Armond nodded to Zara, then slid his arm around the waist of the woman in an openly affectionate move.

“What the hells is going on here?” Maybe he hadn’t survived after all and was, in fact, lying dead in that pit-hole back on Sigma. He met Zara’s gaze and she shook her head. He stepped closer to her. If he was dead, and she wasn’t real, he was going to make the most of it. Cupping her face in his hands he kissed her again. Their psi twirled into a sensual mist.

She opened to him for just a moment before shoving him backward. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Reality Check. I figure I must be hallucinating. None of this makes any sense.” And that damn psi thing, what was that?

She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, but it wasn’t an aggressive move. More tender than anything.
He wanted more of that.
“Did we make it?” Ru spoke up from his pocket.
“Dude, almost forgot you.” He pulled out the com.
“You made it,” Zara said smiling. “But we’ve got a little situation here.”
“A situation indeed,” Armond said. “Where are we?”
“Don’t you think we should get out of here before chatting?” Zara asked. “You know, outlanders and all.”
“We’re in outlander territory?” The concern in Armond’s voice was the most bizarre thing.
* * *
Figuring out what the f--- was happening was going to have to wait. Zara was right. He started to head to the bridge, but paused, and faced the Armond and his companion. “Do you know what ship you’re in?”

“This is the No Commitments. Delta class transport ship. One of twenty-three currently owned and operated by the Cavacent Clan, the head of which is Lord Rucon Cavacent, who was responsible for naming the vessel that is primarily yours.”

“And what’s our current passcode?”

“Snow White.”

That wasn’t right. But it was the correct topic. Rucon had a fascination with Earth’s fairy tales and always selected things having to do with them. “What’s the date? Earth date, relative.”

“March 19, 2018.”

“Dude, that’s three months from now.”

“Fascinating. It appears we have arrived from the future. Perhaps a singularity encountered during our jump.”

He didn’t know how, but that was definitely Armond.

He shot a glance at Zara. What was going on with their psi? He bolted for the bridge to set their course back to safer space. He set course to Xycor, and activated the hyperdrive before returning to the galley.

The others were sitting around the table. Zara had made a pot of tea, which Armond was actually drinking. Shit just got more and more crazy. He pulled out a chair, flipped it around, and straddled it next to Zara. He wanted her close. She was speaking animatedly to the woman who’d arrived with Armond.

Ru was propped at an angle on Zara’s com unit.

When he’d been running for his life, it wasn’t Ru or even himself he thought of. It was her. Zara Mancini.

“You’re not going to believe this,” Zara said. She placed her hand over his for a moment, then yanked it back, her eyes widening under furrowed brows. “Sorry.” It was almost a whisper.

“Don’t apologize. Now, someone tell me what’s going on.” He wanted to reach out and take her hand in his, but knew it wouldn’t be welcomed. Not yet.

“First, introductions,” Zara tapped on the table. “This lovely lady is Vin.

“She’s a friend of Armond’s.”

Marco shook her hand, which elicited a giggle from the woman, who spoke again in the strange language.

“What’s so funny?” Marco asked.

“Shaking of the hand,” Armond said. “It is not a custom where she’s from.”

Interesting. “So she’s not from Federation space?”

Vin and Armond shared a look. After she spoke again, Armond replied. “I don’t see any reason not to.”

“Huh?”

“Vin can understand us because of this here.” He tapped a colorful device in his ear. “I can understand her the same way, but we can’t speak each other’s language directly as yet. To answer your question, she’s not from our galaxy.”

“Not from our galaxy?” Marco turned to Zara. “Surely this warrants another reality check?” He wanted one, that was for sure.

“Don’t even think about it.”

And then Armond smiled.

And the universe backhanded him upside the head. Armond Nolde smiling? “You’re very different, you know that?”

“I’m sure I am.” He took Vin’s hand and kissed the back of it.

That was it. All the gods had returned to the galaxy and surely the hells had frozen over.

GUEST: Michelle Howard #PetsInSpace

Dogs and Soldiers. Perfect combination and perfect ingredients for an action filled romance. I’m excited I got to combine the two things I love in my story for the Pets in Space-Embrace the Romance anthology. My hero is a former soldier who was injured at the end of a major war. Thanks to the heroine and a sexy bargain, he ends helping my version of a K9 known as Bogan. From there danger, love and a new partnership soon follows.

While writing this story, I had the pleasure of reading and researching K9’s for law enforcement and walked away more impressed then I already was beforehand. I was torn between many breeds and final settled on the Belgian Malinois because of their beauty and agility. I hope those reading my story take away the same level of pleasure and enjoyment I did from these terrific animals.

Here’s a peek from Wired for Love.

Hunter took a step forward, negating the attempt at distance.  “One night.”
Narelle’s heart pounded. Licking her lips, she repeated his words “One night? For what?”
Pinning her to the wall with his body, his rough palm cupped her cheek. “It ends now. No more games. You know what I want in exchange.”
Shivers worked their way through her body. Tendrils of desire awakened and coiled around her lower half. She tried to speak and had to clear her throat twice. “Are you really so desperate you’d bargain for a night to get me in bed?”
“Yes.” Simple and ruthless. No remorse in the blunt tone he used. “You have no idea how desperate I am to crawl between your thighs and see if you’re as hot on the inside as you are on the outside.”
“Pathetic, Hunter. You’re pathetic.” But her voice thickened. “What makes you think I want to sleep with you?”
His lips twitched. “Oh, we wouldn’t be sleeping.”
