My Made-Up Holiday

 By Maureen Bonatch

Scruff said that no matter what holiday- he wants presents!

Today is a holiday in my neck of the woods, (and I’m not talking about Sidewalk Egg Frying Day), but as with most holidays, it’s not one that everyone celebrates, depending upon where you live and how much you love this holiday. We all have our favorites and make a bigger deal out of some than others.

Happy…Merry…Holiday!

Now I’ve been posting on the 4th of the month at Paranormal Romantics for, well, many years. So this year, rather than discuss the 4th of July/Independence Day, I thought I’d venture into another topic about holidays — how they keep multiplying.

Depending on where you look, you can probably find a holiday for about every day of the year. I guess if you really want to celebrate something, you’ll find something.

A few places to find odd holidays include:

If there are so many different holidays, I don’t see why we can’t suggest some new ones. (Although if we look around, they might already exist) So here’s mine.

Sweatpants Day

To be honest, I daydreamed about having a holiday called sweatpants day much more often when I didn’t work remotely. Since I started working remotely almost five years ago, I’ve made it my personal holiday almost every day (or yoga pants day) since video conference calls are only the waist up. But, I didn’t use to get to work in comfort.

Prior to that, I worked in several offices that had specific dress codes, which included the dreaded nylons. Not the cute ones that you see nowadays, but the ones with the lovely reinforced toes, enough compression to cut off circulation, and the tendency to get a runner about five minutes after putting them on. In a nutshell—although they often came in an egg—they were really uncomfortable, especially when you paired them with some heels that looked gorgeous if you were sitting but inflicted pain or discomfort with each step.

This is why most of us would gladly contribute five to ten dollars every once in a while to have a jeans day. I don’t even like jeans unless they are stretchy, but uncomfortable times call for compromise.

So I’d dream of the day that Sweatpants Day would become a holiday. Since it never happened, I had to work remotely to make it my own.

My New Release is a Halloween Christmas Mash Up

By Maureen Bonatch

I’ve been known to complain about Christmas in July. When my twins were young I'd insist that we weren’t putting up Christmas decorations until at a minimum—the Thanksgiving table was cleared.

Despite what I held off in my home, it didn’t stop the retailers, radio stations and television shows from pumping out those holiday themed items as early as they could.

Then 2020 rolled around and my favorite month—November for National Novel Writing Month.

I knew what story I was going to write, a dark paranormal romance. November 1st rolled around and I sat down to get those 50,000 words in…and I didn’t get too far. The year weighted heavily on me and for the first time in years, I couldn’t get inspired. Until I changed my story.

I realized one reason why many people like to start the holiday early.

The thoughts and images of spreading cheer with family and friends elevated my mood. I binged on holiday movies and played Christmas music way earlier than I ever have to write this holiday story.

Except in MAGIC, MIMOSAS & MISTLETOE (a story from my Charmed Cocktail Cozy series), I found a way to combine Halloween and Christmas. Because what witch worth her broom would choose Halloween over Christmas?

Oh, and it's a paranormal cozy mystery, so there might be a murder or two...and some ghosts.

A little About MAGIC, MIMOSAS & MISTLETOE

I don’t see dead people, but my dog does.

Hi, I’m Marissa Hale. When my friend, Grace invites me to visit the Inn she inherited, I’m high-tailing it back to my home state of Pennsylvania. Like most things in life, there are strings attached to her inheritance—and these ones have twinkly lights. The Inn, and the town, are Christmas themed. No witch worth her broom would choose Christmas over Halloween, unless that witch’s bloodline is the magic mainline for keeping the yuletide spirit alive.

Her aunt’s death was already suspicious, but then we stumble upon a dead body amongst the poinsettias that resembles one of Santa’s fabled elves. It sure seems like someone is trying to force Grace to sell Kringle Inn. I’m going to need all the help I can get to solve these crimes, and save Christmas, but when the only witnesses are a pig, and a ghost, I’m not sure that’s going to be enough…

An Excerpt featuring Marissa and her cat, Jasper, from my book MAGIC, MIMOSAS & MISTLETOE

Everyone would be a suspect until I proved them innocent—or I tired of determining if there had truly been a murder. It was better than contemplating the Christmas holidays when it wasn't Halloween yet. “It's nothing like that. The spell provides a way to ride along with someone and see and hear what they see. Like a little spy.”

“What do you mean by a ride along? If you're referring to me, which I'm guessing by the look in your two current eyes, I can tell you it will not work. You're,” he raked his gaze over me, “many, many times my size.”

“Not in person, silly. I would ride along in your mind.”

Jasper let out a hiss and jumped to the floor, backing away with his tail raised. “In my mind? What kind of hocus pocus are you getting into? Most likely, it wouldn't work. With your lackluster spelling abilities, you could end up trapped there, and that wouldn't be good for anyone. Who would remember to feed me?”

“Enough of the insults about my spelling.” Most of them were true, but I was practicing and getting better. Potions were more my thing. Well, they were getting to be my thing. “It's not an evil spell, so I shouldn't get more black streaks in my hair.”

“I'm not worried about your hair. Besides, there's nothing wrong with black hair. Feast your eyes on my glorious fur.” He swished his tail from side-to-side. “Yes, you're lovely, whatever. Now, listen. I know this spell sounds far-fetched, but it could be fun.”

“Nope, not fun at all. Zero fun. Nada.” He kept backing away toward the door.

“But I thought you wanted to be my familiar?” It was low of me to play that card, but I knew how to sway him to my favor.

Jasper stopped and remained silent for a moment as he considered it. “I don't see how that matters in this situation.”

“Our bond could grow stronger with a spell like this. Who knows? You might gain some magic yourself.” I did not know if any of this was true.

He paused and lowered his tail. “You're joking.”

“No, I've heard it could happen. I can't guarantee it would, but it's possible. If anything were to go wrong, Grace is here. She could fix it.”

Jasper nodded. “That much I can agree on. Grace is much better at spelling than you'll ever be, and I've never seen one dark strand in her hair.”

I clapped my hands together. “We can find out much more about everyone this way.”

“You mean you can. Obviously, this is how I always find out things. You're just jealous you don't have my stealth and want it for yourself. There are benefits to being small.”

I stood from the bed and grabbed my oversized purse. “Let's get started.” “Now?” Jasper's eyes widened. I stopped digging in the bottomless pit that was my purse. “Why not? We can try to approach Wilber again.”

“What, and get stomped on with one of his cloven hoofs, or mixed into his dinner trough?”

I waved him off. “I can help you with finessing the conversation. I already have all the ingredients gathered here in my purse, so let's get ready.”

“You were optimistic that I was going to agree to this spell, I see.” Jasper leapt on the bed. “Elevated to the role of familiar, you say?”

“Maybe? I knew you'd see my side.” I laid out a small bowl and the ingredients, including the one item Sabina insisted was essential. I had to make it myself to personalize it to the spell. With limited time and supplies available for crafting, it wasn’t perfect.

“What in the tuna is that?” Jasper shrieked.

“This?” I knew the tiny homemade voodoo cat doll might push him over the edge. “It's nothing. The figure helps to make sure this works right and that I end up in the correct person's thoughts that we intended the spell for.”

Mulder came stumbling into the room, falling over his feet on the slippery floor and taking a nosedive. He came to a stop with a skittering of paws at the foot of the bed. His irritated huffs and raised behind confirmed that he’d discovered something of interest under the bed.

Jasper studied me with a wary expression. “Don't you think we need to tell Grace what we're doing here first?”

I shrugged and sat on the bed. “She's busy. No need to worry her. Besides, what could go wrong?”

Make the Most of Your Time

 By Maureen Bonatch

This year has been very different for most of us. I've worked remotely long before the pandemic began, so that aspect of my life hasn't changed, but with many other things cancelled and the daily schedule book full of not much of anything outside of the house many days begin to seem the same.

As I look back over the past year it seems like it's one big blur of the same, but if I look a little closer I realize that it's not. My work schedule didn't change, but I still wanted to make use of the time that I had each day to push myself to learn some new things and revisit some old hobbies that I've neglected. To not let "2020 win".

How to Take Your Mind Off 2020

  • Turn a Fail into a Win: Got any old hobbies that you've neglected? Books you've stacked up but felt like you never had time to read? Make the time to enjoy what you already have. I'm starting to learn to use Scrivener. I bought the writing tool a few years ago and each time I opened it I became overwhelmed and went back to my old standby of using word. I used National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWri) to try it out with the most basic features. I still have a lot to learn but I'm making some progress—and setting the word targets per writing session has improved my productivity.
  • Use What You Got: Before you go out and buy new stuff, check out what you already have. Maybe it's cleaning out your closet or watching some of those old movies you've collected. I revisited a writing course that I bought a few years ago and started but didn't finish. I'm still working through it but it's inspired me to make more time for learning.
  • Learn Something New: Take your mind off your stress by focusing on learning something new such as a craft, or home project. I choose to learn more about self-publishing. I self-published my first short story (Till Death). This story started as my NaNoWri project in 2019 and I didn't finish that year. This psychological thriller was the perfect story to lift my mood this year.

Till Death- and all the Friday the 13th stories are free to read on Kindle Unlimited

  • Explore Something New: Expand upon a hobby you already have. Till Death is a psychological thriller, which is a new genre for me, but I've also started writing in a new genre- Witch Cozy Mystery. It's really very close to what I already write and a lot of fun! Stay tuned for a whole series coming out next year starting with Curses, Cats & Corpses! (P.S. I won NaNoWri this year with the third book in that series tentatively titled- Magic, Mimosas & Mistletoe)

Conquer & Clean Up the "What Day Is It?" Conundrum:

My trick for helping to avoid the blurring of days is to have a schedule in the home specific to the day. It's a win-win because it keeps me grounded on the day of the week and I can get chores done little by little each day. Such as one day of the week I vacuum a certain floor, or mop, or clean the bathrooms on another day but maintain the same schedule each week.

If all fails—bake some comfort food, like cookies!

If you're signed up for my newsletter, or follow my author Facebook page- you might be already baking up some goodies because you would've gotten this free cookbook already. My newsletter subscribers get all the details on sales, new releases and goodies like these first. Be sure to sign up so you don't miss anything all year long!

Keep On Creeping On

Halloween is over, and November has arrived, meaning that many are already full force into preparing for the Christmas season — poor Thanksgiving gets skipped over most of the time.

I can't say that I'm not eager to embrace sappy holiday shows to bring a little cheer to 2020, but I can say that I'm not quite ready to give up the spooky aspect of this time of the year.

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer, temperatures are dropping and soon…it will be Friday the 13th. Friday, November 13th to be exact.

So if you're not quite ready to start with the holiday cheer and want to 'keep your creep on' a little longer then you're in luck. Just ask Gina in my upcoming release, Till Death. She has strong feelings about good and bad luck.

Till Death is available for pre-order now- just click right here

Honor, obey or slay...

Blurb:

Gina believes that mirrors hold bits of the soul, a rabbit's foot brings good luck, and that marriage vows are until death. But most of all, she’s blindly followed her husband Rick’s philosophy. Nasty men get one chance to convert from their abusive ways —or suffer the consequences they bring upon themselves.
But when she meets George, Gina begins to question everything Rick has led her to believe about men. Now Rick has George lined up to be the next man to be redeemed. Will black widow Gina honor and obey and weave her web around George, or will she become the next victim?

Here's an Excerpt:

Honor and obey. This was the life I knew. The one I’d created as Rick’s wife. I had to see it through. I lowered my gaze to the ground. “I meant, don’t give the neighborhood more to talk about than it already has.”
“Neighborhood? Do you mean that old man who’s been sniffing around here?” Rick smoothed his face back into the mask he shared with the world and glanced toward George’s house.
“No.” I didn’t dare look to see if George was lingering. It was a mistake to remind Rick that I might’ve made a friend. A male friend who didn’t fit into the mold Rick insisted most men did. But Rick made a lot of ruckus that could’ve attracted other attention, so when two ladies walked down the street, not giving us a second glance, I inclined my head their way.
Rick’s gaze followed mine and then returned to me. “I thought you didn’t worry about those things? About what people might think? Most people don’t see what’s justified in the world, they don’t understand the road to redemption and how we are paving it with the blood of those who don’t appreciate a woman.”      “I don’t care what they think, but this time it’s different.” I was different. But I couldn’t tell Rick that I’d begun to question the truths of performing this justice with him. All it had taken was one old man who’d experienced a loving marriage. A man who saw me as more than a cook, cleaner, and punching bag.
“It’s not really different when the end result is the same.” Rick pushed past me. He entered my house as if he owned the place, and as my husband, technically he did.

All I Want for Christmas is Paranormal Romance

Every year I eagerly await all the Christmas romance that comes along. Back in the nineties it was Harlequin seasonal books. Usually 1 or 2 in each of their imprints. I would get them as stocking stuffers.

These days holidays in romance happens sooner. We start seeing those Christmas themed books in October and Hallmark starts their movie run not long after. And I get to see my favorite combo in all sorts of ways.

Except... I have always lamented the lack of good holiday themed paranormal romance. For obvious reasons--different world building that may or may not include a celebration of the Christmas holiday season--we don't get nearly the numbers.

So this year, I decided to do something about it and wrote my own Christmas-themed paranormal romance! Not only that...I  joined together with 5 other fantastic paranormal romance authors and they wrote holiday paranormal romance.

We've put it all together in a limited-time boxed set anthology--Christmas After Dark! I hope you'll check it out!

Baby, it’s cold outside…

Cozy up and get lost in supernatural worlds of shifters, gods, Atlanteans, werewolves, witches, and more… A holiday treat guaranteed to jingle your bells!

CHRISTMAS AFTER DARK is a boxed set anthology of novellas from six of the hottest paranormal romance authors out there.

Warning: Christmas After Dark contains alpha heroes, sassy heroines, sizzling connections, holiday traditions, wicked intentions, snow and mistletoe, heart-racing suspense, and a little something naughty (but not too naughty, because we don’t want to bump you off the nice list). And it’s our gift to you…

The problem is she’s become a loner, is obsessively neat, and allergic to dogs. Bad news for this wolf. Still, Cade’s not giving up on her or on taking his rightful place as alpha. Give a Priceless Holiday Gift to Yourself & Others

The holiday season is upon us and generally that means there’s at least one person, if not more, that you're challenged to find the perfect gift to give.  Then there are some that you may not want to give a gift to at all.

The holidays also often mean a time of increased stress, too many obligations, too little time, and too much overindulging, which can lead to a month of frustration.

Perhaps this holiday it’s time to look a little closer at the magic of the season. To think beyond material gifts and give something  priceless that can benefit ourselves as well as the beneficiary.

Priceless Gifts to Give

What gift do you give to the person who has everything, or someone that you don't even know to make their holiday a little more joyful?

More Patience- Before you get frustrated with the line you must wait in, or the crowds, remember that we’re each dealing with our own stressors every day, not just during the holidays.

Holidays just happen to be able to bring out the worst in some people, but give the benefit of the doubt and consider that there may be underlying reasons. This could be someone's first holiday season without a loved one, or perhaps someone is ill, or family is unable to be home due to finances or deployment. Don’t add to their frustration, or your own, by losing your patience.

A Compliment or a Smile-  Just like negativity can spark a bad mood, smiles and being pleasant can be contagious. Give someone the gift of a compliment—it may be the only kind thing they hear today.

Forgiveness- This gift has the power to allow you to find more joy in the holiday season and all year long.

What to Return

Resentment, Anger & Grudges – Often the things we want the least, that hurt us the most, are the hardest to let go. Don't continue to regift these painful emotions. These feelings only hurt ourselves and can destroy relationships.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to return these so you can gain the gift of discovering peace.

Give a Helping Hand

Write Reviews- You’re heard many times before how much authors value reviews, but it’s not just authors who benefit. We all do. Writing a review for any product benefits you, too.

If you’re like me, you do much of your shopping online, or you at least do a little online research before you decide what to buy. Reviews for any product help make decisions on what’s a good gift, or one that wouldn’t meet your expectations. If we all take the time to review most of the products we buy, it can save us all time in choosing quality, appropriate gifts for our loved ones—and ourselves.

Other Ways to Win a Gift for Yourself

It seems that when I start holiday shopping, that’s when I find things I want for myself, but I feel guilty because I should be buying for others. Here are a few contests that you can enter to try to win a guilt-free prize for yourself.

Hurry- this contest wraps up on December 5th

Your chance to win a Kindle Fire 7 Tablet- $25 worth of ebooks from Amazon (winner’s choice, up to 5 total books) - $20 Amazon gift card- $15 worth of ebooks from Amazon (winner’s choice, up to 3 total books)- $10 Amazon gift card  Enter Right Here

A Dessert for Romance Readers (& Writers)

I love that many of us have been sharing holiday recipes this month. I am a big fan of food. It's very important in my life and to my happiness and well being. Lol. The recipe I'm sharing today isn't one that has to wait for holidays either.

You may not want to share the name with friends (blush), but it is the perfect recipe for a romance reader (or writer).

BETTER THAN SEX CAKE

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (even better if it's German chocolate cake mix)
  • Any ingredients (eggs, veggie oil) for the cake mix
  • 1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 bottle caramel sauce (can be ice cream sauce)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 bag crushed toffee/chocolate (Heath bar) topping (you can find it in the chocolate chips section of the grocery store)

Instructions

Step 1 - Prep
Preheat oven to 350F. Spray a 9x13 inch baking dish with nonstick spray.

Step 2 - Cake
Prepare cake mix according to package directions, using milk instead of water. Pour batter into prepared dish and bake according to directions on box. Let cake cool completely.

Step 3 - The "Sauces"
Use the end of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over cake.
The more the better to absorb the liquids. I do rows of holes.

Pour sweetened condensed milk over the cake, making sure to fill the holes.
Pour the caramel sauce over the cake. (If it's the ice cream sauce, be sure to heat for 10-15 seconds in the microwave first. NOT in a metal container though.)

Step 4 - Whip
Whip heavy whipping cream on medium high speed with an electric mixer. With mixer running, add powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Whip until stiff peaks form.

BTW--Yes you can substitute Cool Whip or any other ready-made whipped cream for this step to save yourself some time. I just love homemade whipped cream so much better though.

Step 5 - Top
Spread whipped cream over the cake. Dribble more caramel sauce over the top. Finish by sprinkling with the crushed toffee/chocolate (Heath candy). The more toffee topping the better in my opinion. This is not the time to be stingy.

I highly recommend you refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving.

Honestly, I love this cake even better the next day. WARNING: This cake will be a bit soggy, like Tres Leches, but it's so tasty, that's part of the joy.

Do keep refrigerated.

Here's a fun video showing you how in speedy-time from My Recipes!
