Being a Writer and Pet Parent...with Megan Slayer

I'm a vocal pet person. I love cats, dogs, bunnies... well, you get the idea. I need critters around my house because they keep me sane.

I've got three dogs and three cats. To say the least, it's a zoo. But I love them. I do. I've always said I have a soft spot for critters with issues. One cat thinks he's a dog. One cat hates...everyone...sometimes even me. The third cat I'm pretty sure doesn't have any bones in his body. He's liquid. One dog, the water dog, is deathly afraid of water. Another dog swears she's a person and she's the mother of my kid. Then there's my shadow dog. If I'm not there, she's not happy. She's got serious separation anxiety.

So now you might be wondering what all of this has to do with writing. Sometimes I wonder, too.

Okay, no. I know, but bear with me.

I'm sitting here trying to decide what to write about. I mean, I'm a writer. I have ideas. I have characters talking to me. Writing shouldn't be hard.

Now factor in critters. One dog wants me to pet him. Another wants to sit on the cushion RIGHT next to me. He breathes on the computer and plugs the fan. Okay... gotta move. I head to the desk. One cat wants to sit behind me on the office chair. So much for proper posture. Another cats wants to knock EVERYTHING down because he's not getting attention and/or fed on his time. The third cat shows up just to sleep on the desk beside the computer because he has to keep me company. I don't mind him being there. He sheds all over everywhere, but it's not that big of a deal.

Enter the dogs. The one who can't live without me has to stroll by and toot before she jumps onto the couch in the office. The second one wants to chase the cat sleeping by the computer. Growls, howls and hissing ensues. Third dog strolls by, leaving a stench trail, before she heads upstairs to sleep on the landing.

Now I'm supposed to write characters having sex. Hmm. I'm pretty sure I'll have to let the room air out and a few critters go to sleep before I get anything written.

Such is the glamorous life of a writer.

Celebrating 1 Year of being published!

Hey everyone!

It's an exciting time for me right now, because as of July 1, 2012, I will have been published for one year. My debut novella, Celestial Seduction released last year as part of Decadent Publishing's 1Night Stand line. It was the first scifi romance in the line, and the beginning of a dream come true.

It was fellow Paranormal Romantics author, Rebecca Royce who encouraged me to write a story for this line. Her story, One Night With A Wolf had been contracted, and she thought it would be a good fit for me. And the journey began.

So, I thought I'd share with you an excerpt from Celestial Seduction:

“Remember how I said I needed an open-minded partner?” She nodded, her eyes catching a quick glance from his before returning to her stomach. Just a couple more minutes and he’d be finished.

He prepared to hold her down should she freak out when he told her he came from space. “I’m not exactly like you and most of the people on Earth. I’m….different.”

“Like a demon or a guardian angel?”

He laughed. It sounded forced, but he needed to stay focused on healing Carrie rather than mating with her. “No, you’re thinking paranormal. Try science fiction.”

She began to squirm under him, but he didn’t need to restrain her. “A….clone? Artificial intelligence?”

He finished healing her and lay down beside her. His thumb ran across her lips, wanting to taste them again, but knowing he probably wouldn’t. “Try alien.”

Her mouth curved into a smile. “Alien. I don’t think so. You’re missing the big head and eyes, the green skin, the willowy limbs.”

He touched his fingertips to the side of her head. “Like this?” He flashed an image of the alien Earthlings always expected to arrive from space.

Yeah, but how’d you do that?” Fear shone in her eyes.

Leaving the bed, he sat on one of the loveseats. The night was over. In a second, she’d dress as quickly as possible and rush out of the room. “I told you, I’m an alien from outer space.” Perhaps he shouldn’t have told her. He would spend the rest of the night alone.

Another new author on the blog & giveaway!

Hello, everyone! I'm Jessica Subject, and I'm another new author on the blog, so I thought I'd introduce myself. But first, I must thank the original members of the blog, including Annie Nicholas who invited me to be a part of Paranormal Romantics. Thank you! :)

About me. Well, I'm a wife, a mother of two, and I also have a part-time job on top of all my writing. I started officially putting pen to paper when my daughter was in kindergarten. She hated reading, to the point where she would scream and cry when she had reading homework to do. I thought if I wrote her a book about something she liked (superheroes), she might enjoy reading more. Well, that story turned into my Mark of the Stars series (and the superheroes turned into aliens), which she can't read until she's much older. But now she loves reading and reads above her grade level in English, and even reads French.

My first published work is Celestial Seduction, which released in July 2011 as part of Decadent Publishing's 1Night Stand series. I have two other stories as part of this series, Beneath the Starry Sky, and Unknown Futures. The first story in The Underground scifi/dystopian series, Never Gonna Let You Go, released in January, and The Zurian Child, my first novel, and the first book in my Mark of the Stars series released in March. And in the next two days, I will have two more books releasing, Satin Sheets in Space (a 1Night Stand story) and An Unexpected Return.

Giveaway!!

For your chance to WIN an ebook copy of any of my backlist books at Decadent Publishing, simply leave a comment below with your email address. Winner will be drawn May 31, 2012.

Here's an excerpt from Satin Sheets in Space which releases tomorrow from Decadent Publishing:

“Why don’t we go somewhere else and continue this? We can get a room if you want.” She didn’t care where as long as they were off the street and had a little more privacy. The possibility of someone catching them excited her, but she didn’t want the rest of their time together interrupted.

“I have the perfect place, if you’re willing to trust me.”

How could she? She’d just met him, didn’t even know his name. Yet she refused to say no, couldn’t have him walk away and leave her alone and needy. She’d go wherever he wanted to take her, whether to a bondage dungeon or a closet. So long as he took her, over and over. Because, for once, she’d found a guy who pleasured her without her asking. She planned to return the favor as soon as they left the alley.

With one hand gripping her ass, he skimmed a finger back across her slick folds. “Well, do you?”

Only aware of her growing need, she nodded.

He returned to her slippery heat, plunging in and out. “First, tell me your name.”

“Danyka.” Her name rolled out as she moaned with his movements.

“Okay, Danyka, hold onto me.”

How could she not? He’d transformed her knees, her entire body, to jelly with his touch. She already gripped his sleeves, afraid if she let go she’d fall, slide down the wall.

Pulling some kind of remote from his pocket, he pressed the single white button on its surface. He slipped the device back into his pouch then leaned forward to reclaim her mouth.

She had her eyes closed, her lips pressed against his, when the sensation started. First, a tingling in her hands and feet, as he swept his digits deep inside her. The buzz spread up her arms and legs until it engulfed her entire body. She no longer sensed the ground below her.

The man continued to drive his fingers into her core with vigor, ridding her of the urge to pull away and find out what was happening to her. She landed with a thud, feeling returning to her limbs. Nothing stopped the man who held her, though. He continued to ravage her mouth, her jaw, her neck, keeping her pressed against the wall.

But something felt different. Gone was the hard brick pressing through her corset and against her skin. She reached behind to brush her hand along the surface. Soft. Almost like cushioned satin.

With a whimper, she pushed the strange man away. Where was she? What had she been thinking? This is the stupidest, most insane thing I’ve ever done.

The Prince Charming she’d had the fortune of being set up with peered down at her, his gaze intense and filled with lust. “My name is Galan, and we’re in my spaceship.”

At least she now knew his name, but wait…. Spaceship? She stared at the man, disillusioned. She could think of no other explanation for how they had traveled to a new location with the press of a button. Oh God, she’d been abducted by an alien. How would she get out of this situation? The first time she’d done something spur-of-the-moment, and she’d ended up being finger-fucked by an extraterrestrial.

First Look: Once Her Man, Always Her Man

The first book in my new sub-series for Decadent Publishing releases this April and here's your first look at the cover for Once Her Man, Always Her Man.  This is part of Decadent Publishing's 1Night Stand series.

Fulfilling a favor and executing a business plan, Luke Dexter arrived at Dallas’ Sybarite Club for a one-night stand. He never imagined that in the darkened club with bluesy strains of jazz playing he’d come face to face with the woman he left behind a decade earlier.

Rebecca Rainier fell in love with Luke Dexter in high school and was crushed when he dumped her to join the Marines after 9/11. Now, waiting for a date her best friend and business partner set up, she’s unprepared when Luke walks in.

Can Luke and Rebecca bridge the pain of a decade long abandonment in one cold Texas night?

Keep up with Heather via her website.

Do You Love Madame Eve?

This year I was lucky enough to be invited to write a Christmas story for Madame Eve's 1Night Stand Holiday Anthology with Decadent Publishing. What was even more exciting for me is the other authors involved in this anthology too--Desiree Holt, Cerise Deland, Liia Ann White, DL Jackson, Stacey Kennedy, and Clarissa Yip. We all wrote a story that was included in anthology and then our individual stories are being released separately.

If you're unfamiliar with Madame Eve's story, they are brief erotic romance short stories that tell the stories of one night that leads a couple to their happy ever after. It is a multi-authored world, meaning that each story tells a different story by a different author.

In my case, this time I wrote about Bethany and Lucas, who happens to be the Alpha of his wolf pack. Bethy is human. But, in I'll Be Mated For Christmas, Bethany can have everything she wants if only she will take it.

Check out the anthology and the whole series. There are a TON of fabulous authors writing this series.
