Pet Phrases, Shifters and Writing with @meganslayer #gayromance #iamwriting

I'm working on a new Sanctuary book and have been doing edits for other stories. My focus has been all over the place because I've had some family things happening, plus some issues with my dog. She's getting older, slowing down a little and has developed a few issues. It's been tough-ish going.
As I read through this last edit, I realized I have certain unintended pet phrases I use. My characters sigh a lot. They chuckle often and have lots of long stares. That's not bad, but when you've plowed through four edits in one week and smoothed out two submissions, you start to notice the repetitions. I know writers have those pet phrases. Anyone who says they don't...well, I don't agree with them.
Another thing I noticed is the characters eat pretty much the same things. Okay, not exactly the same thing, but there's been a lot of pasta and steak in my books. I wish I could say I'm indulging in a lot of steak - hey, it's good and I like it - but I'm not. As for the pasta, I'm making a lot since tot needs the carbs for running. I never realized how much it's bled into my work until I did these edits. I'm chalking the steak thing up to writing more Sanctuary books and those meat-eater boys are hungry. Grin.
I do have to add this note, the pasta thing has been over the course of the last year and before. The edits aren't for brand new books, but for re-issues. Still, that's a lot of spaghetti and linguine. Oh well.
I'm finally getting a chance to work on new material and have some subs in at various places. I've got the newest Sanctuary book started on my laptop. Maybe they'll have steak. I don't see the shifters as pasta eaters.
What about you? Do you have pet phrases you use? Even in everyday speech? I'd love to know I'm not alone. Grin.

Speaking of the Sanctuary, Book 10 has just been released!! Restoring His Howl. Check it out!!

Restoring His Howl (Sanctuary Book 10)

by Megan Slayer (Author)
M/M, Anal Sex, Masturbation
Contemporary Paranormal Erotic Romance
From Resplendence Publishing

Opposites can attract, but can they make the love last?
Dillon came to the Sanctuary to hide, but also to heal. He’d been abused and needed a safe place to come into his own. He never expected to find a partner, but love came looking for him. Can he accept what he deserves or will he push away a chance at forever because he feels unlovable?
Cinders knows from the moment he sees Dillon that he wants the wolf shifter for his own. But can a jaguar shifter and a wolf shifter really pair up? He doesn’t know, but he’s banking on the attraction to pay off. What he doesn’t expect is how deep Dillon’s scars run. Is he strong enough to see beyond what’s happened to Dillon and help create a future for them together?
Anything’s possible when the jaguar shifter, a former stripper, and the wolf shifter figure out how to restore his howl.

“You can talk. Well, fuck me. That’s amazing. I thought you could, but since you don’t, I wondered. You’ve got a nice voice,” Cinders said. He grinned, his bright teeth standing out against his mocha skin. “You’re cute, too.”
Dillon longed to taste Cinders’ mouth and kiss him. Would it feel like heaven?
“So we’re supposed to be at a party tomorrow. I’ve got some costumes. Most of it is tear-away stuff, but it’ll work for one night. You’re welcome to try on anything I’ve got and find something that fits. I’ve got dibs on the naughty cop, though.” He laughed. The throaty sound echoed in the room. “Want to?”
Dillon almost asked what Cinders meant but nodded instead.
“What? I got one word out of you, and now, you won’t talk to me?” Cinders frowned. “If you’re going to use my clothes, you’ve got to speak to me.”
The wolf stood up within Dillon and watched Cinders. The animal tensed.
For a split-second, Dillon had thought Cinders meant he’d make Dillon fuck him for the clothes. He fought the urge to shake his head. Fucking to get things was part of his old life. He had a new one here at the Sanctuary.
Cinders smiled, and his shoulders slumped. “I’m sorry.”
“Why?” Dillon managed. Despite his best attempts, he couldn’t get out any other words. He spent most of his time tongue-tied, but around Cinders, something different happened. His wolf took notice, which was unusual. The wolf distrusted more individuals than his human side did. If the wolf cared to pay Cinders attention, then that meant something, right? He needed to keep an eye on the panther shifter.
“I’m being pushy,” Cinders said. “Ryan will tell you I’m good at pushy. Quiet? Not a chance. Look, you don’t have to talk. I can do that for both of us.” He waved to his end of the corridor. “Come over when you’re ready, and pick out a costume. The jaguar and I won’t bite. Promise.”
Dillon nodded. The first step to healing had to be getting out of his comfort zone. Going with Cinders was a leap. God help him, he really wanted to leap.

Out Now! Merging Their Roar by @MeganSlayer #lionshifters #twins #PNR

Merging Their Roar

Sanctuary, Book 8
By Megan Slayer
M/M, M/M/M, Ménage, Anal Sex, Oral Sex
Novella
Resplendence Publishing

The right piece for their perfect triad seems to be the one man who doesn’t seem to fit at all.

Eli and Silas have done pretty much everything twins can do together within reason. They share lovers and are inseparable. Now, the lions want free. They want someone to be with both of them and can understand the dual sides to their collective nature. But the twins are scarred by their past. Eli uses his people skills to please and get by, while Silas takes the quieter, introverted and angry approach. Can these two find a perfect complement? Does that person even exist?

Owen Cantrell believes he’s not only worthy of the shifters, but he’s their missing piece. He’s human and hasn’t been around shifters, but he’s not afraid. What could go wrong?

When these three get together, there are plenty of sparks, but things can’t be perfect forever. The way Eli, Silas and Owen deal with their problems and everything thrown their way will prove if they aren’t meant to be or if they can go the distance.

Note: Merging Their Roar is part of the Sanctuary series. Each book features different characters and can be enjoyed as a standalone story.

“We’d like you to live here. Teach the shifters about being human—like manners, technology, how to exist outside of the Sanctuary, along with how to spot a group like Wet Dreams and how to run away. I think you’re what we need.”

Markas leaned his elbows on the desk. “What do you think?”

None of what he’d been told was what he’d expected. They trusted him? Despite what he’d admitted and the very real possibility he’d truly try to fuck a shifter. He doubted Markas was telling the truth.

“You’ve been through a lot in your short life. I can’t imagine coming out. I was lucky. After I shifted, John accepted me. Our family of shifters is accepted here and I’d like them to be accepted in public, too.”

Owen nodded. He wasn’t the most socially savvy person, but he was willing to help. “What do you want me to do and when?”

“You’re welcome to move in as soon as you’d like. We’ve got plenty of room. Once you’re settled, I want you to choose a few shifters to work with. They’ll be your responsibility, but I’m sure they’ll all want you to pick them,” Markas said.

“Like one or two?”

“I’d say start with one. Don’t overwhelm yourself.”

“Then…okay.” He had to think this through. Too bad, he really wanted to accept and his mouth wasn’t working with his brain. “I’m game, but I need to get out of my lease.”

“Done.”

“What?”

Owen supposed Markas meant he’d help until the lease was up.

“Trust me.” Markas stood. “Let me introduce you around.” He rounded the desk. When Owen stood, Markas stopped. “But remember, we’re all watching you. If you lie or sell us out…I’ll know. If you think you’re a good double agent, you’re not. If you double cross any of us, I’ll unleash my lion on your ass. I’m not afraid, and my lion gives no fucks.”

Wrapping Up and Moving On with @MeganSlayer #writing #thinking #debating

I've been thinking long and hard about what I wanted to write for this post. An end of the year wrap-up? Maybe a memorial for things lost this year? A plan for 2017? Lots comes to mind.

In the last few days, a lot has happened. Christmas! Hanukkah! Let's not forget those. The time of joy and giving. Watching the wonder on the faces of those who received a gift--be it an actual item or an act of generosity. I'll cherish that.

Now, I know. There has been some sadness. The passing of legends, almost legends and those we just plain love. Trust me. My heart breaks for them. I've loved Gene Wilder since the movie Willie Wonka scared the crap out of (I was convinced if I ate the chocolate, I'd end up in the TV, too...and yet I still ate the chocolate.) So many people. So many creative fires dying out.

But there are always going to be new ones. New fires we don't even realize are there. Maybe you and I are the fires of tomorrow. Who knows.

I'm sad about the closing of a few of my publishers, too. I don't like to speak ill of the closed, but I can honestly say, I didn't have bad feelings towards those who closed or even bad experiences. Would I like to have the endings gone differently? Sure. Who wouldn't? But I can't say the experiences weren't without merit. Maybe that was me still eating that chocolate.

I saw the shuttering of a few businesses I never thought would (Borders, Fictionwise, ARe) and are now gone. Poof! Okay, so not all were lost in 2016, but you get the idea. This biz is nutsy.

Back to the chocolate, but I'm not giving up on my love of writing. I don't know if I'll ever become that author who hits all of the lists and my book title is on the lips of every reader in the world. That doesn't mean I won't try. It doesn't mean I won't keep telling the stories I've been doing so for the last... golly, I've been writing since 2007 and published since 2009. I'm not one of the longer running authors in the biz, but that chocolate still sure tastes good.
So what is my plan for the next year? To keep writing. I've got books in the pipeline with multiple houses and fun things planned for the year. I'm not quitting. Not by a long shot and not when I still love the chocolate. Maybe one day I will be shrunken and land on the TV. Maybe not. Either way, I'm still going to keep slogging it out with the boys from Cedarwood, the shifters in the Sanctuary, the Battle Scarred paranormals and my Seeing Me male models. Why not? I get to play with male models in the morning, argue with everyday guys in Cedarwood in the afternoon, then wrestle with lion shifters at night. Sounds like a good gig to me.

What about you? What are your plans for 2017? Anything special? You know where I'll be. Writing, reading and enjoying the ride.

His phone beeped and vibrated in his hand. He tensed at the sound. The noise came back. He should look at the screen. Should. His heart hammered, and the lion clawed at him from within. He turned his attention from the big cat to the phone. A gigantic arrow with Justin’s photo in it bounced back and forth on the screen. He touched the arrow and held his breath. Justin had replied.
Hi. Saw you, too. I’d like to talk. Tell me about you.
Holy shit. Excitement rippled through him. The lion stood at attention within him, equally thrilled. Zeus blew out the breath he’d held. What should he say? He didn’t want to sound silly.
I’m thirty-three. Single. I work @ a shelter. He paused. What else should he add? I’m looking for love.
He hit send before he could delete the words he’d typed. He probably sounded ridiculous. When Justin replied, Zeus yelped. He glanced over at Joe, who didn’t seem to have noticed.
Love, huh? Are you a romantic?
A romantic? More like a horny bastard who wanted sex that might become love. He drummed his fingers on the desk. Answering would be smart.
Justin replied first. Oh. You’re unsure? I’m a romantic. There’s someone out there for everyone, and I’m looking for my someone.
Damn. Justin was a romantic or, at least, came across that way. Maybe, the sweetness was a little much, but oh well. He’d never know if he didn’t try. Want to meet? You sound like my kind of guy.

Getting Down to Writing After a Break with @MeganSlayer

There has been a lot of things going on in my life. Lately it seems like I can't keep up with everything. I had surgery a little over two weeks ago and getting back up to speed afterwards is taking its toll on me. I thought I'd just bounce back. I'd be up and running after a few days.

Physically, I'm up and running. For the most part, I'm healed. It's nice, since I'm a mom and keep up with the tot requires me to be on my toes.

But the writing part...that's where I feel like I'm falling behind. I don't have a huge schedule or a ton of deadlines set up for me. What I do have is a few deadlines set up for me. Now usually, I thrive on deadlines. I need that structure. I was that dork in school who loved to know ahead of time when everything was due and what was expected so I could get them done. On the writing front, I even worked myself hard to meet all of my deadlines ahead of time so I knew when I healed I wasn't going to have stuff hanging over my head.

I had this crazy notion that while I was in the hospital, I'd write in my notebook. Yeah, that didn't happen. When I could keep my eyes open, I wasn't thinking about stories. Nope. I was thinking about going home and keeping something down.

Then I thought, I'm home, so I'll get all of this writing done. I didn't. I watched movies, slept a lot and read a couple of books. But writing? It wasn't happening. I'd open the notebook or look at the laptop and lose not only interest but enthusiasm.

I hated it.

I'm back on the horse, so to speak. I've gotten words written and pages down. I've got two notebooks full of more words that need to go into the computer. It's happening. Little by little. Baby steps.

What did I realize though as I healed was that I needed a break. It wasn't that the words weren't there. It wasn't that I'd lost the touch. I needed a break. My body said, um, yeah. Time to heal.

I listened. I took those two weeks off. I didn't force myself to write. I didn't allow myself to feel guilty because I wasn't writing. To my shock, it worked. I don't make myself write just yet. If the words flow, I jump on the feeling. If they don't...I find something else to do until they do.

What about you? Have you ever had this happen? Ever felt like you were falling behind or failing? Did you ever need a break? I'd love to know. We can commiserate.

The Writing Process and Me (Or, How I Survive as an Author....)

I figured I'd answer a few questions I get asked often concerning my writing. Survival as an author can be scary. It's kind of a lone wolf existence sometimes. You're responsible for your own posts/promo/work/etc. But this is a great big family, too. Ask and someone will answer and probably help. So here are the answers to these frequently asked questions.

1) What am I working on?

Glad you asked! I'm knee deep in a new series featuring Club Desire, from Resplendence Publishing. In fact, I just turned in the latest book, Raining Men, to the publisher. Here's a little bit about book 1 -

Tied Desire by Megan Slayer
Club Desire Book 1

M/M, Anal Sex, Toys, Spanking, BDSM
Novella
Resplendence Publishing

Get your rocks off however you want at Club Desire. We’re not easy and we’re not free, but we are discreet. Find your fantasy in the club.

Ford Gehrig likes everything hard—his racing and his sex life. His career driving stock trucks is riding high. He’s a top performing rookie. Club Desire fulfills his needs for pain in his pleasure. But even a strong man has his breaking point. His wounds run deep and won’t be easy to overcome. Will the club be his salvation or his downfall?

Master Zane knows the rough side of the club well. He’s been at Desire longer than many of the Doms. Few subs turn his head like Ford. He wants the hot blond on his table, against his cross and in his bed. Nothing at the club comes easily, but Zane’s not one to give up. Will he be able to pierce the protective walls around Ford’s heart, or will his own past be the barrier he can’t destroy?

Only time, some cuffs and a few spankings will tell if this tied desire is meant to last.

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I write about couples in the midst of a second chance. First love is great, but I like the redemption story. How did they manage to get back together or make the second time around work? Usually a second time around is more complicated and emotional. I like playing with that emotional aspect. I also love playing with hot guys. I mean, who doesn't? I get to do lots of great research and look at images of said hot men. Yeah, it's a tough job, but someone has to do it.

3) Why do I write what I do?

Writing for me is like breathing. I have to do it. I love letting the characters run and play. It's fun. If I didn't I'd have to listen to the characters talk anyway. I might as well write them. Grin. Plus, I love writing. I've always been good at stringing words together - be it in lesson plans or papers for school. Getting to make the stories hot just added a whole lot of good to the deal. I also love telling tales of second chances. Lots of times, life isn't one single instance. There are bits and moments where things come around. I like being able to show that. Plus... hot men!

4) How does your writing process work?

I usually write a bit of the plot out in my notebooks. I love to do some of the work by hand. Once I get a decent amount of the story in the notebook, I sit down at the computer. Usually 3-5k words at a time, I go at it. Hopefully the book works out and doesn't need major revision. Sometimes it does. I send it by my crit partners and beta readers and then swoosh! Off to the editor. Not the most exciting process, but it's the truth. *G*

What about you? What are your favorite questions to answer? Or better yet, are there questions you want ME to answer? Put 'em in the comments. I'll do my best.

That's How the Cookie...er...Game Crumbles... with Megan Slayer

Odd title for a post, I know. Right? It is. I've just finished watching my favorite sport--football. I'm a die hard, dyed in the wool Bengals fan. You're not? That's okay. Not even a fan of football? That's fine, too. Different strokes for different folks.

So why post about football on a paranormal romance blog? The answer is simple--well, it is for me. I use my football games as therapy and a reason to write. I get a few hours (hopefully) to sit and write. I'm a late night writer. Once everyone is in bed and the house is quiet, that's when I put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. But on Sunday, I give myself the luxury of writing. The family leaves me alone and allows me to be creative.

Now I bet you're wondering. How does this apply to cookies and crumbling...and writing? As I said, I just finished watching my beloved Bengals play. It's Monday night and I have to admit, the Bengals do NOT deal well with prime time play. They don't handle that kind of stress well. The first half started off fine, but I had this feeling and I was right. The curse of prime time came back to haunt us.

What does this have to do with me? I'm not on the team. I'm a fan. I'm pretty sure I bleed black and orange. What this has to do with writing is that it's really hard to write romance and hard to write happy thoughts when the team you love... isn't performing.

I'm trying to finish my latest Sanctuary story and it's hard as heck to focus when I'm spending more time hollering at the television--hey, I get into my games--than I am at putting those fingers to the keyboard. I know where the story has to go. That's the beauty of the notes I took the night before. I'm prepared, but I can't get my head into the story.

There are a few pluses to all of this. Yes, my team lost. Yes, I would've liked a better ending than the quarterback DROPPING the football. But...there is a silver lining. We made it to the playoffs. We're in. We didn't get a bye week, but then again, we didn't exactly earn it. Have I given up on my team? Nope. There's always next week--well, there is until the season is over and then there's always next season.

I have to add in here that the Bengals have an interesting history. For the lion's share of my fandom, they haven't been the best team. That's taught me something very important and I apply it to my writing--the game, team, story might not be working out right now, but that's no reason to give up.

The same applies to tonight. I wanted to scream at the players and I admit, I turned the channel as soon as the game ended. But I'm not giving up on my team and I didn't give up on my story. Sanctuary, Book 5 has been written. Shortly, it'll be turned in.

So that's how the cookie crumbles. You win some and you lose some, but never give up. I'm not. I'm still a card carrying member of Who Dey nation and I love my Bengals. I love my lion shifters, too. Thank goodness I can have a rest until next week--at least with football. I'm going to need it. As for writing? I've got another work in progress calling my name. I'll get up in the morning and start on that story. Never surrender.

:-)

Bonding with Ben
Sanctuary Book 4
Resplendence Publishing
M/M, Anal Sex, Masturbation
Novella

Sometimes the biggest hurdle in life is accepting who you are and what you want.
Joe Dallas thought he’d escaped the draw of the shifters at the Sanctuary. He doesn’t mind. With his tendency to keep relationships simple, he doesn’t want to get involved with a lion shifter. Then there’s Ben. The quiet shifter piques Joe’s attention. When Joe accompanies Ben on a rescue mission, he realizes the attraction isn’t one-sided. But can a shifter and a human really make a relationship work? Joe isn’t sure.

Ben knows who he wants in his life and bed—Joe. The lion wants to bond with the human he desires. The difference in their species doesn’t bother him a bit. Will the shifter be able to convince Joe they have a future or will fear dominate and destroy the love before it can blossom?

Warning: Once you’re in the sight of this shifter, you may be the “mane” attraction. This lion doesn’t give up until he has his prey.

What was it about Ben that kept Joe thinking about him? He closed his eyes and stood under the searing-hot spray. With other guys, Joe did the casual thing. Have a good time but no strings, so no one got hurt. Until now, that plan had worked. Right?
Kind of. Sure, he had nothing holding him down, but when he looked at John and Markas together, jealousy hit. He wanted that kind of devotion. Would he get it with Ben?

Ben was certainly different. He was innocent and deserved someone worthy of him. Joe wasn’t worthy of too much of anything. He’d had a little too much fun and broken a few too many hearts along the way. Ben needed true devotion and a good match.

Joe snorted. He was great as a reporter and nosy as hell, but he sucked at relationships. Ben deserved a partner, not a player.

Still, he liked Ben. He worried about the shifter and wanted him to be happy. Could Joe make Ben happy? Doubtful.

Joe opened his eyes and washed the cum from his body. He’d be a friend and help Ben find a suitable partner. No romantic entanglements—just friendship—even if it damn near killed him not to be the man in Ben’s arms and bed.

This was one situation he couldn’t screw up.

That Awkward Moment When... with @MeganSlayer

Anyone ever have that awkward moment when you're staring at the computer and you know you should be doing something, but nothing comes to mind? Maybe it's right after a gigantic writing session or a frantic promo blast. It could be after the family has gone to bed and you're alone with the story or you've found a quiet nook at your favorite writing spot... Ever had that moment?

I have.

I had a fellow author tell me that authors should never have downtime with a story. There should never be a moment when he or she cannot find some sort of words to put on the page.

Here's the thing. Authors do have this problem. It's called writer's block. It can be called procrastination. It's also been known to go by the name of NaNo Overload.

Ever heard of those?

I have. I've lived them. I am living them.

I just finished NaNo. Know what that is? National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo for short). It's every November. 50,000 words in 30 days. To some, this is therapy. To others, torture. Some use this as their way to catch up and get wordage in. Others simply stare at the screen and try not to cry due to stress.

Me? I had my moments of tears. I mean, 50,000 words is a lot of words. Okay, maybe not for Stephen King or Nora Roberts, but it is for me. There's some serious stress involved. I had moments where the words flew from my fingers and I thought, yeah, I got this.

I did got this...so to speak. I nailed it. 50,330 as of yesterday at 11:30 pm and the story isn't done yet. That's the best feeling--the story isn't done, but I reached the minimum word goal. Phew. Now to get print length where I want to sub the book requires 60,000, but I've got at least that left in the notes, plus two sex scenes to write. So yay me!

But now I'm at that awkward moment when I'm staring at the computer screen. I know I should be writing. I even know WHAT I should be writing. But the words aren't coming. They're stuck or on strike. I'm not sure.

Either way, I did get to blog today and got to talk to you, so that's pretty good. Have YOU ever had that awkward moment? Want to talk about it? Commiserate? I'm all ears.

How about a snippet from my latest release, since I'm here. Sure!

Nat has always known he’s a beta. No question. He’s drawn to Syd and wants to find out if their existence at the Sanctuary should be more than platonic. When he and Syd are called upon to bring back more lions from the petting zoo, he not only sees Syd’s true potential, but realizes his true feelings for the fellow shifter.

Can these two shifters forge an alliance and grow together or will their heated experiments between the sheets be the end for them both?

“I’m not happy about this, but I’ll leave you alone. Get your rest, and I’ll check on you later, okay?” Nat trailed his fingers down Syd’s chest. “You worry me.”
“Sorry,” Syd mumbled. He hadn’t meant to be a bother. He waited for the other lion shifter to leave the room then he flopped onto the bed. He unzipped and eased his still rock-hard dick from his jeans. Jacking off wouldn’t make him feel better. Using his dildo wouldn’t work, either. He needed the touch of the man he crushed on to make everything level again. Except, he’d just caused Nat to leave him alone.
Syd wrapped his fingers around his cock and stroked. Just like downstairs, he wouldn’t need much in order to come. He stretched one leg out on the bed and draped the other leg over the side. He planted his foot on the floor.
As he jerked himself off, he pictured Nat with him. Nat knelt on the bed between Syd’s knees. Fire blazed in his eyes and his cheeks were stained red. His blond hair stuck up in odd tangles.
“Love watching you do that,” Nat said in the fantasy. “It’s sexy when you jerk off.”
“Love when you watch me,” Syd murmured. He closed his eyes and arched his back. With one hand on his dick, he used his other hand to stroke his balls. The fever in his veins engulfed him. He couldn’t think straight. The only thing that mattered was finding release. He puffed and grunted.
“I want to see you come. All over me, Syd. Decorate me.” Nat, now nude, perched between Syd’s knees. He plucked his nipple and licked his lips. “Come on.”
Syd nodded.  His breaths turned ragged, and his mind fuzzed. The orgasm built low in his body and spread throughout his groin. He parted his lips. “Nat. Fucking hell, I’m coming.” Something deep within him snapped, and he sagged against the bed. A rope of cum stretched across his belly, staining his shirt. The warmth seeped through to his skin. He panted, and when he opened his eyes, the room spun. Damn.
“Syd?” Nat raced into the bedroom and stopped. “I thought I heard my name…” He didn’t finish his sentence.

Syd tipped his head. He knew Nat was in the room, but anything he wanted to say was gone. He’d been found out. Well, shit.
