Shifter ~ One Who, or That Which, Shifts or Changes

SHIFTER
One who, or that which, shifts or changes

Post by author Jessica E. Subject

When I was young, there were very few examples of shifters in mainstream media, the most common being werewolves and vampires. Some were aliens, too, but all were rarely portrayed as the love interest. Most of the time they were the antagonist, reigning terror on small towns and big cities alike.

Over time, paranormal creatures and aliens became the sidekick, the co-worker or friend, and eventually the love interest. With that progression, the range of common shifters increased until any living thing could turn out to be a shifter. Even inanimate object if alien shifters who can transform into anything are included.

My first shifter romance included an alien shifter in the short story, ALIEN LOVER. Now I have multiple animal/human shifters in my series, SHIFTER TOWERS. This series includes tigers, bunnies, bears, mink, jaguars, dragonflies, pika, and leopard cats, with my upcoming release starring a fox shifter.

Tell me, what's your favorite type of shifter to read about? What type of shifter have you not seen but would love to read about?

Fresh out of a messy breakup, omega fox shifter, Foxx, needs a job. His ex/former business partner has spread many lies about him around town and to his former clients, so he heads to Saramto in desperation. He doesn’t expect his smartphone to send him into the wrong building of Shifter Towers for his interview at a coding school, to get stuck in an elevator with a hulky bear shifter, or for his heat to start in the middle of it all.

In between clients, personal trainer, and alpha bear shifter, Slade, heads up to his lawyer’s office to sign the paperwork for the house he just bought. He’s hoping this next life stage will get his parents to ease up on their constant pleading for him to settle down. He has no need for a mate. So, he doesn’t expect to come face-to-face with the fox shifter who his bear claims is his fated mate, or to be trapped in an elevator with the young man during the beginning of his heat.

Fox Trapped is the seventh book in Jessica E. Subject’s sweet with knotty heat Shifter Towers series. Fox Trapped is a MM MPreg Shifter Romance that features a fox shifter trying to start over after the end of his marriage to a despicable non-shifter, a bear shifter not looking to settle down no matter how many times his parents encourage him to, multiple tech snaffus, and fate stepping in to bring these two together. The short story ~ Something to read when you don't have a lot of time ~ Post by Jessica E. Subject #FreeRead #ReadAnEbookWeek

"A short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage. A short story is a photograph; a novel is a film." ~Lorrie Moore

"My short stories are like soft shadows I have set out in the world, faint footprints I have left. I remember exactly where I set down each and every one of them, and how I felt when I did. Short stories are like guideposts to my heart…" ~Haruki Murakami

THE SHORT STORY

A short story is much shorter than a novel, generally deals with only a handful of characters, and consists of one main story arch. They are perfect when you only have a brief amount of time to read, but want a complete story, or if you want the enjoyment of a happy ending before you go to bed, and don't want to be up all night reading. (Which I'm sure many of us have done.)

As an author, sometimes I find them easy to write, and other times, not so much. When I first started writing, they were a great way for me to learn story structure and development, as well as character development. It can be hard to convey an entire story in a limited amount of words.

Since today is the beginning of READ AN EBOOK WEEK (March 7-13, 2021), I have made a couple of my short stories available for FREE on Smashwords during this time. Check them out below!

ALIEN LOVER ~ Unconvinced of her fiancé’s demise, Molly combs the galaxy to search for him. As her supplies run low, she is forced to turn around and set a course for Earth, alone. But, a Moloxian Starcruiser halts her retreat, and the single passenger transports onto her ship without permission. Taser in hand to defend herself, she is startled as the form remolds into her fiancé. Has Diego found her or is her tired mind playing tricks?

CRASH LANDING ~ As his ship plummets toward Earth, Cael believes his life to be over. His last ditch effort to save himself ends in a fiery crash. When he wakes up, he believes he’s entered the afterlife, but his surroundings indicate otherwise. He made it to Earth. But who saved him, and what do they want with him?

THE POWER OF THREE ~ Cursed to live amongst several stone gargoyle statues, Oscar watches a young couple, yearning to participate in their sexual activities. For he has been away from his own lovers for over a year, and longs to touch and be touched again.

When he tumbles off the headboard onto the couple, he is released from the statue but must find a way home. His only thought: a ménage with the man and woman who freed him. But will they try something new to grant him his return passage, or leave him wandering Earth alone?

Whether you enjoy your stories short. long, or a mixture of them all, I wish you...
HAPPY READING TIME!

Happy Paranormal New Release Birthday! By Nancy Gideon

Planning and hosting a birthday party is exhausting work. Once an agreeable to all involved date is set (and don't get me started on the timing logistics of that!), there's the budgeting, the scouting location sites, the enlisting of trusted helpers, the guest list, party food and favors, the entertainment suitable for all in attendance. The invites go out and you think you'll get a breather, but then whatever can go wrong, usually does. Plans fall through, attendees cancel, and the birthday boy is giving you fits of moody temper and threatens not to show up for his own party. But the Gods of Celebration smile. Miraculously, everything falls into place at the last possible second and all goes off as if that squeaking, clog-slipping machine was well-oiled all along. Everybody parties . . . except the hostess who is still busy scrambling, checking, rechecking to make sure everything is in place, that everyone is enjoying themselves and that the guest of honor is behaving. When all is said and done, the drained and cranky hostess vows "Never again." At least until the next time.

I wish I could say the release of PRINCE OF FOOLS went flawlessly, but all things considered, and some best laid plans abandoned, it was survived with a lesser degree of panic and hair pulling than usual thanks to my posse of behind the scenes helpers and my relentless OCD. PRINCE OF FOOLS, my 64th book (not counting re-releases!) is out in ALL venues for purchase, and though it's still too early to take off my party shoes and put my feet up, at least I can breathe a sigh of relief.

A dark prince to her Cinderella barmaid . . .

Rico . . . Prince in the shapeshifter House of Terriot

Reckless, hotheaded Rico Terriot seeks purpose and a sense of pride training the resentful guardians of New Orleans to defend a city besieged by a deadly outside force. Torn between his desire for his brother’s mate and the woman tied to the child of another, protecting their future happiness means denying his own on a dangerous path to redemption.

One night of stolen pleasure he didn’t remember and she couldn’t forget…

Amber . . . a single mother hiding a terrible past

Rico Terriot was the stuff of dreams . . . lately all of hers. But there’s no happily-ever-after for someone living in the shadows, protecting dangerous secrets that threaten her and her daughter. Dare she believe in a fairytale prince when he comes to her rescue, not knowing the price he’ll pay for making her troubles his own? From world’s so far apart, is love strong enough to hold them together . . . and keep them alive?
“5 Captivating Stars (or Hearts)! A stunningly raw, heart racing story that held me in a trance from cover to cover! Intense and seductive paranormal romance/suspense at its best – PRINCE OF FOOLS is another Page Burning, Must Read by an author that delivers every single time!” – Cross My Heart Reviews
Any tips to share on avoiding (or at least reducing) those last minute issues that always seem to crop up? Any Release Day horror stories to tell?

I'll be letting my hair down tonight with Bewitching Book Tours Halloween Spooktacular Facebook Party between 8-9 EST. Drop by to say "Hey!" and maybe win a prize!

Happy Halloween!

Rhythm of the Night: Creating a Playlist

by Nancy Gideon

I'm often asked if I write while listening to music. The answer, no. But that said, music is an integral part of my writing process. Each book has its own rhythm, its own beat that throbs like the heart of each character. The minute I start imagining scenes, a soundtrack starts to develop based on the backgrounds and emotions I intend to develop and refine. Those levels of conflict, of heat or social strata trickle down into a tempo that threads through the chapters, influencing what's playing in my 6-disk changer as I drive to work thinking up dialog or pull off iTunes.

My "House of Terriot" shape-shifter series has a rough and rocky backbeat driving my bad boy princes. Cale, their new king's is hard and heavy (Imagine drivers in the next car glancing over to see this old gal head banging to German metal and Rob Zombie!). Turow, the quiet, dutiful brother in PRINCE OF HONOR is a mellow 60's kind of guy, Colin, the heartbreaker in PRINCE OF POWER, my new release, is lost in the '70s and '80s of classic rock, and hot-headed Rico, in PRINCE OF FOOLS, my W-I-P is hip-hop. What's left for Kip, in PRINCE OF DREAMS? Show tunes?

Beyond the type of tunes, there's the message that resonates in the heart and soul of what the characters are dealing with, past, present and potential future, lyrics that speak of their personal journey, longings and fears. That "take a knife all edgy and dull and cut a six inch valley through the middle of my soul" The Boss sings about. These are universal melodies that bridge classifications from Pop to Soul.

Putting together a playlist is like laying out the plotline of the book, with arcs and dark valleys, sweet dreams and fierce dramas. Colin and Mia's journey in PRINCE OF POWER comes with a wealth of my old rock favorites that I used to spin on the stereo when I had big hair, mixed with modern hits plucked from Sirius Satellite that speak of his demons and desires, of the volatile love triangle between an enemy and two brothers, and the fragile nature of love. Take the playlist for a spin and feel the heartbeat of the story.

Obsessed with an enemy - the only female to ever walk away from him . . .

Colin . . . Prince in the House of Terriot

Brawny, cynical negotiator for his clan, Colin Terriot sees a move to New Orleans as an escape from a painful past and his reputation as a legendary lover. What he didn't expect was to fall hard for a rival spy, the female who tricked and betrayed him by leaving his bed for his brother's. Now, he now must work with her, up close and personal, as the envoy for her clan. Things are about to heat up.

Determined to have him - even if having him means losing all . . .

Mia . . . Strong-willed Guedry heir

Denied her rightful legacy, Mia Guedry plans to stake her claim over the bodies of those who killed her family. But best laid plans fall before her desire for the one male she can't resist, the one who will never trust her once burned by her necessary deceptions. Saving her Terriot prince from plans already in motion may cost more than her inheritance . . . the price could be her life.

“Hold onto your heart (& your panties, ladies!) . . . the Terriot princes are back! Things are heating up in New Orleans in this powerful story of obsession, betrayal and revenge. Intricately woven plot lines and complex characters carry PRINCE OF POWER to a block buster revelation in another Page Burning Must Read! Five Hearts!” – Cross My Heart Reviews

Living In a Traditional World (and a SALE!)

by Nancy Gideon

In keeping with tradition - that of Black Friday without having to fight the crowds! - two of my "By Moonlight" and the first of my "House of Terriot" books are discounted by 25% for today only at All Romance E-Books! Sink your teeth into REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT and UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS, which are the cross-over books between the two series that combine the worlds and the characters, and take a bite out of the brand new "House of Terriot" with PRINCE OF HONOR, Book 1.

All Romance eBooks

Two of our biggest traditions in the U.S. are Thanksgiving and Black Friday. By steeping your paranormal story/series in its own customs is one of the best ways to make it unique and other-worldly, as other members of PNR have been discussing this month.

In my "By Moonlight" shape-shifter series, I wanted to establish a separateness from the norm for my characters who live under the radar in New Orleans, Lake Tahoe, and Memphis. Though they pass for human and many work regular jobs, on the police force, tending bar, and in clinics, when they get together to "howl," the differences shine through. The speed and power in their movements, the fiery gleam in their eyes, the ability to go all "fang and fur" when provoked. They recognize one another by a scent "signature" and from the "glimmer" of sensations they project. They release the spirits of their dead through fire ceremonies and claim their exclusive mates by bonding that allows the pair special intuitive powers. Even amongst themselves, different clans follow different ways, some ultra-modern, some feudal, and some a melting pot of tarnished beliefs held onto from ancient times. Some even follow human customs such as marriage. Picking the right alliance or the right fight is all that keeps the tentative balance of power between them.

The Terriot clan is ruled by a mad king with his twelve princely sons fighting for his crown through bonding, treachery, and even magic. In my new "House of Terriot" four book spin-off series, their king has been overthrown and the head of their new leader isn't resting easy as he and his brothers try to negotiate a truce with other clans to defend against a greater force in the North while maintaining the balance on their own isolated mountaintop. The four princes featured in the H.o.T. series have found love in unacceptable places - with a traitor, within a rival clan heir, with a female of mystery, and with one of tremendous hidden potential, all who challenge the expected ways of their family, breaking down those traditional barriers. And that's half the fun!

I'm recovering from yesterday's turkey dinner (and hiding from shopping!) over the first edit of PRINCE OF POWER, Book 2 in the "House of Terriot" series, to make room for holiday dinner #2 tomorrow with more of the family. Traditions - gotta love 'em - especially the tasty ones! Hope yours have been wonderful!

Branching Out

Next Tuesday, my first foray into strictly m/f romance, The Lost Coast, will be released. It's a gothic romance in a contemporary setting, both novel things for me. The only element that carries over from my previous body of work is the paranormal (although a tiny bit of BDSM did sneak in there). I'd originally planned to set the story in a non-magical world, but as I started writing, I soon discovered the characters had secret lives and histories rooted in magic.

My favorite thing about this book, though, isn't the paranormal twist (though I certainly enjoyed writing that part). It's the gothic. I grew up on gothic romance, hiding under the covers with a flashlight at night to read Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, and Phyllis A. Whitney.  I tried to stay true to those influences while giving the story a more modern edge.

The other thing that's a little different about this story is the heroine. Millie is an orphan who grew up in foster care after being badly burned and abandoned as an infant. Although the cover doesn't show it, Millie has burn scars covering the right side of her face and down the right side of her body. I wanted the cover to reflect that, but the design work required would have been too pricey.

I hope readers will be able to see Millie as a three-dimensional person instead of a conventionally beautiful romance heroine with flawless features. Millie is beautiful, but she doesn't fit what society tells us that word should mean.

But aside from not judging a book by its cover, I hope people will enjoy a little something different from me, especially those who love the old gothic romance tradition.

Some histories should stay lost. Especially those written in blood.

The only things Millie Lang’s mother gave her were third-degree burns, and a name Millie refuses to use. Abandoned as an infant, Millie grew up as “the girl with the scars”, shunted from one foster family to the next.

Before she met Lukas Strand, she’d never understood what “home” meant. Then Lukas disappeared without a word. Eight years later, Millie is secure in the life she’s built as a physical therapist. Until she gets a letter from a mysterious stranger who knows her real name.

From the moment she arrives at the sprawling vineyard manor on California’s Lost Coast to work with the owner’s young son, she begins to doubt her secret benefactor’s motives. The vineyard is known as The Strand—and Lukas is her patient’s father.

As Millie delves into the tangled threads of their family histories, she realizes the fire that scarred her may not have been an accident—and Lukas’s son is in danger. Unless she survives long enough to unearth the key to some very uncomfortable truths…

Warning: Contains a vineyard owner whose family tree may not have the ideal number of branches, and a woman who is about to discover the magic hidden in her own DNA. May cause unsettling feelings of creeping anxiety and a sudden urge to make bad puns about wood.

The Lost Coast is available for pre-order now (and for purchase on December 15) from the following vendors:

Confessions of an Indie Virgin . . .

I’m approaching the release of my first self-published book. (October 13! Mark your calendar!) After 25 plus years in the business, I didn’t think there were many ‘firsts’ left! I’ve survived the first rejection, first CALL, first publisher revisions, first book signing, first data processor, first press interview, first computer, first Editor from Hell, first collapse of the mid-list (and second!), first death of the paranormal romance (and second!), first foray into social media, first career resurrection (and second), first e-book, first return of rights and reissues . . . the list goes on and on. But something about this first step into Indie waters has me unusually anxious (well, usually I’m anxious about everything, but this time, more so!). I guess I was afraid I was just too old to learn new and scary tricks.

But then I looked around and saw I was not alone. As writers, we are first and foremost survivors. And to survive, we adapt. We may not like it, but we do it. And when we do it, hey, we just might like it.

I’m a control freak (yes, sadly it’s true!). I love to oversee every little nook and comma of my career, and Indie pubbing just might be my new love. Where the degree of author input varies within the big houses in NY, when you’re at the helm of your Indie ship, you’re the captain. You’re in charge of what fills your sails and what stars you follow. And of who crews for you (more on that in later posts!).

REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT, the 9th book in my “By Moonlight” series and first to be piloted by my hand, will debut on October 13, 2014. If those who’ve ventured upon those uncharted waters have any advice that will lead to smoother sailing, it would be greatly appreciated!

Here’s a peek at REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT:

Because the road to . . .

Clever, cool and preternaturally lethal, Max Savoie is leader of a secretive shape-shifter clan, heir to a mobster’s legacy, and the love of New Orleans’ top cop . . . but he can’t remember any of them. The only way to recover his past, and his rightful place in the arms of the woman who risked all to save him, is to surrender to a mysterious visitor who could use him as a weapon against all he’d loved.

Happily-Ever-After . . .

After rescuing her mate from his ruthless captors in the north, hard-hitting Detective Charlotte Caissie is now painfully vulnerable—a stranger in his eyes . . . and in their bed. The key to his memories is locked in a tortuous past. To reclaim the strength of their passionate bond, Max must learn to trust her enough to face that darkness at her side before the threat it hides exposes the secret Cee Cee carries.

Is never smooth.

When an investigation into grisly deaths in an underground Shifter fight club points to more than just dangerous clan rivalries, Cee Cee enlists Max’s help to find a traitor in their midst while there’s still time to turn a deadly invading tide. But the cost of saving their treasured future may mean sacrificing his past. Especially when the enemy they pursue . . . might be Max, himself.

Suffer the Hunger

Have you ever been so hungry that it was the only thing that occupied your mind?

It's one of our primal drives.

We all have to eat.

What if you didn't just need food to survive? What lengths would you go to live and how would you live with yourself afterwards? These are questions that Pia Blyton suffers through in Ravenous.

Suffer the hunger.

Pia Blyton wants it all. A steady boyfriend, love and her independence. But to ignore her succubus nature is to welcome chaos. Every three days she must orgasm to feed. Bad sex isn’t an option. Stave off the hunger for too long and her demon side peeks out, and its tastes are much less discerning than hers.

One bad day, one wrong decision, and her demon takes control of her libido and kisses all her best intentions goodbye.

Brokenhearted and ashamed, Pia is dragged home to Lake City by Zur-Sin, a vampire her father paid to find her. Caught in a world where mortal desires are seen as a weakness, Pia needs to figure out how to protect her heart from her deepest longings.

EXCERPT

Day seven of my cycle

Cold iron bit into my wrists when I rolled on my side and turned my back toward the door. The insistent knocking drilled into my aching head. I stifled a moan. If I stayed real quiet maybe they’d leave, thinking the motel room was empty. From the searing pain in my abdomen and the weakening demands of my inner demon, I only had a few hours left to live.
The crack of wood splintering replaced the pounding. I jerked at the sharp noise and twisted around. Hanging on the hinges, my door had smashed open. Someone flicked the switch on and the lights burned my sensitive eyes. I tried to shield my face with my hand but the chains holding the manacles around my wrists clanked and held my arm inches from the mattress.
“No.” I yelled. “Get out!” My chains rattled as I lunged at them. They snapped me back against the mattress and my head flopped on the pillow as a surge of sexual frustration flooded my system. My demon nature had quieted to a dull roar since yesterday but the scent of males had awoken the beast. It roared inside my head and clawed to retake control of my body. “Yes, stay,” it whispered.
Two people strode into the room. Light haloed around them so I couldn’t make any details. “Close the door, Cooper.” The shorter one knelt by my bed. “You look terrible for a succubus.”
I blinked my eyes until I could focus, and cleared my throat. “Get the fuck out.” I just wanted to die and take my demon with me.
The young man tilted his head to the side as if confused. Blond with blue eyes the same shade as a tropical sea, he didn’t look much older than nineteen. “I’m here to rescue you, sweetheart.” He caressed my cheek and all thoughts of saving him stopped on a dime.
I leaned into his touch and purred. “Yes, let me go.” My demon fought me for control.
He jumped to his feet and stepped back, his gaze caressing my body as if trying to decide where to start undressing me. “Fuck.”
I’d seen human males react to me this way. The hungrier I grew, the more they would want me. Neither of us could control that reaction. My body would pump fuck-me pheromones in the air until it was fed.
The second man came into my view, a little taller than the blond, with tawny hair down to his muscled shoulders. His thread bare t-shirt and faded jeans clung to all the right places. “What’s wrong?”
“Look at her body. She’s emaciated. Someone left her here to starve.” He watched me as I struggled against my chains.
I could only sit in the back of my head and scream in silence. What I called my demon nature was really a survival instinct. It grew more powerful when I got too hungry. I’d find myself humping some schmuck behind a Dumpster if I didn’t feed every three days. This was day seven.
I shuddered. This drive to orgasm was what ruined my life. All I ever wanted was to be loved. Why could every other creature have it but my kind?
The blond searched the bathroom, the closet and under my bed. “I don’t think it’s a trap. If it was, they would have set her loose on us by now.”
“A trap?” Tawny, gorgeous Cooper retreated to the door. “You said we were here to help her.” He readjusted the crotch of his tight jeans. His gaze wandered back to me and he swallowed hard.
“We are, but I wasn’t expecting this. Her father said she’d run away but this looks more like a kidnapping.”
“Well, unchain her and let’s go.”
The blond grew still and glared at Cooper. Suddenly, he didn’t seem nineteen anymore and the power radiating off him sent my supernatural Richter scale off the chart. So, not human, which explained how he knew my father.
Cooper shrank against the door, his gaze pinned to the cheap carpeting. “Sorry.”
“Sorry, what?”
“Sorry, master.” His voice shook.
“Use your fucking nose and see if you can pick up the scent of whoever chained her to the bed.” The master ran a finger along the sole of my foot.
I rolled my hips, inviting him to take off the yoga pants. I wanted his hands on my skin, not teasing my feet. No, no touching, no feeling. I clawed at the demon. I wouldn’t lose this time.
Cooper had walked around the room sniffing at random areas. “It’s hard to pinpoint scents in motel rooms, Zur-Sin. There’s too much traffic, but hers are the freshest and I don’t pick up anything else as new.”
That name snapped both me and my demon out of our horny trance. Oh, shit. I’d heard of him. If the devil was a rock star, Zur-Sin was his lead guitarist.
“Look at her.” There was a touch of awe in Zur-Sin’s voice. “Starved and in desperate need of a shower, yet she’s got me eager enough to cum in my pants like I was fifteen all over again.” He glanced at his erection, then at Cooper’s. “You too. Now that’s power.” He pulled out his phone and took a picture of me. “See? I’m even sending proof to Flynn.”
“No!” I cried out. Fear of hurting my father somehow trumped my demon for a second and gained control again.

“Oops, too late.” He shook his head. “What am I going to do with you, Pia?”

My first shifter love...

My first shifter love…

Everyone remembers their first love and I have to share mine – it happened when I went into a bookstore decades ago and tripped over a nice little paperback with a grey horse on the front, rearing up and daring me to pluck it off the shelf and take a look.

I'm talking about "The Grey Horse" by R.A McAvoy , of course.

Here's the official blurb from Amazon:

Set against the colorful and magical backdrop of Ireland, The Grey Horse chronicles a time when the Irish people suffered under harsh English overlords who sought to destroy their culture and way of life. Into the Irish town of Carraroe, a magnificent, completely grey stallion appears. The horse brings with him the promise of better times and magical happenings, for he is actually the shape-shifted form of Ruairi MacEibhir, journeyed to such a time of danger in order to win the hand of the woman he loves.

I know the blurb sounds pretty lame but at the time it was my first entrance into the magical world of Irish lore and of shifters—and of a sweet love.

Ruairi has come to town to woo a woman who isn't impressed with his shape-shifting skills or the revelation that Ruairi is a puca, a fairy pony. But he's determined to stay the course even if it means being baptized, an event that has to be read to be believed. Add in the usual problems of young love, a village wondering about their new resident and you've got a great story.

I wore out two copies of this paperback because of the flowing words and the beauty of the simple love story. Or should I say, love stories. Because in the middle of Ruairi's courting there's a lovely secondary plot with an older couple who are responsible for Ruairi's cover story and show a simple love that's lasted through time. It was one of the first time I'd seen seniors depicted as not only having a love life and I can say without doubt I think they'll stay with you long after you finish reading the book.

One of the things that I enjoyed, in retrospect, was that Ruairi's magic skill wasn't all that great. He could shift into a horse and do some basic other tricks but he wasn't a wizard nor did he have wild abilities either as a horse or a human. In fact he has a slew of peculiar thoughts and misunderstandings about humans which makes his wooing even more funny. He's not overpowering and more than a little naïve in the ways of humans but isn't afraid to step up when he's needed to right wrongs as he sees them.

This book was written in 1987 and is just as good a read now as it was then and is now available in ebook form. If you're looking for a sweet shifter love story I'd recommend it highly!

So there you go—my first shifter love. Why not tell me who yours was?

A Taste of What's to Come

2012 will be a very exciting year for me! Sometimes we work so hard for our dream that once we attain it's hard to sit back and enjoy the ride. Like every writer, I've had my times of struggle where the words were lacking or the story flat. But today, I'm not focusing on the bad. I want to think about the good and take a moment just absorb what the next year will be like.

Book Four of The Vanguards

Small Excerpt:
Leaping after Katrina, Tyler was intercepted midair. He hit the pavement with a bone-crunching impact. Air rushed out of his lungs while stars whirled around his head, yet he still managed to roll from the attack. He might not train like Eric, his alpha, or Robert, his beta, but Katrina had forced him to learn the basics of keeping his hide intact.

He jumped to his feet and faced his opponent. The dark, cold eyes of the unknown Asian male stared back from the face of the beast who’d attacked him. His companions had shifted, too.

Impending death confronted Tyler. Three shifters against one were terrible odds, especially for a shifter who worked as a real estate agent.

Werewolves believe in soul mates. Sirens eat theirs.

Sirens, a mutation of mermaids, need sexual energy to survive. Marie Laframboise lost her only food source when her strip club burned down. Not wanting to kill any of her victims, she’d learned to glean the lust off her clients, and now she is starving. She can’t resist the temptation to invite herself to the singles shifter party held by local werewolf stud, Maxwell Cox, and feed.

Max doesn’t want a soul mate, but to his dismay, she shows up at his party. Just as Marie can’t resist the temptation to feed, Max can’t resist the instinctual urge to claim her. Marie has never wanted a relationship, but she can’t shake off Max’s pursuit. He offers her things she has only dreamed of, but she fears the hunger will turn those dreams into nightmares.

Her appetite is not one to mess with. Max thinks he’s found the perfect mate, but Marie may have found the perfect prey.

Graphic sexual content, hot shifters, and one scary-ass siren.

Excerpt:
Sighing, Max settled his head into his hands. “I never wanted a mate, Chad. Now, I’m shackled to this stranger.” He glared at Chad. “Who left me in the middle of the night without giving me her name. Part of me is glad she’s gone, and the other half is insulted as hell that she dumped me.”
Chad folded his arms over his light blue t-shirt with a surfing logo on it, a spitting image of his father, Max’s best friend. “You’re screwed.”
Max stared daggers at him.
“Was it fuck-at-first sight? Is that how you lost your clothes?”
Growling, the older werewolf grabbed and lifted the cub by the front of his shirt and tossed him in the pool. The weight almost strained Max’s shoulder. He needed to stop thinking of Chad like a cub. On his last birthday, he’d turned twenty. God, that made Max around forty. He’d stopped counting awhile back.
Chad splashed to the surface and laughed, then he pulled himself out of the water. “I take that as a ‘yes.’ Nice to know some people don’t get wiser with age.”
“Rub it in when I’m down.” Max sat in the chair, at ease with being nude.
“What’s wrong with her?”
“I don’t know. She’s beautiful and…” Knows how to fuck. He shook his head to clear it. “Why does the animal side of us chose who we spend our life with? I don’t know her. Maybe she likes all the stuff I hate. Am I supposed to change for her?”
“Of course not. You’ll see, she’ll come back.”
“Come back? You don’t know much about women, do you?” Max shook his head. If she left without so much as a kiss goodbye then something was up that he wouldn’t like. “She didn’t act like a shifter. Just dragged me into a secluded spot, stripped, and gave me the best damn blow job.” He’d never begged before last night, and didn’t like that he’d have given her anything to continue if she’d stopped. Yet…his beast had loved it.
“Sounds like she’s a great match for you. Maybe you should give her a chance then freak out if you don’t like her.”
“Yeah.” That was his fear. What if he ended up more than liking her? She’d be better off without him. His beast half didn’t agree and struggled for dominance of their body. Max controlled his animal instincts and gazed at the red material still clutched in his hand. Her scent clung to it, sweet and heady. “How good are you at tracking smells?” The beast would never leave him alone if he didn’t even try finding her, although for her sake, he hoped she stayed lost.
“Like a hound? Not as good as Dad but okay.” Chad stood at the pool’s edge and approached. “What do you have in mind?”
“A hunt.” He tossed the bikini bottoms to the younger werewolf then released his struggling beast and gave it the reins to their fate. Power coursed through his body until the animal he harbored grew out of him. Bones snapped, muscles reshaped, and brown fur bloomed from his skin to cover the bipedal werewolf standing where Max used to be.
He swung around and watched Chad’s transformation end with the elongation of his muzzle.
They inhaled the scent from the cloth then raced to the woods. Both males possessed enough alpha traits that competition came naturally between them.
The younger werewolf reached the forest first, but the more experienced one knew how to find the trail faster. Unable to communicate with words, Max howled as his mate’s scent grew stronger. Crashing through the undergrowth, he followed with his nose to the ground until he reached the edge of the water. He snorted the sand from his nostrils.
She’d gone swimming in the lake? Maybe she’d wanted to wash after sex, although it also ended his trail.
Chad arrived, his chest billowing as he followed the same trail to the water. His beast’s form melted back to a human. “What now?”
Copying the cub’s action, Max changed back to a man. “I’ll head north and you south. She exited somewhere along the shore. Maybe we’ll pick up the trail again.”
“Meet back here in an hour?”
Max grimaced at the excited hunter. He might look like his father, but he acted like him. “If you find her, don’t forget she’s mine. Let the hunt begin.”
