Novels, Novellas, Shorts and Flash.
I've seen so many glowing reviews by readers lately that go on and on about how much they like a story and then mark it down because it was too short. I felt it was necessary to clarify a few things about the differences between the four different lengths, and what the reader can and should reasonably expect from them.
When you’re out there browsing for reads for your E-Readers you may come across these terms used to describe novels, and it really depends on what you’re looking for as to what you should get. Not all of these stories are the same. Actually they're quite different in they way they are put together.
What do I mean?
A Novel is a fully developed book. It has a beginning, middle and end. It should have anywhere from 200 pages or more, and around 50k words minimum, and some even say that isn't enough. There is a main plot, often secondary plot threads and the details of the world are very specific. In romance you will find a hero and heroine, heroine and heroine, hero and hero or ménage in any combination, and often a larger cast of characters—including secondary characters like villains, that may be as developed as your hero and heroine. This isn’t a quick read. The scenery is very descriptive, the author goes into great detail building a world and showing you how it works. Secondary plot threads run deep and often converge with the main plot thread, sometimes more than once during the story. These secondary plot threads are necessary for the story to make sense, and often carry a lot of the weight of the plot. There are usually no loose ends, unless it’s a series and it ties into the next book. If there's a gun on the mantle in scene one, it better go off in the book.
A Novella is also fully developed with a beginning middle and end, however, you will usually only find one plot, and it’s a half-size to your novel. Often in romance there are two characters who are fully developed (sometimes three in erotic), and they may or may not have secondary characters, but they certainly are not as developed as the primary. These stories can run from 50 pages up to 150, sometimes a bit more. The scenery and world building are not usually as descriptive as a novel, and the focus tends to be more on the characters and their dilemma than on what their world looks and is, like. If secondary plot threads are explored, they do not run as deep and they are not central to the outcome or plot and they are not always tied up in the end. They do not carry any weight of the plot and are not required for the story to make sense, but they do add interesting details. A novella simply cannot go into the detail a novel can. If you want broad, sweeping history and detail, a novella is not for you. If you want fast-paced action, a character focused read that may take you an hour or two to read, instead of days, you may be interested in Novellas. Novellas are often parts of anthologies and a publisher series. If there's a gun on the mantle in scene one, it might go off in the book.
A Short. Usually one scene—maybe two. A good lunch-break story that can most likely be finished within an hour. Shorts are to the point. In romance they involve the main characters and a situation that may or may not be solved by the end of the story. Scenery is often omitted and the focus again is on the main characters and the situation in that specific scene. I’ve seen shorts that even forgo the description of the hero and let the heroine’s reaction of him give the reader an idea of what he looks like. These often run 1k up to 5k and are roughly up to 25 pages. A gun on the mantle in scene one is a waste of precious word count.
Flash. One scene under 1k. It amounts to a few paragraphs. No scenery, this snippet is often a jab on the emotions. It takes its punch, makes a point and it’s done. The individual scenes may not even be complete. These quickies are often used to promote a novel or novella in the same world. Flash means just that, a flash. Bang--the gun just went off and you might not know why.
I hope you find these helpful for when you're shopping for your reads and reviewing stories. Keep in mind authors are limited to word count and can only include content that is central to the story--if allowed, and it depends on the size of the story as to how deep they can go into the world. If you are reviewing a novella or short, please think twice about marking that story down because it wasn't long enough, or detailed enough. If you go back and look at the way it was put together, you may discover the author is a master of writing shorts, that every word, every scene, was carefully selected to give you as deep a read as they could in the limited word count they were allowed. Shorts and novellas can be as challenging for an author to pen as a full novel. They truly are different beasts and should be treated as such when reviewed.
Thanks to all for stopping by.
Have a great weekend,

It's Friday
It was with immense interest (satisfaction!) that I opened this link when I saw it on my Yahoo page.
Eric Pfeiffer's first line tickled me to death. You know my mind when it comes to animals, and I could just hear the dog in my head.
"No. No more, dude." The man grinned, even turned his back to him. Scratching behind his floppy ears, Fido wondered why he should help Hunter. The ducks had never done anything to him. In fact, he enjoyed a sunny day in the meadow chasing a couple birds he'd become familiar with. So, it had come to this. Reaching for the gun, Fido said, "How about I shoot you in your ass?" His supposed best friend still ignored him as he tied up the boat. That was the last straw. Picking up the 12-gauge shotgun, his paw itched to do what he had wanted to do for a long time. He thought about every late meal, every time he was left out in the cold and rain simply because he had to take a piss. It's my turn. BANG! "How's that shit feel?"
Well, it didn't quite go like that. You can read Pfeiffer's full story at The Sideshow news blog link above.
Here's another (unedited) storyline:
That's a snippet from my newly contracted short story: A Thirst to Die For. It'll be released soon by Razor's Edge Press. It's the sequel to Thirsty which is available now.
Happy Friday!

Dogs are man's best friend. Except, you know, when they're shooting a gun at you.

Here's another (unedited) storyline:
The sulfuric stench of fire and brimstone assaulted Nolan’s nostrils as he entered Omen’s. Smelled worse than hell itself. Destruction left in the wake of the devil’s eldest son, Bane, rivaled the putrid scent of burning flesh and fur. “Peris, shut her the fuck up.” Standing behind the bar, Monique’s sobs grew louder. Reading the woman’s mind, Nolan pieced together what transpired. $Shit. “Bane is banned from coming above.” Chairs scraped against the floor, tables banged loudly as they were turned right side up by Guyer, one of the toughest gargoyles alive who helped watch over the club in Nolan’s absence. Most creatures cut a wide berth around the giant bastard.
Anger flashed from Guy’s golden eyes as he pushed a barstool in Nolan’s direction. “Tell Bane that next time you see him.”
Killing any of the Devil’s children was out of the question, but Nolan could make them wish they were dead. He hated returning from Slayer duties to find chaos. Fatigue wrapped around him like a shroud and all he wanted to do was rest, have his cock sucked, and fuck somebody’s brains out. “I’ll handle it.”
Sweeping his arms in a circular motion, Nolan created a gaping black hole in the floor. Battered and bloody bodies, along with the lingering stench, were swiftly sucked into a violent vortex that led to the Devil’s doorstep. $I’m coming, Bane.$ Dark powers garnered long ago from Satan allowed Nolan to send his words laced in the debris straight to Hell. If there was even a drop of Bane’s sweat mixed with the ash hurtling headlong into the bowels of earth, it would search the motherfucker out.
The words would reach his ears wrapped in shiny black shards of ice.
Being a cold bastard had its perks.
That's a snippet from my newly contracted short story: A Thirst to Die For. It'll be released soon by Razor's Edge Press. It's the sequel to Thirsty which is available now.
Happy Friday!

When Sexytimes Aren't Sexy
I know a lot of readers compliment romance writers on their ability to write sexy sex scenes. But I have a confession. There is nothing as un-sexy as writing a sex scene. Don't get me wrong, the finished product is always thigh-clenching, pulse pounding, oh-my-God-that-was-sooooo-good. And there is an initial buzz when (at least for me) I craft up how I want a sex scene to go. However, getting to that point isn't easy.
I myself can read a particular sex scene in one of my books countless times before I ever turn in a book for consideration for submission. I pick apart every scene, dissecting it down to the last little nub just to make sure I have everything the book needs as a whole to work. This includes the sex scenes. Oddly enough, sometimes there's a lot of choreography involved in writing a sex scene. Not only do you have to make it sexy for the readers, but you have to make sure it's something physically possible. Writing "tab B into slot A" just ain't going to cut it. Well, I guess it can in some instances, but the majority of the time...nope.
Not to say I don't absolutely love what I do in any way shape or form. But reading something over and over and over, adding things here, taking things away that don't work sort of takes some of the ... afterglow away from writing sex. It's like watching your favorite movie back-to-back non-stop. Eventually it loses some of its luster.
Luckily, the finished product always shines--but it's always hard work getting there. *g*

Do you have Nightmares?
I used to have so many nightmares as a child, its amazing I ever slept at all. As an adult, I've taken the frightening and made them my heroes. Vampires. Werewolves. But dare I go a step further?
Now, I can watch almost any movie without issues except for movies about possessions. Now, I know there are writers out there making devils their heroes but so far I've not walked that line. Why? Not because I am religious or have any aversion to doing so but because I am afraid to even let myself think about it long enough to contemplate such an idea. I mean, have you seen Paranormal Activity?? AHHHH.
But in all seriousness, what frightens you?

Burnout
It’s time for me to take a break. Anyone sorta following me knows that I’ve been writing my little heart out and I broke my writing muscle.
I need a recess. It won’t happen though. I have edits and edits and more edits to do but I did take the about three days away from the computer this week. I thought I’d miss it more but not one bit. Even my addiction to writechat didn’t bother me.
I do plan on taking a longer break over Christmas but first these edits and I have to finish The Sigma, which is half done. (By the way, Sam is becoming my favorite hero).
All this leads to my current day dreaming about vacations. I’ve been dreaming about taking a long vacation somewhere warm. I have vacation time in August, which is low peak for many great destinations like Hawaii or Bahamas. I’m terrible about shopping the net for deals or researching resorts. I’m one of those ‘word of mouth’ people.
Someone mentioned Bermuda to me. I’m not crazy about Mexico. Anyone have a suggestion?
(I can dream.)

I was really honored when Decadent Publishing asked me to be a part of their holiday anthology. You can find it here to see the pretty cover and all the amazing stories inside.
On Friday, my story in the anthology, All She Wants For Christmas Is Her Dom, was released as a single title. It's a steamy read that's sure to warm you up on those cold winter nights.

Madame Eve’s 1NightStand service has brought together Blake and Taryn on a cold Christmas Eve at the Castillo Lodge. The two will set out on an adventure of pain and pleasure surrounded by Alaskan snow-capped mountains and nestled in a warm country lodge. But as the night develops, Taryn discovers it’s not Christmas presents that will surprise her but instead the very man who mastered her through a night of intense BDSM.
REVIEWS:
5 Stars – Bitten by Paranormal Romance
“No lollygagging around here as the story opens with a BDSM scene involving a flogger, a cane, and a mini vibe. Of course, you can expect a few ropes and anal sex to round things out. All of this kinky goodness is wrapped up in a contemporary romance that Ms. Kennedy delivers in excellence. Ms. Kennedy keeps upping the ante with her 1NS stories. They are like too many sweets for the brain and I want more!” Cynthia
5 Stars – Under the Covers reviews
“The saying goes: “Short, but sweet!” But that is not the motto Stacey Kennedy writes by.
All She Wants for Christmas is her Dom is sizzling hot! So much so that I’m actually a bit sad that the book was so short! But don’t be fooled by the shortness of this book, Kennedy really packs in the heat! All She Wants for Christmas is her Dom jumps right into the sexy BDSM. ” Ann
5 Stars – A Chick Who Reads
“Only Stacey Kennedy could write a story a little more than 20 pages long that can leave readers longing for a cold shower. All She Wants For Christmas Is Her Dom, is just that kind of story…short but not sweet, in fact it is so hot the pages sizzle from the heat of Taryn and her Dom. ” Andrea
EXCERPT:
The suite in the Castillo Lodge far exceeded Blake’s expectations. Rustic in appearance with log walls, hardwood panel floors, and the rich scent of evergreens filling the air, it was exactly what he requested and fit the mood for a Christmas getaway. The room delighted him, but the woman who stood before him enchanted him more.
He led the blindfolded Taryn over to the four-poster wooden bed with a quilt on top and placed her hands on the railing over the footboard. “I suggest you present yourself.” She bent over, spread her long, sexy legs, and angled her hips to expose her ass decorated by a thong. Her straight brown locks hung loosely down her back, covering the crimson lace bra that looked lovely against her pale skin. “Nicely done.”
Her chest rose and fell quickly. Nervous? The thought only lingered on his mind a moment—no one paired with him would hold anxieties. As a Dom, he demanded much of his submissives. He needed them to be strong and obedient. And Madame Eve, a matchmaker out of Las Vegas who had arranged the encounter, had been well aware of that fact. As he examined her more closely, he equated her reaction to being aroused, and relished the thought that his mere presence caused her reaction.
“I’m here to please you, Sir.”
The fire in the large stone fireplace on the far side of the large room cast a lovely glow over her skin. “Your desire to entice me is working.” He pressed his hard cock against the seam of her ass to declare she hadn’t been the only one affected. “I appreciate you addressing me with such respect, but for now, we can do without it. I’d advise, though, to use the term when you believe I want to hear it.” He rubbed himself against her and held back his groan. “Is my cock what you want?”
“I ache for you.”
He chuckled before he moved away and saw her stance falter. “That kind of pleasure you’ll have to earn.”
She proved she was a skilled submissive as she recovered her position without pause. “I want to earn it, Sir.”
He strode toward his bag on the floor by the stone fireplace and took out his flogger. She tensed as he flicked his hand to allow her to hear the sound of the tails whooshing through the air. “Do you have a safe word, my pet?”
“Marshal.”
He positioned himself behind her and trailed the flogger over her backside. “Explain why that word holds significance?” He smacked her ass with a hard hit to test her limits.
“I’m a U.S. Marshal in Texas.” She groaned. “Supervisory Deputy to be exact.”
He ran the flogger over her bottom again to tease her. “Is that why the submissive role appeals to you, because of the job you hold?”
“It feels wonderful to give up the control I carry in my day-to-day life.” She moaned as he issued another hit. “And I enjoy being punished.”
He’d already known she enjoyed pain play. Madame Eve had sent him an extensive list of her limits, but he preferred learning for himself where those limits were drawn. “How long have you lived the BDSM lifestyle?”
“Five years.” She squeaked as he delivered a hard hit on her back then let the tails of the flogger tickle down the sweet cheeks of her ass.
“But you haven’t had a lifestyle Dom?”
“I—” She paused. “I’d prefer not to discuss it.”
Unacceptable. He hit hard twice. She bowed her head and cringed. “I didn’t ask what you preferred. Answer the question.”
She breathed deep as he hit lightly along her thighs. “I did have someone, but not anymore.”
“Would he be jealous that I’m your Dom tonight?”
“I’d imagine he would be.” She gasped when he flogged her on the shoulders and continued down her back.
“I suppose then, I’ll need to leave my mark on you for all to see, so they’re well aware who you belong to now.”

The journey as a writer all began when I was a teen and wrote poetry, which still to this day I pull out to have a good laugh. Later on, I tried a couple of times to put a book together with no such luck. Couldn’t ever get past the first few chapters. But once I was exposed to the paranormal world, ideas came quickly.
At first, it was a way to keep my brain alive since being a stay at home mom can be a little let’s say―numbing. It was an escape from screaming kids, dirty diapers and plain old mom duty. It started as a hobby, but as the stories progressed it became a passion. Now, I indulge at nap time, especially the juicy bits! Every mom needs a good thrill!
So here in Kitchener, Ontario, I am a thirty one year old wife, mom, house cleaner, cook, teacher, play-doh extraordinaire, swing pusher, toddler chaser after – who loves the outdoors, curling up with the latest flick, and if I’m not plugging away at a new novel, I’ve got my nose buried deep in a good book. So there it is―my life!

Raw thirst dominated Lyle’s fantasy. Cracked ribs, battered leg, ankle bruised by the shackle, three broken fingers, deep slashes along inner thighs and bone jutting through muscle in the left arm—it all lay crushed under the need for water. Images of shimmering droplets danced behind his crusted eyelids.
How long did it take for a male in his prime to die?

“You’re kind of a smartass, aren’t ya? Well, Lady Marianne, I have my own business. I’m in sales.”
Great. He probably dealt drugs. I asked for Robin Hood, but what do I get? Robby from the Hood.
I am so getting a refund.

“Or what, Mr. Dominus, you’ll shove me in your trunk?”
Enjoying her humor, he teased, “Don’t tempt me.”
“I think I should warn you, threats, coupled with smiles don’t scare me.”
Micah laughed and she waved goodbye.

“Mads….” He whispered furiously, the sound of a door opening and clicking closed coming through on his end, loud and clear. “You didn’t call me at two a.m. to tell me nothing was wrong.”
Madison expelled a long, shaky breath. “I think we made a mistake tonight.”

“I’m going to peel your garment from your body, slowly”—she groaned again at the vivid imagery—“and taste every inch of your human flesh.”
Human flesh?
She froze against his body. What a strange thing to say.

This time Jess did move. She took a step forward and looked the officer directly in the eyes. “Sir, my husband is not dead. And if the Air Force is not taking every measure to find him, you can be sure I will shout it from the rooftops. Take it to every newspaper, radio, and television station in the damn country. You find my husband, and you find him now.”

Okay, if he wanted to role-play, she’d role-play. She lifted her finger and waggled it at him, smiling. “Oh, I get it. You’re in character.”
~Awaken the Demon~
“Why is it I get the strangest urge to rip those clothes from your body and see what's hidden beneath all that black?” She ran a finger along his lapel. “Yet, at the same time, I want to vomit at your feet.”
A huge thanks to all the authors for sharing a few of their favorite lines.
Have a great Saturday.

And if the Air Force is not taking every measure to find him, you can be sure I will shout it from the rooftops. Take it to every newspaper, radio, and television station in the damn country. You find my husband, and you find him now.”
~Seducing Liberty~
Okay, if he wanted to role-play, she’d role-play. She lifted her finger and waggled it at him, smiling. “Oh, I get it. You’re in character.”
~Awaken the Demon~
“Why is it I get the strangest urge to rip those clothes from your body and see what's hidden beneath all that black?” She ran a finger along his lapel. “Yet, at the same time, I want to vomit at your feet.”
A huge thanks to all the authors for sharing a few of their favorite lines.
Have a great Saturday.

Do You Love Madame Eve?

This year I was lucky enough to be invited to write a Christmas story for Madame Eve's 1Night Stand Holiday Anthology with Decadent Publishing. What was even more exciting for me is the other authors involved in this anthology too--Desiree Holt, Cerise Deland, Liia Ann White, DL Jackson, Stacey Kennedy, and Clarissa Yip. We all wrote a story that was included in anthology and then our individual stories are being released separately. If you're unfamiliar with Madame Eve's story, they are brief erotic romance short stories that tell the stories of one night that leads a couple to their happy ever after. It is a multi-authored world, meaning that each story tells a different story by a different author.
In my case, this time I wrote about Bethany and Lucas, who happens to be the Alpha of his wolf pack. Bethy is human. But, in I'll Be Mated For Christmas, Bethany can have everything she wants if only she will take it.
Check out the anthology and the whole series. There are a TON of fabulous authors writing this series.
I am 33 years old and the mom of 3 little boys. I am published with Liquid Silver Books, Noble Romance, Silver Publishing, Decadent Publishing, and Ellora's Cave. Please contact me at rebecca@rebeccaroyce.com

Week of ThanksGiving
I'm thankful for a lot of things this year and I will be expressing them on my own blog all this week BUT I had to post this here so my fellow Paranormal Romantics bloggers would see it.
PR started in June 2009. I organized it and ran it since then but my fellow authors have made the job very easy. I'm very thankful to work with these people. There are many group blogs that come and go but I'm very pleased that we continue to run without a hitch.
They blog EVERY week or find someone else to replace them. I don't think we've had one day go by without a new blog post in 2 1/2 years. That's roughly 912 articles.
I've never heard a complaint. :) When I ask for things, they respond quickly.
Thank you, Rebecca Royce, Hailey Edwards, Sara Brookes, J. Hali Steele, DL Jackson, and Stacey Kennedy.
Here's to our futures.
