“Excuse me? Can you tell me where the café is?” A woman slid her gaze over him as she stepped into his path. “Aren’t you delicious?”

He stopped short and stared at her. “I’m sorry. What?”

“Where is the café?” She grinned. “You’re quite handsome. Got a girlfriend?”

“Aren’t you forward?” He cleared his throat. “I don’t know where the café is. I’m new to town.”

“Are you?” Her eyes lit up. “Well, maybe we can investigate town together. We’re both new.”

“Uh…” He didn’t like this. He hated confrontation and being pushed. Then again, he wasn’t sure he wanted to be with this woman. He didn’t even know her name.

“There you are.” Another woman rushed up to him. Snakes curled on her head like a messy permanent, and she wore dark glasses. The slight green of her skin caught the light and shimmered. The tight tank top barely contained her curves. “Honey, I told you to stay close. But you never listen. Excuse us.”

Stay close? Huh? The women were so pushy in this town.

The snake woman threaded her arms around his biceps. “We should go. See you around, Lucy.”

“Sorry.” He allowed the new woman to drag him away. “Who are you?”

“Me?” She tugged him to the other end of the park, away from the playground. “I’m saving your ass.”

99 Cent Sale: Shadow of the Eclipse by L. A. Kelley

Shadow of the Eclipse

99 Cents until October 4

The past is written, but the future is an open door.

Excitement brews in Crossroads for everyone but lawyer, Callum MacGregor. This year, the town harvest festival coincides with a total eclipse. With a recent breakup, Cal has no desire to attend until a visit from his old law partner, Isaac Bingham, drops a bombshell. Twenty years before Cal’s birth, his grandfather, Phillip Bingham, extracted a promise. Isaac must get Cal to the harvest festival or the world would face unparalleled disaster.

Cal is stunned. How could a long dead man know Cal would be born and live in Crossroads? Why this nonsensical warning? The mystery deepens when Isaac tells him he’s not the only one to receive a mysterious summons.

Accountant Meg Adler’s day started badly when her boss fired her for refusing to cook the books, but then a letter arrives from a man named Bingham with a lucrative job offer—details to follow. All she has to do is attend the Crossroads Harvest Festival on opening day and meet his representative to discuss details. Meg is leery, but it’s not the end of the world if this doesn’t pan out. Right?

Ancient evil prowls the shadow of the eclipse, but the key to saving the present can only be found in the past. In a time-traveling adventure, Cal and Meg enter a mystic maze and journey to Babylon, the Dark Ages, and 1906 San Francisco hot on the trail of two magic artifacts lost in the recesses of time. Can they dodge demonic forces, fulfill a dead man’s mission, and discover a new future with each other?

Excerpt

“So, Cal,” Meg said. “Why meet here? What does this festival have to do with a job?” She flashed a cheeky grin. “I should warn you I don’t work the carny circuit.”

A job? An uneasy sensation settled in his gut. “I’ve no idea. I thought you knew why we were here.”

“Me?” Meg pulled back her hand and color rose to her cheeks. “What is this? Some kind of sick joke? Who does this Phillip Bingham think he is, anyway?”

Cal gaped at her. “Phillip Bingham contacted you? Not Isaac?”

“I got a letter from him with a vague employment offer from the Lux Foundation along with an invitation to attend the Crossroads Harvest Festival.” She wrinkled her brow. “It was a funny kind of letter on really old paper. The room at the inn was paid for by a man named Isaac Bingham, and I needed a job, so I figured what the hell. The instructions said a person would find me here to discuss the details. I assume that is you.” Her voice tightened in anger. “Is Phillip Bingham the town lunatic?”

“No, but I’m sorry to tell you he’s very much dead.” Cal gave her a recap of his meeting with Isaac.

As Meg listened, her eyes widened in astonishment. “Phillip Bingham died decades ago? How could he know I’d lose my job this week and be desperate enough to jump at this crazy offer?”

Cal ran a hand through his hair. “How did he know either of us would even be born?”

Meg took a wary step back. “I’m not sure I believe you.”

“I’m not sure I believe it myself. Listen, do you want to go somewhere and talk? Try to figure this out? I’ll call Isaac, tell him we found each other, and demand an explanation.”

Meg cocked her head toward the entrance of the corn maze. “Do you hear that? Someone called for help.”

“Probably lost in the maze. George made it extra challenging this year.”

“No, it’s different.” She sucked in a breath. “M-my name—I swear I heard my name.”

A gust of wind rippled the stalks. They bent toward the entrance, fluttery hands beckoning them inside. Cal strained to hear past the whispery rustle of the leaves.

Almost as if they were voices…

“I’ll check it out,” he said. “Maybe someone fell and got hurt. Wait here—”

“Not a chance.” Meg bolted into the maze, and Cal ran after her. They came to the first intersection, and she skidded to a halt. “Which way?”

“Left,” Cal said without hesitation.

They dashed deeper into the field, now left, now right, now straight ahead. With each step, Cal’s path became surer as if something pulled him with an invisible cord.

Meg puffed beside him. “How do you know which way to go?”

“I-I can’t explain it.” With every breath, the air around Cal became hotter and more oppressive, pressing on his shoulders like a stifling blanket. Humidity dropped to nothing. Beads of sweat on his brow evaporated. Cal licked his dry, cracked lips and grimaced at the gritty feel of sand on his tongue.

Sand in a corn maze?

They turned a corner and stumbled into a clearing. In the center was an arbor that arched over a circle of flagstones on the ground. A glowing flame hovered above the stones, suspended in midair. Meg and Cal exchanged dumbfounded looks and stepped forward. The clarion note of a distant horn sounded a soldier’s call to action. A surge of adrenaline flooded Cal’s veins. He hadn’t felt like this since his days on patrol with the Army. Unconsciously, Cal’s hand went to his hip, reaching for the sword. He stared at his empty hand. Sword?

The flame grew larger and brighter, shooting through the arbor into the heavens.

“Cal!” Meg’s voice sounded very far away.

“I’m here!” Cal reached for her, but the flame blinded him, blotting out the maze, blotting out the sun, blotting out the world.

Nothing remained but the roar of the cheering crowd.

Beware There Has Been A Skeleton Squad Sighting! By Tena Stetler

You have now been forewarned! As with the past three previous years, in the days leading up to Halloween, the Skeleton Squad began their search for the Halloween Spirit.   Each year the elusive Spirit has only managed to elude the Squad for only so long.  Will they catch it early this year? Which is why they were in Cripple Creek, Colorado, one of the most haunted cities in the US. They were visiting spirit friends in caves, haunted homes, and hotels hoping to get the jump on the Halloween Spirit this year. Or will their search continue until October 31st? Follow their adventures every Friday at https://www.tenastetler.com/category/authors-secrets-blog/ through Halloween!

They were sighted partying at a Rocking M Campground in Cripple Creek, Colorado. The Squad had begun their search and could be found in fire pits (yikes) around the campground,

in our wood storage,  and evading the wasps in the dead tree trunk.

Nope, no sighting of the Halloween Spirit in Rocking M Campground. However, I did overhear them say they were going to find and enlist Dave from Ohio, and our own Bone Jet for help in the search! I guess we'll have to wait and see what comes of that next week.

Yep, we happened to be camping at Rocking M that same weekend.
The Skeleton Squad climbed all over our truck begging for a ride into Colorado Springs.  As we were packing up, they stowed away in the under storage in our fifth wheel trailer.

Check back each Friday at https://www.tenastetler.com/category/authors-secrets-blog/ and see what the Skeleton Squad has been up too. Were there any sighting of the Halloween Spirit?

Now a suggestion to keep you entertained until we next meet, one of my Halloween tales, Hidden Gypsy Magic and it happens to be on sale! Check it out. You won't believe what happens at Halloween party!

The Salem Wildlife Sanctuary is Gwen Taylor's life work.  Her Irish Gypsy heritage provides a hidden talent she uses to help the creatures under her care.  But even her magical skills can't help new rescues in dire need of veterinary care.

The opportunity of signing on as the vet for Gwen's sanctuary dropped into Brock Scutter's lap after he expanded his practice to include wildlife. The personal attraction he and Gwen experience is undeniable the more their professional and personal lives collide.

Touring the only "non-haunted" house in Salem they both feel a spark of magic.  A trip to his family's cabin uncovers a heritage he didn't know existed.  If they want a future together, it means facing the consequences of awakening hidden Gypsy magic and a race against the clock to correct past wrongs.

Without the Piano – the World would BƄ

I love the piano, and so does Morgan, my hero in my new release, Sinners’ Opera.  He’s a classical pianist, but has been known to play Mr. Piano Man, in a low-rent piano bar in Charleston, SC while customers too drunk to listen threw money in a fishbowl.

Now, we all know what the piano is, but I thought I’d collect a few facts about the struck string instrument.  The exact time the piano was invented is uncertain, but its birth dates to the 1700s, in Italy.  The term piano is a shortened form of pianoforte, Italian for the instrument, which in turn derives from gravicembalo col piano e forte and fortepiano.

An acoustic piano usually has a protective wooden case surrounding the soundboard and metal strings, and 88 black and white keys. The strings are sounded when the keys are pressed or struck, and silenced by a damper when the keys are released.

Three notable brands are Steinway, Bosendorfer (both German-made), and Mason & Hamlin, an American-produced instrument and my personal favorite.  The Mason & Hamlin features a tension bar to stabilize and give longer life to the soundboard. The M&H has a beautiful, round sound with rich, deep bass and bell-like treble.

A couple of companies make electronic reproducing systems for the piano, including PianoDisc and Pianomation by QRS Music.  The keys move as if a ghost were playing.  They are really sweet and very good inspiration. The Pianomation System uses solenoids mounted under the keys to play the notes. In the newest system, the solenoids are driven by a processor which is connected to your own WiFi network. The piano can then be controlled wirelessly by any smart phone, tablet or laptop connected to your WiFi. Using the QRS PNO app, you select the album you want to hear, press play, and the piano will play the song you’ve selected. If you’ve selected a song with accompaniment, that will play through a speaker mounted under the piano.

In Sinners’ Opera, the piano features strongly. Some type of the instrument is mentioned or waiting in the wings as the story unfolds. It is a vampire paranormal (Morgan is an English lord, a pianist, and a vampire.)  BuyLink  Only $2.99!

When Cassini Fell in Love with Enceladus, so did I by Marilyn Barr

When I decided to write a yeti romance for the Monster Brides series, I didn’t want to link the Snuggling Under Snowdrifts earth-based snow monsters to the multi-author series. However, I can’t resist the lure of writing about fuzzy yet fearsome snow monsters. This standalone yeti romance needed a new home, far away from the Artic Circle of Earth. Perhaps on another planet… The professional extraterrestrial hunters within NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) would agree that Enceladus is most likely to house life—outside of Earth of course.

The Cassini spacecraft was launched in 1997 to study Saturn. It took a detour when scientists got a closer look at Enceladus. Formerly thought to be a rounded chunk of ice, scientists saw geyser bursts of water ejected from Enceladus to join Saturn’s E ring. A closer look revealed Enceladus has no true landforms except ‘tiger stripe’ vents. The discharges from the ‘tiger stripes’ contain all the chemicals required for life—water, highly concentrated oxygen, amino acids, and phosphorus. Unfortunately, Cassini wasn’t equipped to take samples or study the moon more closely. The mission was to photograph Saturn to understand its rings. No one was expecting to find a candidate for extraterrestrial existence! In 2017, Cassini crashed into Enceladus when it ran out of fuel…and fueled a million questions in the researchers.

(Cassini Stats from Nasa. gov)

With untapped potential and room for creative license, I couldn’t resist writing a yeti romance on the icy moon of Enceladus!

Evidence of oxygen-rich air and methane pockets suggests life is possible without spacesuits. This is why humans can bundle up in furs rather than wear spacesuits and air tanks. Even though they would have the ability to exchange gases (breathe and digest material), there isn’t a stable atmosphere like on Earth. There are no clouds or weather. The snow comes from geysers which erupt the pressurized water found beneath the surface. Alien yeti Pabu’s hot spring would flow upward in reality, from the bathing pool to the bedroom because of the forces within the moon—not as a waterfall rushing downward.

(NASA graphic report originally by NPR)

The main gravitation body for Enceladus is Saturn (not the much larger sun), so there is less gravity than on Earth. While the people in this story use Earthling names for the native animals they resemble, all the alien animals would have longer limbs, necks, and spines. The goats could carry more mass with less musculature because of the lower gravity. Ku Huang and her kids are inspired by adorable Changthangi goats (from the same area of Earth as the original yeti legend.)

(Image from Guidefarming of India 10 best breeds)

Could we grow plants on Enceladus? So far, the evidence points to “no” because of the liquid water under the crust instead of a rocky mantle to recycle soil. The lack of weather, freezing temperatures, and Saturn’s light as a subpar source of ultraviolet rays also would inhibit plant growth. That’s where I used my artistic license to put Earthly cold-weather crops (I used to homestead in Ohio, so I love cold-weather crops) on Enceladus.

Image from Southwest Research Institute. org

When Jaya returns to Alpha “months” have passed but they had time to grow plants from seeds at low temperatures. How is this? The “day” on Enceladus is measured by the moon’s 32-Earth-hour-long rotation. A “month” is measured by its revolution around Saturn. On Earth, our moon revolves around us to create months, but Enceladus is the opposite with a much longer orbit.

Betrothed to the Yeti takes the Cinderella tale out of this world. The year is 2700 AD and humans colonized the icy moon a few generations ago. Jaya, our heroine, was born and raised in the colony of Alpha. They lost communication with Earth in the first generation of settlers and the four abandoned villages have developed into unrelated entities. What happens when Earthlings are given a chance to start over on Enceladus? They create new folklore, religious practices, and societal structures. Visit the monthly wedding ceremony of the villages in Betrothed to the Yeti, releasing on 10/15/2023, as part of the Monster Brides book series.

Love Beyond Reality: Exploring Virtual Reality SciFi Romance by Keri Kruspe

In the realm of science fiction romance, where imagination knows no bounds, there is another way love can take on an exhilarating new dimension - the virtual reality (VR) world. As technology rapidly advances, so do the narratives that explore the intersection of human emotions and digital landscapes. Virtual reality romance is in its infant stages as a captivating subgenre. Here is a unique way to examine the complexities of love, relationships, and the blurred boundaries between the physical and the virtual.

While I haven’t explored this concept in my novels to date, I’ve often wondered how VR might help or hinder our progress as a species. Especially when it comes to romance.

The Virtual Embrace: A Digital Affair

Picture a world where lovers can transcend distance, even reality itself, to be together. In the realm of virtual reality romance. What a tantalizing possibility! As VR technology continues to evolve into an immersive and sensory-rich experience, some authors have seized on the opportunity to explore the connections that can be forged within this artificial realm.

From novels like "Love.exe" a romantic comedy by Manju Nambiar or “Unleashing Intentions” by Paulette Noble, these stories explore the allure of virtual reality romance. They tease us with their ability to transport us to imaginative realms where emotional and physical barriers are shattered. In these narratives, characters form relationships that defy conventional limitations, reveling in the freedom to express themselves without worry about real consequences…

… or do they…?

The Nature of Digital Love: Liberating or Limiting?

While the prospect of transcending the physical world through VR romance is undeniably tempting, it also raises questions about the authenticity and depth of these type of connections. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going leave the world as a novelist and explore a little dose of reality. Can love truly flourish in a digital landscape? Does the absence of physical touch undermine the emotional intimacy that underpins genuine relationships?

Lately there’s a growing concern about humans becoming more and more isolated and lonely. Especially young men. A thought provoking article in USA Today titled “Boys and Men are Lonelier Than Ever.” outlines this quandary. While it doesn’t address a romantic liaison, it does give an example of the phobias in today’s society that can lead to this phenomenon.

However, the difference between liberation and limitation is at the heart of many virtual reality romance narratives. Some stories celebrate the freedom virtual reality offers, allowing individuals to explore facets of who they are without the societal norms that often govern physical interactions. Or worrying about the blowback it can cause.

Love in the Age of Pixels: Exploring the Implications

Keep in mind virtual reality romance isn't solely the stuff of futuristic fantasies. It has real-world implications that resonate in our modern age. As we increasingly rely on digital communication and social media to connect with others, the lines between our physical and digital lives blur, prompting us to question the authenticity of these type of relationships.

One of the things I love best about VR romance, it compels us to confront these questions head-on. Are we on the cusp of a future where virtual reality becomes a legitimate way for human connections? Will what we do in the VR world impact our perceptions of love and relationships in the real world?

Let’s take the idea to the next level. What happens when our VR experience doesn’t rely on a headset? Remember Star Trek: The Next Generation? The Enterprise-D had a holodeck that transformed the physical world into anything you’d want. There was an episode in season three called “Hollow Pursuits”. In it was a character named Lieutenant Reginald Barclay shirked his duties to spend his time in the holodeck to live out his fantasies.

Are we prepared as a society to deal when that happens in the near future?

The Ethical Conundrums: Navigating the Uncharted Terrain

As with any great novel, real world problems are great fodder for any storyteller. As we consider romance in the context of virtual reality, questions arise about consent, identity, and the potential for emotional manipulation. Can we truly give informed consent in a digital realm where reality itself is malleable? And who do we need to get that consent from? And what kind of safeguards can we put in place to ensure the emotional well-being of individuals engaging in virtual relationships?

Let’s add fuel to the fire. With the introduction of AI companions as romantic partners, the question we must ask is what kind of boundaries should be between human and machines – if AI was capable of emotions (Blade Runner… I’m talkin’ to ya). Could we possibly be moving to a future where the difference between human relationships and AI interactions becomes blurry?

The Future of Virtual Reality Romance: A Reflection of Our Desires

Virtual reality romance isn't just a fanciful narrative trope. It's a mirror reflecting our evolving desires and aspirations. As we grapple with the challenges of modern relationships, from distance to digital communication, exploring this concept offers a glimpse into a world where technology bridges the gaps between hearts and minds.

At its best, VR romance holds a mirror to our evolving perceptions of love, intimacy, and connection. Here we’re faced with a challenge to contemplate the delicate interplay between the digital and the real, the authentic and the simulated. As technology hurtles us to a future where our realities are increasingly augmented by the virtual, VR romance invites us to ponder the true nature of love and what it means to be connected in an age of infinite possibilities.

One final thought. The allure of VR romance lies not only in its technological wonders but in its ability to capture the essence of human emotion and the yearning for connection that transcends the boundaries of space, time, and reality itself. It gives us a captivating, limitless canvas where we can paint the intricate, beautiful, and often enigmatic tapestry of human love.

Transportation of the future

TRANSPORTATION OF THE FUTURE
by Jessica E. Subject

While some members of my family are fascinated by automobiles and other vehicles of the past, I prefer to look to the future, especially concept vehicles from car companies, aircraft, and spacecraft.

Both my previous and upcoming series take place in a part of the universe far from here. And transportation is far more advanced than what we have on Earth. There are hovercraft that run on batteries the way of electric vehicles on this planet. These vehicles cannot leave the planet they are on. In fact, they don't fly any higher than a couple hundred feet off the ground. The space racing jets fly higher in the atmosphere, using hydrogen and ion power cells. While they have the power to leave the atmosphere, they usually don't hold enough power to reach another planet, especially after a race. Then there are the space shuttles, which fly between various planets in the quadrants of my fictional universe.

But what's ahead for the future of vehicles here on Earth?

A couple years ago, when I was writing my Shifter Towers series, I learned about the Hyundai Prophecy Concept EV. And while the company has since redesigned and released it as the Ioniq 6, maintaining the streamlined look that I love, there were features in the Prophecy that I was really looking forward to seeing in a vehicle that weren't included in the Ioniq 6. The most notable being the twin joysticks used to steer the vehicle, taking the place of the steering wheel. Many construction vehicles are already steered in the same way, as well as some helicopters and jets. I think it will be interesting when this way of steering can be found in everyday vehicles.

And last month, I watched a video from NASA about the future of aircraft. Right now, they are working on developing different types of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) working to deliver packages and fight fires to being used as taxis and ambulances. And they are also in the process of building more supersonic aircraft while developing more complex air traffic control systems and collision avoidance systems.

Speaking of supersonic aircraft, startup company, Boom Technology has already received approval to test their XB-1 supersonic jet over the Mojave desert. The XB-1 is designed to travel at Mach 2.2, which is 2.2 times the speed of sound.

Also, did you hear about the office chair that Volkswagen designed? While not destined for production, the electric-motored drivable chair is heated, has LED headlights, storage compartments, and an infotainment system. If it hovered, it would be like the chairs people spent their days in from the movie Wall-E.

So, while we don't know for sure what the future holds (Why aren't hoverboards like in Back to the Future 2 a thing already?), I am excited to see all the different concepts the various companies and organizations are working on.

What kind of vehicles would you like to see in the future?

Read more about the vehicles in my futuristic universe in the Kaddim Brothers series, and my upcoming release, 4 UNITED, the first book in my Romance Tales from the Quadrants series.

School Days by Diane Burton

Every year from kindergarten until I was 31 years old, fall meant school. If I wasn't attending school, I was teaching. My calendar revolved around the school year. I'm still attuned to school days.

As my grandchildren head off to school this week, I'm reminded of my own school days. Kindergarten and first grade were spent in a regular school--multiple classrooms, lot of kids. Then we moved out into the country. What a difference! The school building could've been used for a TV program set in the old west. Kindergarten and all eight grades were in one room. Yep, I went to a one-room school house. My sister was in kindergarten, just her and a girl down the road. In my second grade class, there were three of us, and two were cousins.

The only person scarier than the eighth grade boys was our teacher, Mr. Nutt.* When the older boys acted up, Mr. Nutt took them back to the cloakroom where his cat-of-nine-tails ensured that discipline reigned. Talk about scary.

In third grade, the class was divided into two--kindergarten through 3rd grade students were taught in the basement, while the rest of the students were in the main classroom. By the time I was in 8th grade, my class consisted of 12 kids.

My husband's school experiences were more normal. He walked to his elementary school, whereas a bus picked me up at our driveway. He had 30-35 kids in each classroom. His experiences were more like what our kids and grandkids experienced. The only similarity between my school experiences and my grandkids is riding the bus to and from school.

My school was unique, part of the old farming community prevalent in areas west of Detroit in the 1950s. I learned more in spite of the teaching situation than because of it. I've always been a reader. And when I finished my assigned work, I listened as the teacher taught the older kids math, history, geography. My brain was a sponge.

This year, our twins started kindergarten. Such enthusiasm. They were so pumped about school. Never mind, they went to all-day "young fives" last year. Their 3rd-grade sister is a reader. I'd say she takes after me, but everyone in the family are readers.

I hope our kids retain that enthusiasm for school. That they never lose the wonder of learning.

What are some of your memories of school?

The picture at the top of this post is pretty close to what I remember my old school looked like.

* Did Mr. Nutt sound familiar? Then you must have read my first science-fiction romance, Switched. Jessie says Marcus' strict demeanor reminds her of her teacher, Mr. Nutt.
