Crafting the Future: Why Writers Should Embrace AI by Keri Kruspe

As a writer, I love exploring and learning new things. And lately, I’ve been caught up in the AI craze, exploring what it can do for me in my writing career. But there are some of those in our community who cry foul, claiming AI will soon take over the creative process of fiction writing. Why, they say, pay a human when all it takes is a prompt in an AI software to get you the same thing?

Au contrair, mon frere. In my humble opinion, AI programs (like ChatGPT, Sudowrite, and Claude) are mere tools that help a writer, not replace them. Much like a typewriter back in the day. It won’t hinder the creative process, but instead enhance the experience. With that in mind, let’s take a quick look at what I mean.

What AI Can't Mimic

One of the most important things to remember is we’re humans… writing to entertain/inform other humans. Who, but us, has that kind of insight? Only we can tap into the unlimited variety of human emotions and the baggage we carry with us in all the complexities of being human. AI lacks this innate understanding of our behavior. That gives up the upper hand at creating characters with authentic feelings and flaws, as well as the importance of emotionally growing. Throughout our lives, we’ve wallowed in a plethora of emotions like joy, sorrow, love, coupled with an abundance of longing for something else, something different that only a human can experience.

Another exciting example of we can do and AI can’t is our innate urge to play with language. This is our palette… what we color the world with. As a writer of SciFi romance, I love coming up with alien and diverse ways to say something. Just recently, I had to ponder what an ancient person (who traveled in time to our present) would say in an exclamation. I’m going to keep it clean here… but some modern man won’t say “Great Caesars Ghost!” (for one thing, Ceaser hadn’t been born yet). So, I had my guy shout “By Tiamat’s titties!”. And I also took a pretty common cuss word that starts with a “f” and ends in a “k” and turned it around for an alien. They say fruk instead. I love coming up with unfamiliar words and phrases for my alien characters to use.

Another thing I do is draw inspiration from the people I’ve met and work with over the years. In fact, one of my first books is loosely based on real life. Because I felt wronged/betrayed by someone back then, I had the good guy shoot the jerk right between the eyes. Boy, I gotta tell you; that was immensely satisfying. Ah, revenge. Remember, don’t do a writer wrong, they’ll take it out on you in a novel.

Leveraging Technology Wisely

As I mentioned in the beginning, AI is a tool. While it can be used for such mundane tasks as grammar check and research, I love to use it as a writing buddy who is there whenever I need them. Especially since I wake up at the crack of almost-dawn (4:30am to get in two hours of writing before I have to leave for work). I use AI not only as a critique partner, but someone who never gets impatient with me when I ask questions I get stuck on. Sometimes more than once.

For instance, this morning I was writing a scene in my newest novel and wondered what a tree would look like on a planet where a civilization of panther-like beings of an advanced technology lived. The AI gave me more than one scenario to choose from. So, what I did was combine what I liked best about everything it suggested and came up with something new and different.

To take it up a step, I asked it what one of those creatures would dress like on that type of planet. It came up with several wardrobe suggestions. But the funnest part (yeah, I like the word funnest) was asking it to create a picture depicting this alien.

And here’s what it came up with:

Cool, eh? As I planned this blog, I asked the AI to create a picture for the header (see above). When the AI was done, this is what it told me:

“Here’s an image for your blog post. This visual aims to encapsulate the essence of human creativity and the enduring value of authentic writing in the digital age. It symbolizes the balance between traditional writing methods and modern AI technology, inviting writers to explore and assert their unique voices.”

            Can’t argue with that!

Other Benefits

Here’s an outline of some of the other benefits how an AI companion can help a writer be more productive:

  • Research Assistant: AI can analyze vast amounts of data while providing insights
  • Customization: With some programs, you can customize your AI to adapt to your particular writing style.
  • Enhanced Productivity: It can automate repetitive tasks like grammar checks, proofreading, and formatting.

·

Last Thoughts

Will AI replace authors?

As of now, I doubt AI will replace authors any time soon. Most techies and web gurus claim artificial intelligence cannot totally replace a human writer’s insight or their creativity. There is a huge market for creative writers to put themselves out there, to share their experiences with the world.

What we should concentrate on as AI advances is we, as writers, better learn how to use this wondrous innovation. Discover how to strike a balance between automation and human creativity. Use that available technology to save time so you can set your creative juices free. Let it help you weave the magic only you can create to take your writing craft to a higher level.

While AI evolves and algorithms sharpen, remember this: you are irreplaceable. The world doesn’t need another robotic rendition; it craves your authenticity. Embrace your quirks, your scars, and your hard-earned laugh lines.

AI may be the brush, but you are the artist.

The Rising Trend of Cross-Genre Romance: Mixing SciFi with Paranormal Elements by Keri Kruspe

In the ever-evolving world of romance novels, a fascinating trend has been on the rise – the fusion of genres. Authors are breaking boundaries and pushing the limits of imagination by blending two seemingly unrelated genres like science fiction and paranormal romance.

In this article, I’ll delve into the intriguing world of cross-genre romance novels, by exploring the growing popularity of combining science fiction and paranormal elements in romance. I’ll also give you examples that showcase the creative brilliance of this trend.

Exploring the Appeal

I’ve gotta admit, once I discovered authors mixing two of my favorite subgenres of romance was why I decided to write in the subgenre myself. Having grown up with a never-ending barrage of horror and science fiction, I gleefully discovered romances in my early twenties. At that time, paranormal (not to mention science fiction) romance was a long way off. Growing up with Kathleen Woodiwiss and Jude Deveraux, I happily spent my reading time with those historical/contemporary love stories.

Then came along the works of Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon. The allure of their kind of romance is undeniable to me. Here was a unique opportunity to explore uncharted territory, as a reader as well as a writer. I think it gave other authors a chance to craft stories that challenge conventions and breathe new life into tired tropes. As a reader, I was drawn to the excitement of combining two romance with a paranormal flare that created an escapist experience that I find both thrilling and emotionally satisfying.

Nowadays, the synergy of science fiction, with its futuristic technology and cosmic adventures, merges seamlessly with the paranormal mysticism, magic, and supernatural beings. The end result is a tapestry woven with threads of wonder, suspense, and as well as the satisfying “Happy Ever After” love. It takes the age-old theme of love and places it in settings where anything is possible. Love transcends time, space, and even reality itself, making stories that are as boundless as the imagination.

The Blending of SciFi and Paranormal

To understand the appeal of cross-genre romance, let’s look at what the key characteristics of both genres. Science fiction offers futuristic settings, advanced technology, and space exploration, where love stories can unfold against the backdrop of interstellar adventures. While Paranormal romance, on the other hand, introduces us to vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural entities. These stories delve into the mystical, the magical, and the extraordinary, with love often blooming in the most unexpected places.

Once put together, ah… that’s when the magic happens. The advanced technology of science fiction provides logical explanations for paranormal occurrences and creates a harmonious blend that captivates readers. The fusion of these genres allows a richer and more complex narrative, where love transcends not only time and space but also the boundaries of reality.

A couple examples of these novels that masterfully mixes these genres include works like “Blood Urge – Paranormal SciFi Alien Romance” by Pearl Tate. This series combines futuristic space travel with a love story involving fated mates with an alien race.

Another example is “Sevan: Paranormal Shifter Fated Mate Galactic SciFi” by Mandy M Roth, where a paranormal alien lion-shifter falls for a human woman.

Evolution of the Genre

The journey of cross-genre romance has been a remarkable one, tracing its origins from experimental stories to a well-established sub-genre in the modern literary landscape. The ever-changing reader preferences have definitely played a significant role in the genre's evolution. Those of us who are vicarious readers seek new and exciting narratives, cross-genre romance has risen to the occasion by offering fresh and captivating stories catering to a diverse audience.

Some notable authors that you might not have thought contributed to the development of this sub-genre includes pioneers like Mary Shelley, who blended science fiction and romance in "Frankenstein," and Anne Rice, whose "The Vampire Chronicles" brought paranormal romance to the forefront.

Rising Stars

I don’t mean to brag (okay, maybe I do), but my latest series, Ancient Alien Descendants is steeped in the paranormal. Each of the five books has a paranormal theme:

The Empath

The Shapeshifter

The Psychic

The Vampire

The Mage

I just love that SciFi romances have an unlimited pool of heroes and heroines that aren’t just alien. They can be aliens and… werewolf/vampire/ghost/wizard/god/merman/orcs/angels or any other type of fantasy creature that’s been dreamed up for thousands of years. The sky (or outer space) is the limit!

What or Who Do You Recommend?

I’m sure I’m not the only one always looking for an exciting new read in these genres. As a matter of fact, I recently went into ChatGPT and asked it whose books were more like mine. I was humbled and gratified it gave me five wonderful authors – three of whom are my absolute favorites and the last two I’ve never heard of (but I immediately went and bought the first books in their series. I can’t wait to read them!):

S.E. Smith (The Alliance)

Nalini Singh (Particularly her Psy-Changeling Series)

Gena Showalter (Alien Huntress Series)

Linnea Sinclair (RITA award winner)

Jessie Mihalik (Consortium Rebellion Series)

In Closing

I really loved venturing deeper into this subgenre of romance. Right now I’m creating a new series, but I haven’t had a chance to play with the idea of what kind of paranormal creatures my alien hunks can duplicate. (Hmm, how would a ghost work… or talking to the dead? Or wait, what about angels/demons….?).

I get shivers just thinking about it. What about you? Do you love to read a combination of SciFi and Paranormal romance? It’s those of us passionate about these types of novels that fuel the genre’s creativity and makes it so extraordinary.

But, I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves to share their recommendations. Be sure to leave them in the comment section below!

Myths to Pages: Unveiling Hidden Legends by Keri Kruspe

Whenever anyone asks me why I adore paranormal romance, I’m completely honest with them. With things around us getting crazier every day, to keep what little sanity I have left I’ve got to have an outlet where I can escape in a realm where reality and imagination intertwine. A place full of captivating stories that transport me beyond the ordinary. And I’m not talking just about well-known paranormal creatures like vampires and werewolves, even though they are still some of my favorites. Besides them there exists a treasure trove of lesser-known myths, legends, and cultural folklore that are waiting to be unearthed and woven into the tapestry of the paranormal romance narratives.

Today we’ll embark on a journey of discovery and explore the art of how we can find and adapt these hidden gems into our own writing. My intent is to not only showcase how this genre is captivating readers with twists in their enchanting tales, but how we can weave them into our own stories.

At the end I’ll share some recommendations that got me started on this journey.

Unearthing Forgotten Legends

Orisha Deity

First, as a writer, how do we find new and exciting legends to delve into? In today’s ability to delve into any subject at the touch of a keyboard, it’s easy enough to examine other cultures we aren’t familiar with! Deep in the depths of thousands of ancient cultures as well as regional folklore, the world is brimming with stories that have yet to be told. If we go beyond the familiar tales of Western mythology, there are rich narratives of African, Asian, Indigenous, and other cultures. For instance, the Kitsune of Japanese folklore, shapeshifting fox spirits, offer a captivating twist on the classic shifter trope. The Yoruba tradition's Orisha deities, with their intricate personalities and powers, have intense tales that add layers of depth to any character. Just look at the thriving popularity of Japanese anime to see what I mean.

Best of all, by unearthing these forgotten legends, we can infuse any paranormal romance with a global mosaic that can’t help but attract a new base.

Weaving Cultural Authenticity

As with any new endeavor that involves a culture you aren’t familiar with, it's vital to approach them with sensitivity and respect. I know how excited I get when I’m researching a new idea. I try to understand the historical, cultural, and societal contexts where these myths originate. If you can, engage with experts and immerse yourself in their expertise. That way you not only enrich your writing but also honor the cultures that have nurtured these stories for generations.

Breathing Life into Characters

Hidden legends offer a trove of inspiration for character development. The figures within these myths often possess unique attributes, flaws, and motivations that can serve as a blueprint for any paranormal romance protagonists as well as the villains. For example, drawing from the Slavic myth of Rusalka, a water nymph can bring both love and danger to your story. She’s a complex character who struggles with her dual nature. Here’s an interplay of light and darkness that adds layers of complexity, making her more relatable and engaging to readers.

Redefining Supernatural Powers

This is one I struggle with all the time. How to I make this age-old legend and turn it into something new and exciting? Incorporating lesser-known myths lets me reimagine the supernatural powers that drive any character. The Irish Banshee, for instance, could have premonition powers that come with a haunting cost, adding depth and tension to any romantic journey.

Creating a Richer Story World

A paranormal romance isn't just about characters. It's also about the world they live in. Hidden legends can serve as the foundation for building intricate and immersive story worlds. Especially for someone like me who writes SciFi romance, a sub-genre under the paranormal umbrella. Without this key element, my romance adventures fall flat. I’ve got to work through the architecture, landscapes, and societies of other worlds that inspire my fictional settings. I may adapt elements like mystical forests, ancient temples, or ethereal realms as a backdrop where my romance unfolds. My goal is to take my readers in a world that is both magical as well as believable.

Tapping into Emotional Resonance

This is a biggie for me. One of the greatest advantages of our cultural legends lies in their ability to evoke deep emotions. Many of these stories are steeped in themes of love, sacrifice, betrayal, and longing—themes that resonate powerfully with readers. As a writer, I do my best to adapt these narratives so I can capture the essence of these emotional currents. My intent is to layer the narrative and infused them into the relationships, conflicts, and journeys of my heroes. By doing so, I strive to create a profound connection that lingers with readers long after they've turned the last page.

Conclusion

In the realm of paranormal romance, where imagination reigns supreme, the sky (or universe!) is the limit for creating boundless storytelling. By venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of popular mythology and delving into the hidden legends of cultures around the world, it’s easy to unearth a wealth of inspiration that can invigorate anyone’s writing. Keep in mind any adaptation requires diligence, respect, and creativity. But, oh the rewards are immeasurable. Now you’ll have a tapestry of characters, worlds, and emotions that captivate readers and breathe fresh life into the genre.

So, embark on this journey of discovery! Let the hidden legends guide your pen to create tales that enchant, intrigue, and touch the hearts of all who read them.

And, as promised, here is a small handful of some of my favorite paranormal romances that started me on my paranormal romance journey:

Without the Piano – the World would BÆ„

I love the piano, and so does Morgan, my hero in my new release, Sinners’ Opera.  He’s a classical pianist, but has been known to play Mr. Piano Man, in a low-rent piano bar in Charleston, SC while customers too drunk to listen threw money in a fishbowl.

Now, we all know what the piano is, but I thought I’d collect a few facts about the struck string instrument.  The exact time the piano was invented is uncertain, but its birth dates to the 1700s, in Italy.  The term piano is a shortened form of pianoforte, Italian for the instrument, which in turn derives from gravicembalo col piano e forte and fortepiano.

An acoustic piano usually has a protective wooden case surrounding the soundboard and metal strings, and 88 black and white keys. The strings are sounded when the keys are pressed or struck, and silenced by a damper when the keys are released.

Three notable brands are Steinway, Bosendorfer (both German-made), and Mason & Hamlin, an American-produced instrument and my personal favorite.  The Mason & Hamlin features a tension bar to stabilize and give longer life to the soundboard. The M&H has a beautiful, round sound with rich, deep bass and bell-like treble.

A couple of companies make electronic reproducing systems for the piano, including PianoDisc and Pianomation by QRS Music.  The keys move as if a ghost were playing.  They are really sweet and very good inspiration. The Pianomation System uses solenoids mounted under the keys to play the notes. In the newest system, the solenoids are driven by a processor which is connected to your own WiFi network. The piano can then be controlled wirelessly by any smart phone, tablet or laptop connected to your WiFi. Using the QRS PNO app, you select the album you want to hear, press play, and the piano will play the song you’ve selected. If you’ve selected a song with accompaniment, that will play through a speaker mounted under the piano.

In Sinners’ Opera, the piano features strongly. Some type of the instrument is mentioned or waiting in the wings as the story unfolds. It is a vampire paranormal (Morgan is an English lord, a pianist, and a vampire.)  BuyLink  Only $2.99!

Expanding Horizons: The Benefits of a Writer Moving Beyond Kindle Unlimited by Keri Kruspe

With an exhilarating sense of adventure, I have made a momentous decision in my writing career—to venture beyond the confines of Kindle Unlimited exclusivity and embrace the vast world of readership. As a science fiction romance author, Kindle Unlimited has been instrumental in cultivating my audience, but I’m now ready to unlock a whole new realm of possibilities by going "wide." The path ahead holds immense promise and exciting advantages that I am eager to explore, ones that I simply can’t realize if I remain confined to a single platform.

Join me as I delve into the reasons driving this bold move, and witness the incredible opportunities that lie ahead on this literary odyssey.

Enhanced Visibility and Reach

While Amazon Kindle Unlimited offers a massive user base, the platform is saturated with a plethora of titles, making it challenging for any writer to stand out. By branching out to other online sites, I can tap into different readerships, increasing visibility and reach.

Platforms like Kobo, Nook, and Apple Books provide access to a diverse global audience that may not be active on Kindle Unlimited. These platforms have their own loyal readerships, that will enable me to connect with a wider demographic. Expanding this way can lead to increased discoverability and help build a dedicated fan base outside of Amazon's ecosystem.

Diversification of Income

While Amazon Kindle Unlimited provides a subscription-based model that compensates authors based on page reads, things have changed there. In an article by Dan Holloway from Alliance of Independent Authors in February of this year states “Kindle Unlimited raises UK subscriptions price by nearly 20%”. Will that increase in revenue be shared to the writers? Dan continues: “… payments from the 2014 launch to now. In that time, the payout per page read has dropped 23% from .58 of a cent to .43 of a cent.” He further explains, “And authors shouldn’t expect to see any benefit. Indeed, any increase in payout per page may be the result of fewer overall page views if subscriber numbers go down.”

Are per page reads a better income generator than selling an entire book? In an article in The Indie Life, John Coon explains his experience:

“I tested out one of my stories, In Hell’s Shadow, on Kindle Unlimited for three years before finally pulling it from KU at the end of March 2023. During that time, my story earned 454 total page reads. The revenue generated from that 3-year KU stint equaled less than 10 sales. Ironically, In Hell’s Shadow sold 62 copies outside of Kindle Unlimited during the same 3-year period. I’ve experienced considerable success going wide with all my other novels and short stories, gaining steady sales with a variety of other retailers over the past five years.”

Another advantage of diversifying my distribution channels is the multitude of options I can explore to get my books in front of a world-wide audience. Such as direct sales, individual e-book purchases, and even print-on-demand services.

To do that all I need is an author website (done!) or utilizing platforms like Smashwords or Draft2Digital (which is what I use) that allows me to sell books directly to readers. This not only offers greater control over pricing and marketing strategies but also enables me to retain a higher percentage of earnings. Additionally, expanding into print-on-demand services like IngramSpark or Lulu could grant opportunities for physical book sales, appealing to readers who prefer the experience of a printed novel.

Access to New Marketing Channels

While Kindle Unlimited provides promotional tools like Kindle Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions, other platforms offer unique marketing strategies as well. Many online sites have dedicated newsletters, blogs, and author spotlights to help writers gain exposure to a broader audience. My goal this year is to explore what these other platforms offer.

By joining multiple platforms, I can take part in cross-promotions, guest blogging, or exclusive interviews, leveraging the promotional power of different communities. Engaging with new readers through social media platforms, forums, and mailing lists associated with these sites can generate valuable word-of-mouth buzz.

Let’s not forget to mention BookBub prefers a “wide” author in their Feature Deal promotions.

But the main reason to branch out is this: If my career lies in the hands of only one platform, what happens if they kick me out? Or, God forbid, Amazon decides to dump authors all together? Back when Amazon started, it was with books. Amazon worked hand in hand with their authors to build their reach. Now authors are just a small cog in their gigantic wheel.

Relying on one stream of income also leaves me vulnerable to the whim of that platform, limits growth to a wider audience and comes with a total lack of flexibility. I am an independent author for a reason… these are my stories and I don’t appreciate anyone telling me what I can or can’t do with them.

Building a Brand Beyond Amazon

While Amazon is undeniably a dominant force in the publishing industry, solely relying on its platform can limit the visibility of my author's brand. By expanding to other online sites, I have the chance to extend my reach and enhance my professional credibility and brand to those who’ve I’ve never touched before.

At the same time, I’m hoping it will open other opportunities, such as speaking engagements, guest appearances, and invitations to participate in industry events. It has a good chance to help raise my profile and attract new readers and publishing opportunities.

Conclusion

While Amazon Kindle Unlimited undoubtedly offers advantages for all writers, venturing beyond this platform can unlock a plethora of benefits. I’ve published with Amazon for five years exclusively, hoping it would give me the chance to realize my dream of quitting a full-time job and making a living by my writing. In all that time, my sales and reads have remained stagnant. Time’s a wastin’ and staying with them doesn’t look my dream is going to happen there anytime soon.

So, I think I’ll take Albert Einstein’s advice. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Who am I to argue with a world renown genius?

A Sneak Peek at Upcoming Projects by Keri Kruspe

As a writer, I sometimes find myself at a loss when finishing a book, much less a series. But this time, I have the opposite problem! I’ve got too many stories vying in my head for attention, clamoring to get out. Instead of jumping into another series, I decided to attempt something I’ve never done before, write a collection of three short stores. I’m calling this compilation An Alien Heritage. These novellas serve as a continuation of some of the minor characters from my last two series, Ancient Alien Descendants and An Alien Exchange.

Here are the first two tales from the Ancient Alien series:

Qhasheik's Pod

This is a groundbreaking romance genre for me to write. Not only is it a love story that plays out between three aliens from different species: Qhasheik, Abiditan and Katsuki (two males and one female), but it's also my first time writing a m/m love segment. For inspiration, I relied on Tracy St. John's Clans of Kalguor series as inspiration with writing the love scenes. When I included the female, I put careful thought into ensuring the relationship between the three of them was respectful as well as sizzling.

These three characters were first introduced in Alien Legacy: The Vampire, the fourth book of the Ancient Aliens Descendants series. They also play a part in the finale of the series, Alien Legacy: The Mage. At the end of that story, Katsuki and her loves were given the distinct honor of determining the fate of Sub Prince Murduk, the arch villain. It was decided since he was a despotic leader of a patriarchal culture, his fate should be left up to a fellow member of the Federation Consortium, Katsuki's home planet, Runihura. That planet’s government is a democratic one with a monarchical head in a matriarchal society. What better place for a man who looked down on women to find his life (or death) now rests in their capable hands?

Of course, things don’t go as planned. Here is the tag line I’ve come up with for it as well as the short blurb:

What if you were told you didn’t exist?

As Qhasheik, Abiditan, and Katsuki journey to her home planet with the disposed dictator Sub Prince Murduk, they are faced with unexpected challenges.

Upon arrival, Katsuki discovers she’s been declared dead, and her loves are at risk of being arrested for being males without a legitimate female owner. Faced with the threat of banishment and the loss of her loved ones, Katsuki must use her wits to challenge the cousin who betrayed her and conspired to make her a prisoner on Akurn.

Will she be able to reclaim her freedom and protect those she loves, or will she be overpowered by the forces conspiring against her?

Claude & Amata

For a complete change of pace from the first novella, this story stays on Earth and involves a love story between a human man and an alien female. Claude is a fifty-something man from the CIA while Amata is an alien Akurn woman who has the appearance of someone in their early to mid-twenties. Since her lifespan is tied to her home planet (one year for them is 3,600 years for us) is for all practical purpose’s immortal.

Having lived so long, Amata experienced marriage to a human man a couple of hundred years ago. When he died of old age, she swore she’d never put herself out there ever again to love another human. Claude too lost a beloved wife years before he met Amata but was willing put himself out there to woo and win the alluring alien.

If only life was that easy. Here is the blurb and tagline for that story:

Can an immortal and a mortal live happily ever after?

Claude, a battle-weary former spy with a broken heart lost his beloved wife to cancer and faced a lonely life on Earth. Amata, an ageless immortal from the planet Akurn, vowed she’d never endure the anguish of losing a loved one again after her husband of long ago passed from old age.

As fate threw these two strangers together to save Earth from an alien invasion, the irresistible attraction between them was undeniable. But their opposing states of mortality created a rift that seemed impossible to bridge.

When Amata is kidnapped by a dangerous criminal, Claude risks it all to save her. Even though he knows full well that the person he loves would live forever while he won’t.

Can these two lonely souls find a way to survive together… for eternity?

Lok's Love

Now, the long anticipated short story from An Alien Exchange series is finally here.

I admit I never understood why I kept this story in the background… until I finished this last series. Once I tied the second series into my first one and the end of book 5, it became clear why I held onto Lok’s tale so long. I needed it to launch the next book series that involves the four hunky men [caution: spoiler alert!] that we thought were lost in the series prologue (offered for FREE when you signed up for my newsletter), titled The Day Behind Tomorrow.

The last time we were with Lok is at the end of Chloe’s Turn. There the villain of that series, Chancellor U’unk (who is also Lok’s twin brother) meets his end. I’ve had readers ask me over the years what happened to Lok after that? He deserves his own HEA!

            I couldn’t agree more.

While I’ve finished the other two novellas, Lok’s Love is still in the planning stage. I do have his lady love’s name… Althea. I can’t give you a lot of details except for the tagline:

Could you let go of everything you hold dear for the chance of something better?

And After That...

Lok's Love is not only the launching point for my next series, Alien Legacy Brotherhood, but it’s giving me the chance to introduce my newest villains, the Varrlii. These aliens hail from the Andromeda galaxy from a planet known as Xeutov. The new bad guys are blue crystal-based humanoids that discovered a way to jump from their galaxy to ours through an undetected wormhole-like black hole.

Lord Baelon is their narcissistic leader, who was instrumental in eliminating all but their own species in their galaxy. And now they plan to expand their agenda to other galaxies.

And we’re next.

Excerpt From Alien Legacy: The Mage by Keri Kruspe

In the Ancient Alien Descendants series, the five main heroines were identical quintuplets separated at a very young age. In fact, in the first three stories, these ladies had no idea they were anything but human. It was a shock when they discovered they were alien/human hybrids, test-tube babies. An alien race called the Akurn's created them as a weapon against their enemies.

Unknown to the aliens, a resistance group known as the WOTA (Warriors of the Abandoned) kidnapped all five girls when they were toddlers and separated them to be raised apart on Earth, far out of reach of the Akurns.

In the final story of this series, I gave a glimpse of how that happened as seen by the female protagonist, Jazmi, the heroine in Alien Legacy: The Mage. Here is an excerpt (with minor editing) from that novel due to be release on Valentine's Day!

♥♥♥

Eighteen-month-old Test Subject One sucked her thumb and watched the strange grown-ups running around the room like dodo heads. She glanced at her sister, Test Subject Five, curled next to her, whimpering in her sleep. Popping her thumb out of her mouth, she placed a comforting hand on her sister’s forehead and sent her a wave of calm. Her sister’s thick dark hair was soft, but slick with sweat. Lines of tears creased her chubby cheeks as she sniffled before her face smoothed in sleep.

Test Subject One glanced at her other three sisters in the enclosed pen across from her. Test Subject Two was awake. Her dual-colored eyes of orange and brown were wide as she watched the group of scurrying adults.

Test Subject One tilted her head, trying to hear what the big ones whispered as they hobbled around her sisters’ cage. She squinted, trying to read their minds. But all she got was stupid static.

“Are you sure these are the ones Thoth made to attract Princess Inanna's sons?” This came from a really big man. His booming voice didn’t whisper very well.

She wrinkled her nose. His hair was weird. Instead of the bright white of the mean scientists, his hair was dark like her sisters’.

“Keep your voice down, Damuzi!” A woman's harsh response was low and made Test Subject One giggle. “Your whisper makes more noise than the rest of us put together.” The pretty lady grabbed the giant’s arm and shook it as she glanced around. “Of course, they are. You brought the blasium, didn't you?” She let go of his tight sleeve and held out her hand with the glare.

“Ah, Edinni, you know I did.” His full cheeks reddened above his close-cropped beard as he plopped a thin silver wand in her outstretched hand.

Test Subject One wanted to run her hands over the soft-looking hair around the strange man’s face. She clapped with a silent giggle. Maybe if he got close enough, she could grab the prickly-looking hair and squeeze.

“Oh, those poor babies!” A high-pitched squeal came from another white-haired lady. Her gown was so pretty. The sparkly dress was a rainbow of colors. Test Subject One stuck her tongue out at the ugly one-piece suit she wore. She hated the icky tan color. She wanted something nice and bright. When she got big, she'd wear nothing but pretty dresses every day.

“Amata, stand back!” Another man grabbed Amata's elbow and pulled her away. This one had white hair and pale skin like the pretty ladies, but there was something about his unfriendly face that made Test Subject One frown. “Let Damuzi open the cage. Then you can grab one.” The man's head tilted to the side. His icy-blue eyes glanced back and forth.

“Get out of the way, Amata! I get first pick.” Another white-haired lady pushed her way in front of Amata.

The pretty Amata in her cute dress frowned and backed away. “Eulli, you're going to scare these girls by rushing to them like that.”

“Look at that one!” Eulli, with wild eyes, turned to Test Subject One's cage and gripped the bars with a shake. She stared.

When the cage rattled, it woke Test Subject Five, making her cry.

Test Subject One sent a wave of calm to her sister and held her hand. It's okay. I won't let the bad people hurt you. Her sister's dark eyes filled with tears as her lower lip quivered. But she stayed quiet.

“She looks like us.” The woman gushed.

Test Subject One's stomach dropped. Why was the crazy lady pointing at her?

“I want that one.”

Test Subject One stuck her thumb back in her mouth to stop from blurting out a loud no. She didn’t want to go anywhere with that freaky lady. She had to stay here and take care of her sisters. Who else would protect them from the nasty things the scientists had in mind for them?

She glanced at the others in the cage across from her. The only reason they let Test Subject Five stay with her was to keep her from constantly crying and wailing. Her other two sisters were awake now.

Test Subject Two narrowed her dual-colored orange-brown eyes at the man in front of her.

The other two stared with their single-colored brown eyes at the group of strangers around them.

“It’s about time you used the blasium to open it up, Damuzi.” The crazy lady’s ice-blue eyes gleamed at Test Subject One.

When the big guy pointed the slender device at the cage door, it dissolved open.

At the cage opening, Test Subject One stood on wobbly legs. She grabbed a cage bar for support and put herself in front of her sister to protect her any way she could.

The woman grabbed Test Subject One under the arms and lifted her out of the cage.

Test Subject Five screamed when the bony woman whisked her away.

“I'm going to call you Jazmi-Tiamat.” The woman pulled Jazmi’s face to hers and kissed her enthusiastically on both cheeks. The lady sighed. “You are so pretty, just like a little princess.” The woman swung her around and shoved her at the creepy man next to her.

He raised his hands in protest and stepped back. “Hey, get that away from me. I’m not touching one of those... things.” He crossed his arms over his thin chest. “I still don't see why we’re doing this.” His bleached-blue eyes darted from side-to-side. “Don't we have enough problems since you made us leave Eengurra, Eulli?”

“Oh, stop your whining, Lepit-Enlil.” She pulled Test Subject One close and leaned in to whisper to the guy. “Think of the thousands of credits we’ll have when we go to Earth. We can leave this goddess-forsaken place and live in the lap of luxury like we’re entitled to.”

Her sour breath made Test Subject One sneeze. She pinched her lips together and puffed her cheeks holding her breath. It didn’t take long to blow the air out with a huff. Squeezing her nose, she breathed through her mouth.

“If you hadn't made that unscrupulous deal with Warlord Mattaki-Bunu, we’d still be on Akurn,” the bad lady hissed.

Her flying spit hit Test Subject One in the eye. Lips quivering, she rubbed it out with a fist.

“Now keep quiet.” The woman snarled at Lepit-Enlil. “And look like you're excited about taking this on.”

Test Subject One blinked and turned in the man's direction.

He stood with a frown and his thin arms crossed.

“Besides,” Eulli continued. “With her coloring, she's got to be like us, and won't have any of the special talents they reputed the Adamou to have.”

Screams and shouts in the background made baby Jazmi push on the woman's shoulders to watch her sisters.

Both cage doors were gone.

People grabbed her sisters who fought and cried.

Test Subject Two struggled with the older woman holding her while Test Subject Three gripped the lady named Amata as if her life depended on it.

Two men grabbed Test Subject Five out of the cage.

Her piercing wails were so loud they drowned out the words the big people yelled at each other.

Jazmi struggled in the woman's bony hold, trying to get loose so she could go to her sister and calm her down. She stretched out her arms to her sisters. Don't cry! Don't cry! She sent a mental picture of them hugging. But the terror her sisters suffered were too great. The image didn't get through. The more her sisters struggled, the harder Test Subject One fought to get loose.

Eulli grabbed her tighter and headed for the door. “Let's get out of here, Lepit-Enlil, before we get caught.”

Test Subject One screamed and pulled the woman’s tightly woven hair, desperately trying to get her to turn back.

No... no! She couldn’t leave her sisters. Who would protect them? Who would take care of them, so the bad men didn't hurt them?

“You're right, Eulli. We gotta go while the Transkip is running.” The man grabbed the woman’s sleeve and pulled her out of the room.

Baby Jazmi didn’t watch where they were going. All she saw were her sisters crying, reaching out and screaming for her not to leave them. “No! Stop! Take me back! Take me back now!” For the first time in her life, Test Subject One spoke to the big people.

The woman stumbled but didn't stop.

No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't squirm out of the woman's unyielding hold as they raced down a deserted hallway. The last thing Jazmi heard were the heartbreaking wails of her terrified sisters.
