Filigree and Fur By Megan Slayer

Book 3 in the Billion Dollar Wolf series

Paranormal M/M Contemporary Romance

Novella

Pride Publishing

Two lone wolves finding common threads and love.

Grove Meade likes his computers and his solitary life. He can come and go as he pleases and only answers to the pack leaders when they need his specialized skills. He won’t deny he’s one lonely wolf, but love isn’t in his future, right? When he meets CJ Johns, everything changes and his world is just a bit too small.

CJ Johns has seen a lot in his life—the death of his family, the destruction of his pack and the loss of pack lands. He’s determined not to let those devastations get him down, but when he’s forced to live off the land that’s not even his, his spirits sink. He can’t even convince his wolf to come forward. The one bright spot in his life is Grove. He knows little about the fellow wolf shifter, but he’s smitten.

When a problem from CJ’s past threatens his future, it’s up to CJ and Grove to decide whether they want the blossoming feelings between them to last or fade like the winter snow.

Reader advisory: This book contains mentions of a sexual predator, coercion, murder, homophobia, and non-nurturing parenting.

“I meant what I said. I want to hire you,” Grove said. “We’ll get your stuff and you’ll live with me. I need someone to handle a few tasks for me.”

“What kind of tasks?” CJ asked between bites.

“Don’t want the job?”

“I do, but I’d like to know what I’m doing before I accept.” CJ stuffed a piece of bacon into his mouth.

“Cleaning up, some laundry, stuff like that,” he said. “Are you interested? I’ll give you a place to live and clothes, plus food and internet. You’ll be able to do your artwork, too.”

CJ ate a bit more and seemed to mull over the opportunity. “You’re not afraid of me? I shift.”

“So do I.” He thought they’d established that they were both wolves.

“Oh yeah.” CJ put his fork down. “I’m so used to dealing with people who are just humans, not shifters. Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize.” He cut up his salad. “How long has it been since your last shift?”

“Six months.” CJ finished the bacon. “Do you shift a lot?”

“I’ve tried to tamp down my wolf.” That sounded so silly. Why restrain the wolf? He had a power few others had and he didn’t seem to want it.

“I did, too. If no one knew, then no one would try to kill me.”

“Well, if you come with me, I’ll protect you. Promise. You’ll have space to relax, exist and run if you want to shift in return for hard work.”

CJ cut his burger in half. “You’re serious?”

“Deadly. I can’t let you get hurt in the elements and since you don’t have a pack, you’ll need protection. You should be part of a pack and we have space. Why not join us? I can help you and I want to.”

CJ rested his hands on his lap “I do want to belong.” He hesitated. “Can I leave at any time?”

“If you want to.” He didn’t see why that should happen, but he’d give CJ his freedom if he so chose.

“Can I bring my pet?”

“Pet?” A wolf shifter with a pet? “What kind?”

“My cat.” CJ didn’t move. “I can’t leave her behind.”

“Sure.” He’d never had a pet and wasn’t sure how hard it’d be, but he’d give it a try. “I’ll ensure you’ve got supplies for her, too.”

CJ nodded. “Then I’ll work for you. I’ll put in honest work for honest pay.”

It wasn’t the most eloquent way to put it, but he didn’t care. “Then we’ve got a deal.”

CJ frowned. “It’s starting to rain harder.”

“Sure is.” He nodded to the food. “Why don’t we get it to go and we’ll eat at my place? We’ll retrieve your things and your cat, then head to where it’s safe.”

CJ’s smile returned. “Deal.”

Here's a little bit from Not So Sham Wedding by Megan Slayer

Lucas hated hearing Hudson fight with his sisters. The girls might be younger than him, but they treated him like their junior. Hud was brilliant and good at business. When he made decisions, his choices tended to pay off well.

The concept of marriage, even one entered under duress, seemed far-fetched. He and Hud worked together. They were partners in business, and he considered Hud his best friend, but to marry him…

“She’s so blunt.” Hudson shoved his hands into his pockets. “What does she know?”

“She thinks she knows what’s best for you,” Lucas said. “Hud, she might be right.”

“Why?”

“I’m your assistant, and I’m not good husband material.” He barely kept his two houseplants alive. How in the hell would he handle a real relationship? He spent too much time with Hudson at the office and traveling for business.

“Doesn’t matter. We’re going to Vegas tonight.” Hudson paced the length of the outer office. “No, isn’t Rebeka an ordained minister?” He shook his head. “No, we’ll go to Vegas. It’s faster and we can move forward without having the disaster of doing this at the last minute.” He stopped. “Call Rebeka just in case it’s faster to do it here in the office.”

Lucas had grown used to Hudson’s unique method for handling issues. He talked them out until he came to the proper conclusion. The best thing for Lucas to do was trust his boss. He stared at Hudson for another moment.

Hudson had been the feature of his naughty dreams since the night they met. He loved a man who dressed well and had confidence. That and his dark eyes and dazzling smile, he warmed Lucas all over. He’d seen Hudson naked a couple of times and knew he didn’t disappoint. Besides, he’d harbored a secret fantasy of being stretched across Hudson’s desk while Hudson pumped into him.

Lucas picked up the phone and dialed Rebeka’s number. After four rings, she answered.

“This is Ms. Wederspoon. How may I help you?”

“Hi, Rebeka. This is Lucas Cole. Can you come up to Mr. Granger’s office as soon as possible?” Lucas asked. “We have a question for you.” We … it sounded so strange, but oddly right.

Matthew opened the door. “It’s eight in the morning and I’m tired. I don’t care if it is fifty degrees out, I’m not running right now.” He frowned. “Wait, you said you had a problem. Did you get my mail again?”

“Sort of, maybe?” Tommy bit back his desperation and fear. “I found kittens.”

“Kittens?” Matthew peeked into the box. “They’re only a few days old, but their eyes are open. Where were they? Is the mother with them?”

“I found these three in the bushes.” He fought to catch his breath. “I don’t know what to do. I think the momma perished.”

Matthew sighed. “Jesus.”

“If you don’t want to give me a hand, I’ll take them to the clinic.” Tommy covered the mewling kittens with the towels and box flaps. “Sorry I bothered you.”

“If you take them to the clinic, they could put them down,” Matthew said. “Kittens without a mother require special attention we don’t have at the clinic and they might not survive anyway.”

“That’s terrible.” Tommy shook his head. “Look, I don’t know anything about them. Shouldn’t I have bottles and formula or something? I’ll take care of them.” He needed to be sure about the mother cat, though. “Will you check on Momma? I’ll pay you for the home visit.”

Matthew shoved his feet into a pair of boots. “I didn’t think you were an animal lover.”

“I didn’t think you were so heartless,” Tommy snapped. “Put them down? They’d truly do that?”

Matthew grabbed his scarf. “First, I said they might—not me. Second, they are young kittens. It can be tricky because they’re so small. The averages aren’t in their favor if the mother has rejected them. It’s not being cruel. It’s being honest. That said, I’ll help you. I can’t imagine being left alone, even if today is the warmest it’s been all year. Where’s the mother?”

“In the bushes. Can’t miss her. Ginger cat by the bush closest to the flower box,” Tommy said. “Do I take these guys inside?”

“Take them to my living room. I’ve got milk replacer at the house. If the mother has expired, I’ll show you what to do to give the kittens get the best start. Ensure they’re warm. Pushy will try to get involved, so just let her. She simply wants to investigate and won’t hurt them.” Matthew hustled past the hedgerow and across Tommy’s lawn.

Tommy stepped into Matthew’s house. He’d never been inside before. The best he’d done was catch glimpses of the interior when he’d gone for an evening run and Matthew’s lights were on.

Pushy trotted up to Tommy. She didn’t bark but wagged her tail. She sniffed at the box until he put the cardboard on the floor. He had petted her head and chatted to her plenty of times when she’d managed to tunnel under the fence between his and Matthew’s yards. “Hi, Push.” He sat on the floor. “I’ve got kittens. See?” He moved one of the flaps. “Three kittens.”

Pushy whined and nosed the box, then let out what sounded like a howl.

Tommy petted her, trying to soothe the dog. “I’m sorry, Push. What’s wrong?”

Matthew strode into the house. “Momma has expired. She probably froze to death or starved trying to protect them. She was so thin.”

Tommy’s heart sank. He’d hoped she could be saved. “Why don’t you keep these guys, Squeak, Eek and Meek? I’ve got a shoebox and will bury Momma.” He stood. “When I’m done, you can give me the rundown as to how to take care of them.”

“You’re sure you want to take them in?”

“Someone has to. They’ve had a rough start in life and it’s the least I can do, giving them a fighting chance. It’s the official first day of spring and everyone needs that chance to survive.”

“I admire you, Tommy.”

“Don’t admire me until we know they’re all okay.” He half-smiled, faking confidence, then abandoned the box. He headed outside and over to his garage. Once he’d emptied a shoebox, he took to the task of giving Momma a proper burial. He might not be able to help her, but he could take care of her babies. If it meant spending time with Matthew, then even better.

Spring was supposed to be the time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Maybe he and Matthew could form a strong alliance or something more.

I never thought Matthew and I could bond over a triad of abandoned kittens.

Soft Alabaster by Megan Slayer

Celestial Mates, book 7

From Evernight Publishing
Art by Jay Aheer

One man out of time and another desperate to share his life with that perfect someone. Can their answers come from a broken curse?

Owen Reed loves his secondhand store, but he’d rather run it with a partner. He’s tired of being lonely and having one-night stands. He wants a love to last forever. When he ends up with a statue of a man in pain, he has no idea how special this statue could be. Is love possible with the pained figure?

Sydney Keeler knows he belongs anywhere but locked in alabaster. When he’s delivered to Owen’s store, the unexpected happens—he can feel Owen’s hands on him. He wants to break free and be with the man with the sparkling blue eyes. Can Owen break the curse? If so, will Owen accept a man who’s been cursed to exist in alabaster? Can they have the love they deserve?

One kiss will determine their fate.

Excerpt ©2020 Megan Slayer, All Rights Reserved

Sydney hated his pose. God, he’d been in the midst of begging for his life and for Arai’s life to be spared when Zeus cursed them. He hadn’t deserved to be reduced to stone. So, he’d been a terrible lover to Zeus and horrible at his job of guarding him. When he’d signed on to be a protector, he thought it was a joke. He hadn’t realized Zeus really wanted someone to play bodyguard for him. Sydney had been in love with the idea of living on Olympus and protecting a god. He never would’ve guessed Zeus truly demanded monogamy, even when he played around with everyone on the staff.
Good Lord. Who said things like, “I want you to come to Olympus and be my warrior”? No one that Sydney knew, yet he’d followed Zeus to a place that seemed like a dream and better than any fantasy.
Zeus hadn’t been joking.
Then again, Sydney hadn’t believed the silver fox was a true god. Were other gods roaming the earth? According to Zeus, the entire clan of Olympian deity lived there. Sydney hadn’t seen anyone besides Zeus, but he hadn’t been paying attention.
The adventure of living on Olympus was more than enough for him. He loved a good quest, especially if he could be himself. Zeus hadn’t minded he was gay. In fact, Zeus encouraged him to explore his sexuality. He spent his days guarding Zeus and his nights fucking him. All had been well until Sydney met Arai.
Arai had been everything Sydney ever wanted in a man—beautiful, masculine, sexy, and interested in him. He and Sydney guarded Zeus and stole off at night to make love. None of Zeus’s warnings had been enough to prevent him and Arai from getting together.
Sydney had been in love with Arai and felt confident about being out. He could love who he wanted and not be ashamed. He even embraced the idea he’d upset Zeus, but things would work out. They always did—until Zeus didn’t cooperate. He wanted Sydney to be his plaything and belong to no one else.
He winced, although no one could see the gesture. He still remembered the panic in Arai’s eyes when he’d been found guilty of being with Sydney and the pain of losing their relationship.
Now Sydney couldn’t tell anyone about his troubles or his curse. How could he if he couldn’t talk? At least he didn’t have that awful sheet over him and he wasn’t in the musty old house.
His brother, Max, hadn’t appreciated him and his younger brother, Stan, hadn’t wanted him. They had no idea he was locked in the alabaster. All they knew was a sculpture of someone resembling their brother had shown up in the parlor of the family home.
Voices caught his attention. He hadn’t liked when the woman caressed him, but he wanted the man to return. He could gaze at the fellow who seemed to run the shop where he was now housed. He’d been locked in the family parlor, moved to a barn, left in a garage, and then shipped to a house where Max left him in the back room. Now he lived in a “junk shop”—as the younger girl called the place.
The man with the sparkling eyes stood in front of Sydney. “Well, you’re all mine.” He folded his arms. “I’m not sure you’re worth anything, but I’m stuck with you.” His blue eyes flashed and the thin outcropping of hairs on his chin caught the light.
Heat, like the rush of excitement he felt when he’d first seen Arai, washed over him. Who was this man and why did he seem to kick the temperature up so high?

Novella
Cover Art by Karen Fox

Love on the lake? With a merman? Impossible. Or is it?

Camryn Matthews knows how to make music and dance, but he’s tired of living a lie. Being part of the recording group Low Down is fine, but he can’t be himself. The fans want a fantasy, not a gay man. Besides that, he can’t make the music in his soul. Where’s a man to look when he needs a fresh start?

Rian’s the prince of the mers, and he’s tired of being used. He wants someone to love him for his song. When he hears the sweet, low voice coming from the cruise ship, he knows he’s found his match. But will the human sacrifice everything to live in Paradise, deep in the heart of Lake Erie?

All rights reserved.
Copyright ©2020 Megan Slayer

He stared out at the darkness of Lake Erie. Jesus. He was on a cruise around Lake Fucking Erie. He’d grown up in Cleveland and wasn’t fazed by the lake. He also didn’t see the attraction. The band could’ve chosen to cruise the Keys or the Bahamas and they’d picked… Lake Erie. Then again, the band wasn’t the powerhouse they’d been a year ago.
The music business had shifted. Vocal groups who danced weren’t popular. Chanteuses were. Singer-songwriters who sat alone on stage with a guitar were in vogue. He couldn’t blame the band for wanting to chase the spotlight and keep the fans.

The best way to keep the fans was to go to them… and cruise Lake Erie.

He drank in the darkness of the water and sighed. The lines of his longest solo came to mind. He sang the song. Who cared if he wasn’t on stage? He wasn’t sick any longer, but heartsick.

“I’m looking for my special one. The one who makes me come undone,” he sang. “Who sees me to my core, who can’t love me even more.”

He’d written those words for his high-school crush. Taye never knew he’d been the object of Camryn’s affection. How could he? Camryn hadn’t come out, and Taye wasn’t homosexual.
He sang the lines again. The music wasn’t gone, and he still loved to sing. He might not be the loudest, but he had a rich sound. Honeyed, he’d been told.

Another sound caught his attention. Someone was singing with him. He paused. Were the guys coming upstairs? Were they in another suite? Coming onto the deck?

The song came to him again. Low, honeyed like him, but sadder.

He sang the lines of the song a third time. The voice mixed with his, making beautiful harmony. Natural harmony. He stopped singing. Where was the vocalist?

He moved to the edge of his balcony and searched the visible parts of the decks for the singer. No people came into view.

“Where are you?” Camryn asked. “Who are you?” He would love to meet this vocalist. “Hello?”

Paranormal? Contemporary? Which do YOU Choose? With @meganslayer #pnr #contemp #gay

It's not often I get to post in February. Once every four years, to be exact. Grin. Gotta love leap years!!

I love a good paranormal romance, but sometimes I need a good old contemporary. I'm itching to write another shifter, don't get me wrong. Really itching. But I've been on a contemporary jag. Does that happen to you? Ever get that itch? You just have to read or write paranormal and other times you have to read or write contemporary?

Just me?

Oh well.

This is one of the contemporary stories I just finished. I know you're going to love it. I do. :-)

Luke’s eyes widened. “Hi.”
Carson focused. Damn. Life had been good to his ex-boyfriend. Still so tall and thin, but handsome. He’d cut his black hair shorter than when they were in college and lines had been etched at the corners of his brown eyes, but he still exuded sexiness. The stubble on his strong jaw added to his attractiveness. What would it feel like to kiss him now? To have him smile and hold his hand again? Would the sparks be as intense? More?
He had to find out.
Carson had Luke there and close. He knew what he wanted, and he wouldn’t stop until he got his man. He wouldn’t lose or walk away this time.
****
Luke wished he hadn’t shown up at the reunion and hadn’t brought Duncan. He hadn’t wanted to arrive alone. He’d gone to the prom alone and more than one homecoming dance on his own. Then he’d started seeing Carson, and he hadn’t been a solo act. With Duncan, he wasn’t alone, but he wasn’t happy. He’d have to introduce Carson to Duncan. Damn it.
Carson extended his hand to Luke. “It’s been a long time.” Warmth shone in his eyes and he smiled. He held the handshake for a pregnant moment.
“It has,” Luke managed. Carson had that effect on him—tongue-tied. He wanted to say more, but the words weren’t there. He swept his gaze over Carson. His hair was a little thinner, but still perfect in its style. He’d grown thinner, but the slender look worked for him. His blue eyes sparkled. He smelled good, too.

Resolutions and Sparkling New Years! with @meganslayer #gay #romance #resolutions #happynewyear

Time to ring in the new year and it's also time to make resolutions. I'm horrible at keeping them. I tend to forget I want to do them, then it's too late. Last year, I made a resolution to blog every day. So far, I'm still on the stick. But, I've had a few days where I've been almost late. Eek!

I also made a resolution to walk at least 700 miles for the year. I've made it to almost 850. I haven't been able to walk the three miles I wanted to every day, but it's okay. 850 isn't shabby.

What about you? What's your resolution? This year, it's to run. I've never been much of a runner and I don't like to sweat, but I want to say I ran a 5k. So...run it is. Tell me what you're planning for 2020.

In the meantime, here's a little bit about my New Year's story, Sparkling New Year!
