Last chance to sink your teeth into a S*A*L*E! RISE BY MOONLIGHT ONLY $.99! by Nancy Gideon

“You’ve only got Two Days!”

I always loved that ominous commercial warning of time rapidly ticking down, urging you into hyper-speed if you wanted to take advantage of the savings. Here’s your warning if you haven’t picked up a copy of RISE BY MOONLIGHT, the final book in my “By Moonlight” dark paranormal series!

Here’s a taste to whet your . . . hunger for more . . .

He felt her before gates opened onto the long drive leading to their gracefully crumbling plantation house. Her essence teased up his nose, stirring his awareness like a smooth stone dropping into a still, deep pond. Ripples of warmth and desire spread outward in eager little shivers. She was home, and everything calmed in his complicated world.

Max waited, still as the heavy antique furnishings, a tall indistinguishable shape teased out by flames from the low parlor fire as the front door opened. With a brisk staccato on marble tiles, her silhouette hurried by, then the tap of heels paused, backtracking until Charlotte Caissie framed the doorway the way she did his life, with her strength, proud stature and shrewd intuition. A smile flashed with her welcoming, “Hi.”

His reply rumbled, a rough caress. “Welcome home, sha. How was your day?” Simple domestic comments steeped in an intimacy that relaxed the taut line of her shoulders.

“Same ole, same ole.” She entered the room with her long, confident stride, crossing to him as an end rather than a means to the rest of that day. Her fingertips brushed over the bristle of evening stumble on his cheek on their way to cup the back of his dark head, drawing him down for a slow, reassuring exchange as vital to both their lives as oxygen.

Separately, the unlikely couple walked a parallel line of complications both tried not to cross. He was a criminal turned business powerhouse ruling a clan of shapeshifters threatened with extermination, she a fiercely determined detective sworn to protect a very different kind of citizen from a deadly truth about to overtake them. Though their paths were different, they led to the same end . . . to this house, this moment, and ultimately, to the survival of those they loved.

Max feared for her, not because she was weaker, but because she was his. Just, as she would ferociously claim he was hers. Two parts of the same whole now that they were a bonded pair. But those two parts would soon become a trio. They’d never had any kind of normal family life growing up. But their child, he vowed every time he glanced at that ever-increasing midsection, would be different, fiercely loved, protected, spared the isolation and fear that had shaped both parents. Max would do anything to see that dream to fruition.

Anything.

RISE BY MOONLIGHT was my favorite . . . and the most heartbreaking book of my “By Moonlight” shapeshifter books because it’s the last of 15. Debuting in 2010 with MASKED BY MOONLIGHT, these continuing characters have been part of my writing life for the last 15 years and as the song goes, it’s so hard to say good-bye.

The good news is that that I’ve just gotten the rights back to Books 4-8 in the series (S&S wouldn’t return the first three - Masked, Chased and Captured - because of a poorly worded contract loophole that slipped past my then agent. Sigh.) I’m going to work on reissuing those five titles as soon as my thoughts return to business after three weeks in Ireland (Yes, my next post will be c/o the Emerald Isle!!).

Until then, Slainte!

Count Down to Halloween . . . by Nancy Gideon

This has been a bummer of a year for my favorite holiday. By now, I’d normally have the house orange and black and Halloween all over. But . . . not this year. This year, I just haven’t been feeling the spirit. Isolation, not being able to see family and friends, sitting in the basement watching all fourteen seasons of SUPERNATURAL back to back in anticipation of its return (okay, that high point finished just before sitting down to write this post), me and my son working our way through our movies of the month, and the probability of no Trick ‘r Treaters . . . Boo humbug.

Come right down to it, I don’t have it bad. No one I know personally has contracted COVID. I’ve been Zooming with critique partners, writers’ groups and even a potential agent. I’ve been enjoying the last of summer sun on the patio with my cats (leashed for safety - the cats, not me) and I’ve tiptoed out into the real world, masked, and distanced, for groceries but it’s not the same. My gym finally opened but I’m afraid to go. An anticipated in-person book signing with all possible precautions in place was just cancelled at the last minute due to a huge rise in cases. Sigh . . .

I, like everyone else I know, am doing everything I can to stay safe and protect those around me. I’ve been celebrating my latest release, RISE BY MOONLIGHT on line with a month-long blog tour event that’s taken me and my book to some Spooktacular places, including a Facebook event where I “met” enthusiastic new readers. My treats were all virtual including this fun jigsaw puzzle (my renewed quarantine guilty pleasure).

Haunted Halloween Spooktacular 2020
All the Halloweenie joy of that event has got me dragging out (some) orange and black crates from the basement for better late than never decorating that may include this guy.

And while I’m decking out those gruesome halls, I’ll be listening to this appropriately dark and stormy playlist.

I guess I’m being dragged, moaning and groaning into the holiday spirit. So, how’s it haunting at your house? Pumpkin Spice, any one?

#PNR New Release Fatigue by Nancy Gideon #NewRelease

Oh, for those days when you just had to write the book and wait for royalties . . . You sat in your office (or at the kitchen table) typing on a Smith Corolla onto layered correction paper from that handwritten draft then tucked those 500 pages into a manuscript box and drove to the post office. Your revisions came on copies of your pages with corrections/suggestions written in by hand (if you got any!). You retyped them, sent them back and waited . . . sometimes up to 1-2 years to see the finished product come out on the shelves. There was no Internet. There were no writers’ groups. There were a couple of book publications your publisher would submit to for reviews. You’d get fan mail to your PO Box and if you were lucky, for that first book, a mention in the local paper. Bookstores or libraries might invite you to sign copies for readers. That was it. All you had to do was write the next book!

I fell into the PR trap early on with the bookmark craze in the ‘80s. My ex was a printer and took the double-sided playing card bookmark I designed for my 1988 Dana Ransom historical, LOVE’s GLORIOUS GAMBLE, to work for a rounded corner trim and coated finish. Winning Romantic Times Magazine’s Industry Award for Unique Promotion began my three-decade love/hate affair with PR. Tasseled and charmed bookmarks, tri-fold flyers, and conference giveaways (plastic vampire teeth attached to a designed business card was a BIG hit for my “Touched by Moonlight” series!) led to the Social Media explosion online. It wasn’t enough to pay for a quality website. You had to have an active blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc. presence. Then fan pages, blog tours, newsletter exchanges . . . thank goodness I love my Canva graphics program and can do most the graphics (even animated!) legwork myself. I even took a class on Amazon algorithms! But money going out surpassed income flowing in. Time spent lining up day after day of events ate up hours and energy that could have been spent working on that next book. Where does it end? Do the ends justify the means? Is there a payoff or just a black hole suck on the bank and time account?

My stock answer is do what you enjoy and can afford. I only wish I’d listen to my own advice. We all know about burn out in writing, but promotion fatigue has become a real concern. I have a Virtual Assistant who updates my website and blog, manages my newsletter, and does the setup for my self-pubbed books. That’s a monthly cost that replaces the need for therapy. With every book launch, I try to have a detailed outline of past and hopeful future efforts and chart costs and results. I’ve started keeping track of everything I put up online and to what audience to keep from over-saturating. But my biggest failing is failing to get everything in place months prior to release. It always comes down to that last-minute scramble for visibility that may or may not result in sales.

My pointers: The time to start planning book PR is when you start the writing project. Have a PR folder set up with files for graphics, contacts, advertising avenues, book excerpts, quotes, reviews, and links to potential events (and update frequently). Do what you can yourself but have a list of go-tos for things you can’t. Pre-planning eliminates last minute paralysis. Build your newsletter by doing exchanges. Cultivate an active writer/friend network who will share and host your work (and you do the same for theirs!). Save ideas for ads/graphics that catch your eye that you can adapt to your own project. Don’t let the stress of promotion overshadow the joy of your new release! Take time to sit back and relish the fruits of your labor of love!

And, by the way, I have a new release out! This is another way to promote them!

What has or hasn’t worked for you when it comes to book promotion? Any particular avenues that have you coming back to them release after release?

Happy Writing!!

RISE BY MOONLIGHT – Now Available by Nancy Gideon

It’s so hard to say good-bye to the friends, family and a city who’ve shared your 4:30 mornings at the keyboard and late nights sleeplessly plotting for over a decade. But all good things must end and RISE BY MOONLIGHT completes that 15-book love affair with it’s release on August 3rd. What started out as a paranormal submission for a category romance line quickly grew out of control with characters larger than life and a dark plotline bursting at the seams needing four full length novels to even begin to contain the courtship of the two main characters. And then there were all those multifaceted secondary characters demanding equal time. What’s an author to do but write their stories? Could I go on indefinitely? Yes! Should I? Not right now. I’m itching to do something new, something different, but first, my New Orleans clan needs one heck of a sendoff, Mardi Gras Style (beads optional)!

Hope you’ll join in the celebration by shouting out loud and sharing.

“Every delicious word on the page exhilarates with a sensuous ferocity. Hopelessly addicted.” – NYT bestselling author, Darynda Jones
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Watch for Blog Tour details if you’d like to be part of the festivities or just ask if you’d like me as a guest. I’m very tidy.

What’s next? Not sure yet. A return to my historical westerns as Dana Ransom? A Regency romp as Lauren Giddings? Contemporary romantic Suspense? What do you think? Maybe a next gen “By Moonlight?”

For now, Laissez les bon temps rouler!

WRITTEN BY THE STARS by Nancy Gideon

When we look into our writer’s tool box, we hoard all sorts of plans, prompts, gadgets and lists to make us more productive, our stories more organized, and our characters tow the line. But have you looked beyond these everyday helps for a more . . . ethereal answer?

I’ve posted about Tarot before, both as a component of one of my books and as a tool to creativity i.e. Arwen Lynch’s MAPPING THE HERO’S JOURNEY WITH TAROT: 33 Days to Finish You Book (highly recommended!). Lately, I’ve been using it more for intuitive development as well as my own existential vacay from the grimness of the daily news, especially after a November trip to New Orleans where I had palm, tea, numerology and card readings at Bottom of the Cup and Earth Odyssey (my go-to places to visit there!) that were eerily spot on. Suggestion: If you ever have this done (and if you visit NOLA make sure you do!), take a picture of your card spread or ask if you can record the reading on your phone so you can remember/look up the significance later. Most readers will allow it.

I’m just a dabbler, but I am a believer in things beyond coincidence. For example, while adding a scene during final edits to my soon to be released RISE BY MOONLIGHT, my quirky card reading character Ophelia casts a three card spread on her current situation that is eerily prophetic (considering I know what’s going to happen but had no control over the chosen cards!). Using my very cool Game of Thrones deck, her Past is The Sun: protection, sanctuary, positive relationship growth, family, and children. Her Present is the Eight of Swords: restriction, obligation, conformity, relationship road block. Her Future is the Seven of Swords: vigilance, mistrust, protect home and guard what’s yours. Considering the scenes are already written by yours truly, Phe’s cards are right on the money for meeting the man of her dreams who comes with a pack of young brothers and sisters whom she helps rescue using her family fortune (Past), that her father’s treachery has them in hiding, forcing her to choose between relationships old and new (Present), and finally, circumstances bring an invader into their home, threatening their safety and bringing them under the protection of those they can trust (Future). Thank you, cosmos for supporting my plotline!

Since my first forbidden purchase of the book Tarot Revealed when I was a young teen, I’ve collected dozens of favorite decks, each one unique in their art and take on the various cards. I’ve kept these because of the ‘feel’ they give me. I still rely of their printed guides for interpretation but am learning how to become more intuitive. I keep a journal of Spreads listing deck, question, spread and interpretation, and the percentage of accuracy is amazingly high. It’s not fortune telling but rather a guide for deeper understanding of self and situation. I love scrolling through my Pinterest pin suggestions and printing up interesting or helpful spreads to focus future casts and invite you to take a peek at my page. Each deck is different. Though connected to the same universal symbolism, they vary widely in their art and interpretations, some very dark, some light and fun, so research what you’re looking for. Make sure all 78 cards have unique graphics and not just the major arcana (face cards). That’s why I suggest Pinterest so you can see inside the deck and get a review. I won’t buy a sealed deck unless I’ve seen a sample after getting burned by several with meaningless interpretations or just plain ugly art. Tarot is the whole experience: visual, symbolic and spiritual. Half the fun is finding a set that “speaks” to you. Here’s a post that features some of what’s out there: https://www.alittlesparkofjoy.com/tarot-decks/. My personal favorite decks are The Gilded Tarot (gorgeous and traditional), Games of Thrones (dark tie-in with show) and Steampunk (female-oriented and positive). The most disappointing was the very expensive Vampire deck. BTW, Oracle cards are NOT Tarot cards. The above post explains the difference.

Whether seeking a deeper focus on self or character, add Tarot to your paranormal tool box to assist you in exploring and deepening your development of plot or use it as a part of your plot, itself.

LIFE AFTER 9-TO-5 by Nancy Gideon

The last time I didn’t have full-time employment outside the house was over thirty years ago. Back then, after quitting office work to start a family, I filled those hours when I wasn’t at the keyboard (or in the beginning, at the notebook and manual typewriter!) raising two sons, getting involved in their school activities and being an assistant Scout leader at every level from grade school to high school. I sold my first book when my oldest was two and continued under contract for several NY houses consistently after that. My writing was my job and I took it seriously, sometimes bringing in the bigger paycheck in our household. I went to conferences, spoke at conventions, did major promoting, belonged to professional associations because I was a writing professional and I worked hard at it.

Then when my sons were in high school, the bottom fell out of the romance market and my steady mid-list income went with it. It was time to go back to “real” work. I found my new niche as a legal assistant (who was also a writer). I had great employers who were supportive of the writing career that bolstered my income after I got divorced. Everything was good. Then 2019 reared its ugly head, becoming a year of chaos, upheaval and personal challenge.

After my fab boss retired and closed his small office in 2018, I got a job at a big firm with great benefits and wonderful people. I thought I had my forever 65-and-beyond plan in place. But due to unpleasant circumstances set in motion long before I started there, I decided to jump to another less stressful job at a smaller family firm – a job that looked like a perfect fit on the surface, but reality didn’t match the description I’d been given. I was over my head from day one. I left there feeling ancient, exhausted and without hope of ever being productive again. I couldn’t face the want ads. I didn’t believe I had anything left to offer. I couldn’t look at my computer screen. I wanted to give up on everything. I saw early retirement as my only solution and grabbed at that well-deserved gold ring and the dream of having all the time in the world to write. Right? Well, not exactly . . .

All the time in the world tends to steal away that sense of immediacy. My writing draaaaaagged on. I filled my time doing blogs and scrolling social media. I binge-watched Netflix and Amazon Prime (hey, 8 seasons of Dexter in one week alone!), sleeping in, playing Mahjong instead of editing the final book in my shapeshifter series. Never knowing what day of the week it was, I started adding back pounds I’d struggled to lose. Staying in my sweat suit and slippers all day became my new normal during the waning months of 2019.

No. Just NO! A trip to New Orleans in late November was a catalyst (along with two very insightful tarot readings!). Time away with great friends and great food (and my computer) in my favorite city brought new life back into this old gal. My problems weren’t anxiety over things I can’t control but rather the loss of the routine that kept me from feeling productive. Add to that, I was ending a 15-book series. After twelve years, it felt like all my best friends were moving away! Though I have plenty of other writing options, I had no plan on what to do next. Not a good place for someone with ADD/OCD. Sooo, I got out a diary planner that emphasizes overall monthly focus and goals with work and personal to do lists and daily calendars along with a month wrap up. I LOVE lists! After some breathing mediation every morning, I flip it open and jot down expectations for the day and list accomplishments. Now, I’m working to get ALL the month’s PR stuff done the first weekend of the month, so I don’t get bogged down in it at the end of each week. I’ll be pre-planning FB posts with a goal not to browse unless I’m posting and to browse only until that first cup of coffee kicks in. I’m meeting with writer friends! I’m going to the gym. I’m meal planning every Saturday for the following week, so I have no frustrating last-minute blanks that call for fast food fill-ins. I’m kinda loving that retirement time now.

And I’m finishing those dang edits so RISE BY MOONLIGHT can be off to Beta readers mid-February and the final to my line editor in March. Then I’ll finally have a release date before those three weeks in Ireland over my birthday in May where I’ll get into that next writing project whatever it might be.

Happy 2020. It’s better when you have a plan! What are yours?

NATURE Vs NURTURE by Nancy Gideon

While writing my post for IWSG this month about which I preferred writing, the hero or the villain, I opened my own personal can of worms about the characters I love to create. I’m a dark hero kind of gal. No surprise. But all dark makes for a pretty grim pallet. It’s those shades of gray and glimpses of silver linings that make tough guys into heroes.

When I started writing my “House of Terriot” series, featuring heroes who were deadly, damaged and delicious, my four princely brothers where all over the black/white spectrum. Hardened by their horrific upbringing under the brutal rule of their tyrannical/mad father, spoiled by privilege, rank and wealth, having to fight each other for his attention, their place, and often their lives, they could have easily taken the villainous route some of their siblings chose. While clan and honor drove each of the four, those shaded mid-tones shaped each of them very differently.

Nature vs Nurture played an important role as each had a different mother, giving them individual goals, flaws, and needs. The females they chose for their mates molded them into the heroes they’d each become. They’d been character sketched in PRINCE OF SHADOWS and UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS, books in the “By Moonlight” series, following their brother/king Cale Terriot from Lake Tahoe to New Orleans: Turow, the silent, relentless tracker; Colin, the hunky, cynical politician; Rico, frivolous and impulsive; and Kip, the baby of the family, who valued brain over brawn. Taking those broad strokes, what fun I had creating the circumstances, and the heroines, who would shape them into swoon-worthy males – in ways most of them would never have seen coming!

In PRINCE OF HONOR, I gave the painfully shy and fiercely loyal Turow a traitorous bad girl he’d secretly loved since childhood to defend against both her own nature and his family and king, forcing him for the first time to take a stand for himself instead of following the direction of others. Sylvia’s sharp, self-preserving edges and unapologetic passions softened his solid planes, the weaknesses she concealed bringing out his protective instincts.
Colin, the playboy in PRINCE OF POWER, hid his guilt and grief over the deaths of his step-father and brothers and estrangement from the mother who blamed and disowned him behind his wry sarcasm until meeting his match in the love-em-and use-em Mia Guedry, heir to a rival clan, his equal in sexual politics and the drive to compensate for their painful isolation.

In ‘love’ with his brother’s mate, devil-may-care Rico, the PRINCE OF FOOLS, finds himself on the doorstep of a secretive woman with a preteen daughter who tempts him with the vision of love and family he’s never had, their violent past forcing him to step up into the role of hero with a cause. For Amber James, it was love at first smile, but she fears the flighty Terriot prince can’t be counted on to stick around once he discovers her tragic past.

Of all his brothers, only Christopher “Kip” Terriot has the perfect family life (or so he thinks), keeping him grounded and focused on what’s important, until this PRINCE OF DREAMS falls for the female he’s asked to betray. Psychic Ophelia Brady sees a match written in the stars with her handsome prince, but knows he’s just using her to get to her corrupt father. Family both draws them together and pushes them apart when forced to choose which fate to follow.

Struggling with the weight of dark deeds done at the direction of their father, when the four princes take a bold step to stand behind brother Cale when he deposes the terrorizing despot, their search to find a new purpose and a place for themselves uniting their clans and finding their happily-ever-afters isn’t easy, but heroes forged by fire, in my mind, are always the best kind.

The Terriots will return in RISE BY MOONLIGHT, my current WIP, the final book of the 15-book series. You have time to catch up before it’s released later this year!

I like my heroes flavored the way I like my coffee – rich, deep, complex and strong. How about you?
