Death Cannot Stop True Love by Marilyn Barr

In my work as a spiritual healer, I often have clients who request relationship tarot card readings. They all want to know if the significant other in their life is a soulmate, twin flame, or just someone placed in their path. My first question to them is always what their definitions are for these terms. Between movie magic and social media clickbait, our spiritual definitions have been lost. The client’s conversation with me rarely resembles the survey they took online which compared preferences and childhood experience for “twin flame commonality.”

In fact, in most religious texts, your soulmate is defined as a complement to the lessons you must learn to reach Enlightenment (e.g. Heaven, Nirvana, etc.). Therefore the more alike two people are, the less likely they are to be soulmates. That’s not to say two hockey fans or horror movie buffs aren’t soulmates or twin flames. Common interests do help us cross paths on an increasingly crowded planet.

Most religions, metaphysical texts, and thanatology data (research into death) agree there is planning before each soul is born onto this planet and each life has a predetermined purpose with a small percentage of free will to “spice it up.” The documents also agree that your soulmate is one person who was decided to go through this life with you to challenge your current spiritual state in name of bettering your soul (called enlightenment). My clients want to know if their current fling is “The One” and always leave my office disappointed…because in most Shamanic practices, we believe we have a team of twin flame(s) on the physical and spiritual plane, a soulmate who drives us crazy, and network of living souls scheduled to cross our life paths at different times for different reasons. Even if I can correctly categorize their significant other as one of these relationships, it doesn’t guarantee the predestined love that burns across time and space.

According to the interviews of those who have survived a clinical death (the research behind Mario Martinez’s The Mind Body Code), there is a global consciousness which has been historically been referred to as “the white light.” Within this energetic space, the clinically dead people experienced a reunion with the other soul pieces within their spirit teams. These are what we call “twin flames” or pieces from the same collective “soul” which have separated for a time in the physical to spread love and happiness. These are the people (or pets) with whom we instantly connect and have a sense of belonging when in their presence. In Shamanism, we believe half your twin flames exist with you on Earth while another set watches over you from the spiritual place as spirit guides or a spirit team (interchangeable terms). Who was once part of your team may walk the earth with you now or you may decide you have had enough of earth and join one of your twin flame’s teams. If you’ve read Dance to a Wylder Beat or my teasers for Dreamcatcher or Sound a Wylder Silence, you know I love writing about spirit guides because of the close relationship I have with my team.

Where does this leave true love? I had a client ask me if my husband was jealous of my spirit team relationships and I had to laugh. My reply was that he knows we are soulmates and not twin flames. It is not because we share a love of books, punk music, and olives on pizza, but because our views on many topics are opposing. Our discussions are more likely to educate one another than act as an echo chamber. My strict Christian upbringing clashes with his feminist, equality-promoting, pagan views from his parents. On the flip side, I grew up in a community where we often didn’t have two nickels to rub together, but we always had an extra chair at the dinner table for a neighbor.

Could we have been reincarnated to irritate one another in the name of spreading love on Earth over many lifetimes? This is where the research, religious texts, and spiritual experiences of gurus diverge. While most Christian religions preach one life and then straight to heaven, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism (just to name a few) all believe in reincarnation. The presence of spirit guides would be evidence of reincarnation but tangible evidence of spirit guide involvement isn’t more than antidotal at this time. Whether it is true or not, I love reading the latest research on the topic. When I was asked to join a group of award-winning authors to write in the Reincarnation Book Series, I couldn’t say no. Will AI Take Over Fiction Writing? by Keri Kruspe

 

In her May 7^th podcast in 2021, leading author Joanna Penn stated “Artificial Intelligence is already part of our lives in the tools and services we use every day. As AI development accelerates, how can authors … use it as leverage to expand income and opportunities?”

I love how optimistic she about the future of being a writer. She stresses how AI would help rather than hinder writing in the future.

However, there are other thoughts out there that contradict what she proposes. In her article of Oct of that same year, AuthorNicole Hillbig outlines a scarier prospect. She states, “Writer is not a protected profession.” She goes on by saying the AI algorithm can fall back on a massive amount of text data to learn to “write”. They glean this information from the vast amount of text published online. With self-publishing being so immense, the AI has learned general writings skills in higher detail.

Does This Mean, as Self-Published Authors, we've shot ourselves in the foot?

Don’t hyperventilate just yet. AI writing isn’t something new. There are lot of free programs available that you can use AI can use to help you write. Writesonic, AI Writer are just a couple examples. And they’ve been around for a while now.

You may ask yourself, now does the actual AI writing compare to a human writer? Never fear, the AI does have some limitations. In her article, Ms. Hillbig outlines them: 

AI cannot capture ambiguous image or text content from data records.

These rise mostly because of cognitive connection to values that rise from literary, religious, mathematical, sporting, and facial linguistic contests. The AI can only select a single relevant piece of info from these data sets. It has a hard time evaluating these separate contents and can’t think associatively as humans do.

We check and adjust the emotional and as well as social values of any given thought. It seems metaphors and imagery are causing problems for AI. It simply doesn’t understand them.

An AI cannot create stories that involve personal experiences filled with emotions and cognitive perceptions. 

I don’t have to tell you that is the core of writing. Putting your feelings and impressions on paper for others to experience is the main reason we writers exist in the first place. Bringing other people along for the ride is the cherry on our story-telling sundae. While an AI can transfer pure information, the emotional element can only be communicated by people. Only we can relay a sense for it in order to share it with the world.

Can Humans and AI Just Get Along? 

As Ms. Hillbig continues, she reiterates how the AI has an enormous learning advantage and can already create reading data with little difficulty. But, she emphases, we shouldn't be afraid AI will replace us. While we can use the advantages AI brings (i.e. helping with writer's block and learn how to grow beyond our own capabilities), they do have limits. The AI has a moral and ethical problem that always has to be corrected by humans. 

To help back this up, the Bureau of Labor Statics in 2020 states the "employment of writers and authors is projected to grow 9 percent from 2020 to 2030. About as fast as the average for all occupations."

Will People Still Read in the Future? 

An Egyptian writer in 2,400 BC claimed, 

"Writing – for those who understand it, it is more useful than any office/it is more pleasant than bread and beer, than clothes and ointments/it is more luck than an inheritance in Egypt and than a grave in the west.” 

Funny how something 5,000 years ago has endured.
Story-telling has been with mankind since the beginning. While the delivery may change in the coming decades, I feel the need for stories will increase. As mankind continues in their isolated existence (think I’m wrong? Next time you’re in a restaurant, see how many people are on their phones instead of talking to the person they’re with), the need for emotional stimulation will be needed. The other day I heard someone claim the technical advancements in the next 50 years will make the last 50 years look like we’ve been sitting around the campfire in our cave, banging on rocks with bones for entertainment.

In the future as well as today, people need stories in whatever they watch and listen to. Even if the only stories they get are short bursts of digital multimedia that blends an economy of words with audio and video. And behind the images there has to be some type of story to capture the masses attention.

To quote NeilGaiman back in 2013: “Fiction has two uses. Firstly, it’s a gateway drug to reading. The drive to know what happens next, to want to turn the page, the need to keep going, even if it’s hard, because someone’s in trouble and you have to know how it’s all going to end … that’s a very real drive.

And the second thing fiction does is to build empathy. Prose fiction is something you build up and you alone, using your imagination, create a world and people it and look out through other eyes. You get to feel things, visit places and worlds you would never otherwise know. You learn that everyone else out there is a me, as well. You’re being someone else, and when you return to your own world, you’re going to be slightly changed.”

He goes on to say: “If you were trapped in an impossible situation, in an unpleasant place, with people who meant you ill, and someone offered you a temporary escape, why wouldn’t you take it?” I love how he follows up with a quote from JRR Tolkien “the only people who inveigh against escape are jailers.”

What's Old is New Again 

When researching this article, I came across a lot of folks claiming actual books will become obsolete. They even predict that digital novels will disappear as new technological advancements happen. Even if they do, the need for storytelling will not. Sure, we’ll see new art forms emerge, but they will become slightly more niche as time goes on.

But I put this to you… the more things change, the more they remain the same. Right now I’m listening to new renditions of old vinyl records instead of listening to the songs I’ve downloaded. Why? Well, I am a bit nostalgic, but I also think the quality is better. To be honest, I like the sense of privacy. No one keeps track of how many times I listen to a particular song verse another. 

I feel the same way about the physical books I purchase. There’s nothing better than opening a novel for the first time. Hearing the binder crackle as I indulge in the luscious scents that come from the pages…

It's hard to say goodbye ~ Writing THE END by Jessica E. Subject

 

Writing THE END

I'm writing a story called RET right now, but lately, it's been hard to sit my butt down and write. Why? There are many reasons, but the biggest one is that I'm getting close to the end of the book. And that means I'm going to have to say goodbye soon. 

I always have this issue when I write any book, but with RET, it seems even harder. This isn't just the end of a book, but the end of the series. I'll be saying goodbye to the Kaddim Brothers and their family, and to the space racer team, ORIXA, pushing them out of my thoughts for good. I've had these characters in my head for over two years now. Yes, VAWN released in August of 2021, but the whole family occupied a space in my mind well before then, when I was still writing my Shifter Towers series. I'm truly finding it tough and very sad.

At the same time, I'm plotting out the first book in my new series. I'm not going to say much about it, except I have ideas for five books in this series already. They're all something new, but at the same time, they're very familiar for me. I'm so excited.

So, while I try to reign in my excitement for this new series, and deal with my sadness to finish writing RET, here's a teaser from the story for you that I shared last Friday for #FridayKiss.

10 Movies on the Must Watch, and then Watch Again, and Again, List

I rarely re-read a book. Not that I didn’t enjoy the story and hope to revisit the characters again, but more that I have so many other books that I want to read. Lucky for me, many books come in a series. That way, I spend more time with the characters in a new story.

I also love movies. But I have more luck finding good books than finding a good film. There are some movies that I have enjoyed so much that I can’t help but watch them if I come across them while channel surfing—and I’m not the only one who loves a good movie. 

I asked around, and have listed others  in addition to mine that are hard to pass up no matter how busy or tired we might be. I also asked what makes these movies irresistible. Here are 10—in no particular order of preference.

1. Overboard

This wasn’t one I initially thought of, but it is one I love to rewatch. When asked, it is the riches to rags and then back to riches that draws this viewer into the story repeatedly. 

2. Hope Floats

This one was listed as a favorite, and Where the Heart Is, as a ‘sappy, emotional drama.’ 

3. Urban Cowboy

The story, and music, draw this movie watcher back to the screen when this comes on.

4. Godfather, Scarface, Goodfellas

These crime dramas are always a favorite of my hubby, but I enjoy them. Goodfellas is especially one of my favorites. And I’m not the only one. We had friends over one evening. She put this on and was mesmerized until the end, even though she’d watched this many times and despite half the group falling asleep long before the end.

5. Pride and Prejudice 

The complexity of the characters draws this viewer in to watch multiple versions of this movie, show and re-read the books time and again. 

6. Bridesmaids

This movie was chosen by several viewers (including me). It was touted as a good comedy and friendship story. Me? It makes me laugh every single time. There’s nothing like a good comedy!

7. The Holiday

This is one of my additions. This fun romance involves switching places for totally different lives and finding love at Christmas. Romance movies aren’t usually my go-to, but I can’t get enough of The Holiday.

8. Shawshank Redemption

This was a favorite of several viewers, including me. This story of friendships,and overcoming adversity gets me every time. It is—of course—a Stephen King story. (If I included all the Stephen King movies I love to watch and rewatch, that might fill the entire list. I’m sure you’d like a little variety.)

9. Bram Stoker’s Dracula

This is one of my favorite—wait for it—love stories! Yes, I’m warped that way because to me, it’s a love story. I watch this movie at least once a year. Keanu might’ve drawn me in to watch it the first time, but the true (somewhat creepy) love interest is Dracula. It shows how true love surpasses time.( And must be blind if you get a gander at Dracula.)

10. Practical Magic

This movie is one of my favorites, and one of the other participants also picked it. I love a sister story with magical powers. It’s why I keep rewatching the television series Charmed again and again. (Perhaps it’s because I have three sisters? Unfortunately, so far, we’ve not acquired magic powers. Still hey, there is always paranormal women’s fiction telling us that our magic just might show up later in life! Psst…scroll to the bottom if you’re interested in some paranormal and cozy reads!)

Maybe you’ve heard of some of these, and perhaps others might now be on your to-be-watched list next time you settle in for a good movie.

When I taught elementary school, today was a favorite day for the kids. How they delighted in playing pranks on everyone, especially the teachers. We had to stay on our toes not to get caught. Or we'd play one on them, like saying recess was cancelled. After the groans, we'd smile and say, "April Fools." 

The custom of playing pranks or jokes on others possibly goes back to the Middle Ages. Do you remember Chaucer's Canterbury Tales? Although there's some dispute, others think the story of Chaunticleer, the vain rooster, was tricked by the fox on April 1st. It's a little convoluted, but then what else is new about Chaucer? 

In 2020, April Fool's Day was cancelled because of covid. Considering what a bad year that was for everyone, especially those in hospitals, it was probably a good idea. I don't remember that, but then I've managed to forget most of that year.

Why do people get such a kick out of fooling others? Or making others look like fools?

Is it the need to appear superior? Or to do it to them before they do it to us?

Dylan.

He shouldn’t say anything. Should keep on walking.

“Hi there. Do you come here often?” Hell. Of all the things he could’ve said, Chase picked one of the worst pick-up lines…ever.

Dylan’s eyes narrowed. “Do I—we’ve met, haven’t we?”

“I’m sorry. I’m horrible at manners sometimes.” Chase offered his hand. “I’m Chase. We met at the Riley party.” He dropped his voice to a whisper. “I’m Mind Bender.”

“Oh!” Dylan’s eyes widened. “I hadn’t recognized you…but I bet that was the point.” His cheeks burned bright red and the color spread down his neck. “Can I say that was a good show, or will I get you into trouble?”

“Won’t get me into trouble. I appreciate the kind words.” Chase nodded to the cart. “I needed to get a few things. Care to walk with me, or are you nearly done?”

“I’m trying to get my shopping done while Nathan’s at swim camp.” Dylan gripped the cart. “The kid is a fish.”

“He’s your only child?” Chase pulled up beside Dylan and walked the rest of the way down the frozen food aisle.

“Just one. My partner and I couldn’t decide on another one.” Dylan’s blush deepened. “It’s a long story.”

“But I bet it’s a good one.” Chase missed being able to converse with other adults. The people at the store were okay, but they weren’t Dylan. The spark from the party hadn’t been in his imagination. He and Dylan seemed to be able to talk quite well.

“The story has its good parts, but there are bad parts, too.” Dylan stopped. “How much more do you have to buy?”

“Truth be told, I’m done.” Chase grinned. “I didn’t need much.”

“If you’re done, do you want to grab a cup of coffee? The little shop allows carts. I’ve only got a few more things to get.” Dylan flexed his fingers on the cart handle. The indentation of a wedding ring was evident, but not deep. Divorced? Split up? Chase wanted to know and yet, he didn’t want to ask.

“I’d like that,” Chase said. “I’ll pay for my things while you finish, then meet you at the coffee shop in, what, ten minutes?”

“Sounds good.”

Paying for his items didn’t take the entire ten minutes. For once, the lines at the store moved quickly. Chase tucked his change into his wallet. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d gotten through the line in less than fifteen minutes. He pushed the cart to the coffee shop. Most of the tables were empty and one of the booths was free. He pushed the cart behind the booth and plopped onto the wooden seat.

His skin prickled. Being around Dylan heightened his senses. What was it about the dad that kept him on the edge? He eased his phone from his pocket and switched the ringer to silent. If anyone needed him that bad, they could wait. As he sat there, the saltshaker began to levitate. Oh fuck. He grabbed the glass container and held it to the tabletop. No, no, no. His powers weren't allowed to go haywire. They weren't.

 

Spring Planting Time by Nancy Gideon

Spring is traditionally a time of new growth – time to rake off all the old, dried up and smothering remains of the past to allow for new sprouts to push through. Before the new can bloom, the old needs to be dealt with . . . kindly, carefully but firmly. Time to address, refresh and repot that To Do List.

Time to throw open your creative windows to let fresh inspiration in!

Breathe deep and let it out sloooooow. Then take a good, hard look at how your creative garden grows?

Is it choked with weeds of discontent and unkept schedules? Is it running wild without containment, yielding small unhealthy blooms instead of those rich and well-fertilized by planning, time, and care? Has it outgrown the space where it’s planted but you’re afraid to move it for fear of damaging its root system? Does it have enough light to nourish new buds and strong stems? WIPs, ideas and goals need structure and planning to yield the strongest, healthiest result. They need your attention and TLC.

Every year I run to the greenhouse and load up a flatbed with buds and blooms, eager to stick them in the soil and watch them grow. And each year, I’m disappointed by the result. Less than half of what’s planted survives and what does is straggly or anemic. So last year, I did my homework by organizing my containers (my garden is limited to the patio) and predetermining what to put in them according to size, spread and color. OCD much?

 
I spend a day grouping the plants by their pots then the next, get down and dirty. The result – all were planted according to the plan, none were wasted, and every inch of space was used. And when they bloomed, it was spectacular. Each morning, I sat on my glider to relax in my oasis, inhaling the fragrance, color and beauty while enjoying my coffee. I also planted herbs so I could take fresh snips for meals (note to self: parsley is an overachiever!). The other thing I did was take pictures of each arrangement and keep the plant identifiers so I can reproduce (or change) the grouping for this spring.

Before you start this year’s planting, revisit what you wanted to accomplish in 2021. Where do those dreams, actions, and desires stand? Do they still have relevance? Do they still represent your needs and where you want to be? Do they have room to grow in healthy soil or have they become root-bound and stunted?

Is the project growing or has it gone limp? Can you take cuttings to seed a series? Do you have the proper soil and water to grow an expanding readership? Have you grouped and tended those successful starts along with taking some new chances to plant for this year’s bounty? Inventorying your successes and failures gives you a strong foundation. Listing your components and prioritizing your efforts keeps you focused on what produces the best result.

Looking forward to Spring Anyone? by Tena Stetler

 

Well, officially the first day of Spring (vernal equinox) arrived on March 20, 2022. Surprisingly enough, I could actually see green spouts from my crocus, daffodils, snowdrops, tulips, and hyacinths. Usually these sprouts are poking out of the snow on the first day of Spring. Mother Nature allowed us a couple of spring like days before she’ll hit us with more wet snow. Not that I’m complaining, Colorado needs the moisture so badly, I’m fine with the snow. It just felt good to see starting of spring flowers along with the warm sun on my face!

How about a few fun facts about the Spring equinox?

1.      An equinox is a moment in time and space when the sun is positioned directly above the Earth’s equator, which happens just twice a year on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.

2.     In Mexico, in the ruins of the Mayan city Chichén Itzá, crowds gather at the ancient El Castillo pyramid every spring and fall equinox to witness an equinox celebration that dates around 1,000 A.D. The pyramid is dedicated to the feathered serpent god, Quetzalcoatl. Now this is the part that makes your skin crawl. At sunset on the equinoxes, the angle of the sun creates shadows that look like a giant snake. The light-and-shadow snake appears to slither down the pyramid steps until it merges with the huge sculpted serpent’s head at the bottom.

3.     Spring is a time of renewal and new growth. March showers (in Colorado it’s snow showers) bring April-May flowers and earthworms! The worms spend the winter buried deep below the frost line, but the annual spring showers reduce the oxygen in the dirt so they make their way to the surface. That’s why the first full moon in March is known as the Worm Moon?

4.     Then there is the age old magic egg spring equinox tradition. A day of magic. Folklore claims that special magnetic or energetic changes on the Spring equinox make is possible to stand a raw egg on its end. It’s a myth! When in reality, you can balance some raw eggs on their end anytime of the year. I’ve never been able to, but….

5.     Is there a gateway to hell during the Spring Equinox? Yep. According to Weird U.S.: Your Travel Guide to America’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets.  In the tiny town of Stull, Kansas at  a cemetery on Emanuel Hill, legend claims this is one of the places the devil himself can enter the human world only twice a year. Of course the other is Halloween. This is a new one on me.
